"Get over it Caroline." Annie pointed at the TV. "You've seen Dirty dancing fifty times, and you still don't think they get together at the end."
"I only get to see this when they air it once a year." Caroline pouted. She then watched the dancing at the end of the movie. "I love this. It reminds me of Richard."
"Yeah. It reminds me that he hates this movie." Annie said as she got up and stretched. "So much for sincere amore." She said in a mock Italian accent. "I got to go. I have an early matinee tomorrow."
"Well skip it." Caroline suggested after standing up herself. She danced a few steps to the door. "Let your understudy go on."
"It's not.."
"...that kind of matinee." Caroline finished. "I have to get to bed. Richard get here earlier every. I'm trying to remember if I'm paying him to be my colorist or my boyfriend."
Annie waved from the door. Caroline went upstairs to her loft bedroom. There was a half eaten box of chocolates on the bed. She picked up the note that had come with it.
Caroline, I'm so happy with you it's unbelievable. And then the typical Richard line. We're running out of yellow.
Caroline smiled and placed the note and box aside on the nightstand. Boy she was exhausted. She'll get her forty winks worth tonight. She turned on the radio and sank under the red silk sheets she got for her last birthday. She kept the sheets even though they were from Del. Del. I haven't seen him since they announced they relationship to the world. Actually he arrived unexpectantly and saw them entwined in the bed. He then passed out and nearly fell down the stairs. Caroline laughed to herself as she fell asleep.
It was dark. Caroline stumbled around in the seemingly large room. She stopped when she heard a whirring sound from all around. The lights flashed on. She had to cover her eyes. Once she had adjusted to the light change she looked around once more. There was a mirror directly across from where she stood. She was wearing a long dress. She marveled at how the dress hugged her body, yet hid her flaws at the same time. Caroline then gasped. This was the same dress Baby wore in Dirty Dancing. As she discovered that fact music began to play. It was the song from the movie. Even though the music was loud and booming she heard light footsteps coming in her direction. She turned in the direction and saw a figure emerging from the dark.
It was Richard. And true to the movie he was wearing the same outfit the Patrick Swayze wore when he was dancing with Baby in the final dancing scenes.
"Richard?" Caroline asked. This was her dream but still Richard hadn't exactly made an appearance. Richard shrugged and walked toward her.
"It's me. Don't ask me how, it's your brain."
"What do we do?"
"Well," He looked around. "We're the only ones here. Do you want to dance?"
"It wouldn't be unheard of, I suppose." Caroline said. "But you said you hated this movie."
"I do, but when in Rome..." He extended his hand. She took and drew her close. They could each others rhythms and knew what they would do before they even did it. He had his hands on her waist. They were a step behind the song, but since it was Carolines dream she could stop it and start it anywhere she pleased. Richard took her hand and spun her around on the tip of her toes. He then pulled her in and they stayed in that step for a few beats.
Then suddenly the music stopped. Richard looked around while Caroline shook her head. Richard let go of her as the lights and the room filled with light. Caroline looked at the door. There was a figure at the door. It was the same door that Richard came in. She recognized him as the figure came forward. It was Del.
"Del!" Caroline whispered. "What do you want?"
"I am here to fight for you." Del replied as he stopped several feet from the couple. "Quite literally, in fact."
"What are you doing in my dream Del?" Caroline shouted. Richard patted her on the back and she calmed down.
"I'm not really Del." Del said.
"Then who are you?" Richard asked.
"Actually, I'm trying to sound smarter than you. I am Del. I love you Caroline, and I will do anything to get you back."
"How will you do that?" Caroline asked. "What happens here isn't going to affect my feelings for the man I love." She grabbed Richards hand and held it tightly.
"I have a way." A voice rang out. Caroline and Del looked at the door. It was probably the only door in this nightmare. It was Annie. She walked toward the center of the room.
"What way?" Caroline asked her. Never mind what she was doing here in her dream.
"Have you seen American Warlords on TV?" She asked both of the guys. Del shook his head while Richard had a blank look on his face. "It's a game show where contests fight each other for money."
"Figures."
"It's on the new Spanish TV network I have. I only figured it out last night, but I thought it would be fun for you to fight over Caroline."
"I have already made my decision." Caroline protested.
"And apparently if something is not done Del will never give up on you. Then it will be like a bad soap opera."
Caroline thought for a moment. She looked at Richard then and Del and Annie. "Ok. I'll do it. If only to end this once and for all."
The room spun, but all managed to say on their feet. A gymnasium formed around them. Annie and Caroline stood back as large pillars took shape under Del and Richards feet. There was another difference. Both were now wearing form fitting outfits. Del was in red and Richard wore blue. They looked over the side and Annie and Caroline. Annie wore a referee outfit, complete with whistle and official looking clipboard.
"What's going on?" Caroline asked Annie.
"The object of this is to knock the other guy off of his pedestal. Personally I wanted to see Del knocked off his high horse for some time."
Caroline watched as two burly guys gave Del and Richard a stick that looked like a giant q-tip. Annie informed the guys of the rules and she blew her whistle.
Del started with a heavy barrage of blows. Richard took ever blow in stride. It was weird because he didn't look particularly athletic. Richard waited for the right moment and swiped Dels feet with the stick. He went down and Annie blew the whistle.
"And the winner is Richard!" Caroline heard her announce. Richard dismounted the pillar and took her in his arms and kissed her. Del had apparently disappeared. Richard then held her at arms length.
"Caroline? Are you there? Wake up?" He shook her. Caroline woke up with a start. She looked around. She was in her bedroom. What she had been hearing was her answering machine. She went down the stairs and picked up the line.
"Caroline, will you call me..."
"Richard, I'm here."
"Over sleep again?"
"Well..." She looked at the clock. It read nine-thirty
"It's all right. I'll be over in a few minutes." Richard said.
"See you then." Caroline said and hung up the phone. She sighed and went over to stroke salty. "I'm glad Del isn't fighting over me with Richard. Things are wacky as it is." Caroline patted salty and got ready for the day ahead.
