If She Would Have Been....

Home

Peter was still in a daze as he parked the car in the parking spot next to the pad. He slowly got out and started to unload the groceries out of the car. After about two minutes, the other saw him and joined him in order to help him. They carried four or five bags into the pad and put them away where they needed to be placed. Mike made sure every bit of food had a place and almost gave a mini lecture to make sure that their good fortune wasnt wasted.
"This might be the last good paycheck we get for a while." Mike said with a cautious tone in his voice.
"Mike." Micky said. "We may still get that record deal. It isnt over yet."
"He's right." Peter said. "Why the sudden negativity?"
"You went to talk to Sofie at the hotel. You never told us what happened. It was just natural of me to think that something bad happened." Mike explained.
"She said you made a mistake." Peter said. "I happen to believe her."
"You would, you love her." Davy said. "You revolve around her like a planet."
Mike looked at Micky. "And no Uranus jokes either." He said as his friend started to open his mouth.
"She said you might be jealous." Peter said. "Cause you broke up with Louise." Mike moved to object but Peter stopped his friend. "I told her that wasnt true. You are already seeing a new girl right?"
"Right. Thats where we were tonight, on dates." Mike said. "But you were the last to get home. What happened?"
"Yeah, did you discover a new organic store on the Norther Rim?" Davy laughed.
"No. By the way, that other store I went to closed last month so I do need a new place." Peter said. "I saw Meagan."
"Meagan?" Mike asked. "How is our girl?"
Peter raised an eyebrow much like his friend would. He could care less about her a month ago and now Mike was asking about her. Very strange. Peter shook his head, probably just natural curiousity.
"Shes ok. She just lost her job." Peter said mentally omitting the part about where she kissed him.
"That sucks." Micky said.
"Well she had a long term job ready for her." Peter said. "Shes going to bartend at the rehearsal dinner, and possibly the wedding reception." "When it happens." Mike and the others chorused.
"It will happen. Sofies just busy." Peter said. "And not how you think." He said snapping at Mike. Mike actually recoiled at this. "I'm sorry." He quickly apologized.
"I know you are going to marry her, but I have something to say." Mike said. "If she is what makes you happy, then maybe I did see someone else. I was never too sure anyway. Does this make you happy?"
"I just want you to give her something of a second chance." Peter said. "I mean look at her as if you never did see whatever it is you thought you saw."
Mike nodded. "I can try." He looked at Peter as he ate a banana. "But not for her, but for you man."

Five minutes later the phone rang. Peter made a dive over the living room couch in order to beat Davy to it.
"Hello? He said panting.
"You sound busy." The voice said. "I can call back."
"Sofie?" Peter said sitting on the couch. "Its so good to hear your voice."
"Yours too. I miss you already." Sofie said.
"Me too." Peter said as he tried to fight off Micky who placed Mikes used banana peel on his head. "When are you coming back?"
"This is the thing." Sofie said. "I am coming back this weekend. Friday maybe."
"Friday?" Peter asked. "Why so early."
"Something you said stirred something in me." Sofie said. "I have a wonderful guys as a fiancee' and no wedding in sight. Well I decided, if we don't get married now we won't do it for a long long time. At least not till the albums done."
"Theres an album?" Peter asked barely containing his glee.
"Yeah! It's amazing. We are on our way to the top babe." Sofie said the smile evident in her voice. "We dont even need you to come back and do a demo, they are very crazy about you out here. The record can be done out there."
"We sure are." Peter said.
"We can talk about the details when we get there. I want a wedding on the beach, Peter." Sofie said.
"I got a beach, and its right outside." Peter said having a brain fart. He knew it too. "When do you think we might do it?"
"I'm not sure." Sofie said. "But would two months be too soon?"
"Its not soon enough, I could marry you tomorrow." Peter said. "Well not tomorrow it could rain."
Sofie had a playful little laugh. He could have sworn he heard her mutter "Stop it." He waited for a second. "I mean stop it, you are making me laugh."
"I never knew I was that funny."
"Don't underestimate yourself Peter." Sofie said. "I'll see you soon, love."
"Love." Peter said and hung up. He ran out to the kitchen where the guys where having hamburgers. "Guess what?"
"What?" Mike asked.
"Sofies coming out to the coast. Could be as early as Friday." He smiled. "We got a record deal, and shes ready to talk wedding!"
"Groovy. And we already have a ring bearer." Micky joked. Davy rolled his eyes.
"I got the feeling you've made the same dumb joke before." Davy replied.
"I'm so excited." Peter said. "I have one more person to tell."
Peter went to the phone and dialed Meagans number. It would be awkward talking to her so soon after the kiss but she had to know. The phone rang once before the line was picked up.
"Hello?" An older tired voice answered. A woman.
"Hi, is Meagan there?" Peter asked.
"Who?" The woman asked.
"Meagan. She rents that apartment." Peter said. Maybe this woman is her mother. "Can I speak to her?"
"I'm sorry to tell you she isnt here." The woman said.
"When will she be back?" Peter asked.
"How the hell should I know? All I know is she packed her stuff, paid the last months rent and left town." She said. "Something about a bad choice. I'm sorry." The woman hung up the phone.
Peter slowly hung up his end. He stared off into space as he joined his friends at the table. A burger awaited him. He absent-mindly drizzled ketchup on it.
"Are you all right?" Davy asked.
Peter numbly nodded.
"Did you get Meagan?" Micky asked.
"No." Peter said. "She's gone."
"Huh." Mike said. "Thats weird."
Peter looked at Mike. "It is weird." He said to Mike. "You have no idea how weird."
