After the wedding, Peter remembered what happened next.
He went back to the pad where his friends were waiting for him. They had devastating news for him.
"Something happened after you left the wedding." Davy said.
"What?" Peter asked.
"After you left, Justin Weyman suddenly appeared. I guess he meant to stop the wedding." Mike said as he sat his friend down. "Once he found out that you knew about he and Sofie he got down on one knee and popped the question. She accepted."
Peter had looked down at the floor. "Didn't take long, did she? So what happened after that?"
"We have no idea." Davy said. "Mike was so disgusted we left right after that. We can safely assume though they got married right that moment and are celebrating."
Peter sighed. "Someone got married." He looked at his friends. "Meagan was there, but she left around the time Sofie made her way down the aisle." He thought for a moment. "Theres one thing I always wanted to know, and maybe you can tell me now."
"What is that?" Micky asked.
"For a while you guys were so into me getting married but then it changed around the time of what Mike saw at the New York dinner. I can only assume of what happened at the wedding that the kiss actually did happen now. But then you seem to have changed your mind."
"We did want you to get married, but I guess it was for our own selfish reasons. To get a record and get rich. But once we knew what kind of girl Sofie really was, we changed our mind about that." Mike explained. "I don't think you would have been happy with that girl."
"Even if it meant losing the record deal?" Peter asked. "It was our big moment."
"And it will come again man." Mike said putting his hand on Peters shoulder. "Whatever happens man, never blame this on you."
"He's right Peter." Davy said.
"I know." Peter said. "It took me so long to find out."
"You said Meagan was there." Micky said reminding him. "Why?"
"Sofie had said at the rehearsal dinner that one of the catering people was a problem. She was from out of town and backed out at the last minute." Peter said recalling the conversation. "It must have been Meagan. She had wrote me a letter telling me...that she was feeling something for me. That was why she bolted, cause she didn't want to get in the way."
"How do you feel about her?" Mike asked.
"What?" Peter asked.
"How do you feel about Meagan?" Micky asked.
"I'm not sure." Peter replied.
"How can you not be?" Davy said. "You talked more about Meagan than your own fiancee'."
"She was a friend, Davy." Peter scratched his head. "At least I thought so. I was always so glad to see her." He paced the room. "One thing I didnt tell you was what happened on your date night. I saw her on the way home from her last job and I gave her a ride. We talked and I watched her rollerskate. She kissed me."
"Whoa." Davy said. "And I thought I had girl troubles."
"She ran off....ok skated off...after that." Peter explained. "I hadnt seen her again till the wedding. Problem is that I don't think she saw that I saw her. She vanished."
Mike nodded. "What are you gonna do now?"
"Go to sleep. I think I've had a long day." Peter said. "I'm gonna wake up and then have another day and not think about how I was almost a husband today." He said sadly. "If you'll excuse me."
Mike nodded at his friend. "Take as long as you want."
Peter went into his room but could still hear them talking about it downstairs. After a while he ignored them. He had to start over again in the morning, back to square one. That and the tuxedo company would be wanting their tuxs back.
Months later
The guys were playing an out of town gig when Peter stepped out for a bite to eat. Peter hadn't dated since the non-wedding. In fact it seemed to back to normal girl wise. All the girls threw themselves at Davy and Micky. It kind of made Peter doubt that any girl would actually be interested in him. Maybe he should have questioned Sofies interest from the start. Maybe it was the air sickness medication she was on the night he met her.
Peter walked to a soda stand not too far outside the club they were playing. It would almost seem Sofie was true to her word and they would never play anywhere again, but that changed quickly. They got so many gigs they didn't know which ones to play first. He even got word that three weeks after she married someone else that they were already on their way to divorce. It didnt surprise Peter. It could have been him.
As Peter sat at a stool seat at the counter a woman with brown hair stood with her back to him. She seemed to be reading some sort of algebra text. He could barely see her face.
"Hello?" Peter said waving his hand to get her attention.
She slowly turned around after putting her book down. Peters eyes widened with surprise.
"Meagan!" He smiled.
"Peter?" Meagan questioned. "What are you doing here?"
"We're playing a club date over there. I'm on a half hour break." He explained. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm going to college!" She said pointing to her book. "I'm gonna try to make something out of myself. Seems a degree in mixology won't open a lot of doors."
"I was never good at math." Peter frowned.
"I know. Once I get into fractions and decimals its a no-Meagans land." She laughed. There was an awkward pause. "So wheres Sofie? How was the honey moon?"
Peter frowned. "You don't know?"
"I don't know what? I left soon before the beautiful bride made her appearance." Meagan said. "I moved here and havent looked back since."
"We didn't get married." Peter said.
"What?"
"I found out that shes been with this record guy ever since we met." Peter explained. "Not ten minutes after I left her at the altar she married the other guy. Its not gonna last though, I hear rumors of divorce."
"Are you all right?" Meagan said unconsciously laying her hand on his. Her hand felt warm even though she had been working with ice cream sodas.
"I'm all right. In fact I'm great." Peter said with a smile.
"Liar." Meagan said softly.
"I know. Pants on fire." Peter said. Meagan nodded. "I've had something on my mind."
"What is that? Maybe I can help you out."
"There is this girl. Shes really sweet and she barely knows how to roller skate. I think about her a lot. Shes beautiful to me." He said softly. "But thing is she keeps vanishing from my life. Its happened twice now."
Meagan looked at him with a surprised look in his eyes. "I almost gave up hope of ever seeing her again." He said as he looked back into her eyes. "I decided that if I ever see her again I would never let her out of my sight."
"Who is this girl?" Meagan asked.
"You don't need to ask." Peter asked. He leaned in and kissed her on the lips. He moved back and looked at her. You don't need to ask. It's you."
Meagan had tears in her eyes. "Really?"
"Really. Its definately you." Peter said with a small smile.
"Then what am I doing here?" Meagan asked. She tore off the apron and dumped it on the floor. The one other person working there stared at her.
"What are you doing?" She demanded.
"I'm quitting." Meagan said. "I have a few things to see to." She said jumping over the counter. "I'm going to see Peters band play."
The woman rolled her eyes and went back to sweeping the floor.
Epilogue
It had been a year since that day. Peter sat down stairs in the pad looking at pictures. Meagan moved in with the guys, got her degree and got a nice little job in a downtown bank. She and Peter were sharing their own room while the others were taking up the extra bedroom. They were currently looking for a seperate place to live, but not too far from the guys.
Peter had found some old pictures of Sofie while he was rooting around in old photo albums. He had gathered them in an old shoe box. He was looking at one picture when Meagan tapped his shoulder.
"Whats up?" She asked. "Oooh Sofie."
"Yep." Peter said. "Thrice married Sofie. Poor thing can't seem to figure out what she wants."
"Good thing its not you. I'd kick her ass." Meagan smiled evily.
"Meagan!"
"I can take her." She assured him. "She'd break a nail and forfeit the fight." She gestured to the box. "So what are you doing?"
"Cleaning house." Peter said as he got up. "Time to say goodbye." He dumped the photos into the trash. He turned and wrapped his arms around Meagan who had a light robe on. "I've got the future on my mind."
