After dinner, Peter noticed a big change in Mikes attitude as they rode to the hotel in the limo. He avoided eye contact with Sofie and didn't talk much to the record excecutive Justin Weyman. Peter thought this was a strange move considering this was the person they were supposed to "suck up to" if they wanted a record deal to further their careers. Mikes odd behavior continued after they got to the hotel. He was the first one out of the limo. He darted into the hotel foyer like a cockroach who had just seen the kitchen light turn on.
He mumbled a goodbye to Sofie and got into an elevator. Micky and Davy soon followed, presumably to question Mike on his sudden change in behavior. Peter stood in the lobby with Sofie, and held her hand.
"Whats wrong with him?" Sofie asked.
"Maybe the food didnt take well. Mike tries not to eat right away after being on such long trips. He found out the hard way that eating right after arrival is a bad idea. Course we as a band also found that out." Peter explained.
"I hope hes all right." Sofie kissed him on the cheek. "I gotta go."
"Its such an early night. We can go to a movie." Peter offered.
"I got some things to finish up." She smiled. "Love."
"Love." Peter repeated and kissed her on the lips. She pulled back suddenly and left the lobby with a wave. Peter breathed on his hand wondering if it was his breath that drove her away. He did have one too many slices of garlic bread.
When Peter got to the room, he noticed the guys sitting on one of the beds facing the door. They had very serious expressions on their faces.
"Petah." Davy said.
"Whats wrong?" He asked.
"Mike has something to tell you." Micky said standing up. "And I think you better sit down." He said directing Peter to his seat.
"Whats wrong? You are all so serious...even for you Micky." Peter said with a worried tone in his voice.
Davy got up and went to the bathroom. Mike got up and faced his friend.
"There is something you have to know about Sofie." Mike said. He wrung his hands together. "It's hard to tell you cause you know we love you man."
"I love you guys too." Peter said cautiously. "Tell me whats going on. I don't like this, its kinda creeping me out." Peter said as Davy came out of the bathroom with a plastic cup of water.
"Why not start at the beginning Mike." Davy said sitting in a chair opposite the bed. He was about to turn on the tv but thought better of it.
"When I went to the bathroom, I thought I heard some giggling nearby. I went into a stall and uh do what you do in a bathroom."
"When its Davy its mostly hair combing." Peter pointed out.
Davy nodded.
"Well when I got done with my business I went out the door and saw a man and a woman leaving the womens room. They were kissing and giggling. Kinda like high school kids."
"How sweet." Peter said with a relieved smile. "Its nice that someone is in love with someone like that."
"Not so sweet pardner." Mike said. "I began to turn the corner to come back to our table and thats when....thats when....when I saw who it was." Mike took a deep breath and took the glass of water from Davy and downed it in one gulp. "I needed that." He sighed. Peter made a shrug gesture that prompted him to finish. "It was Sofie and Justin."
"No." Peter said.
"I'm sorry Peter."
"I'm sorry but you are wrong." Peter said standing up. "Wrong wrong wrong." He shook his head.
"Its true." Micky said. "Mike would never lie to us."
"But he could be wrong." Peter said firmly. "You saw someone else kissing that guy."
"It was Sofie." Mike said. "The way they were kissing I'm surprised she has any tonsils left."
Peter left. "You're wrong. Sofie loves me, and we're gonna get married."
"When?" Davy asked. "It seems to be getting farther and farther away from any wedding day."
"It'll be soon." Peter insisted. He went for the door.
"Where are you going?" Micky asked.
"I don't know. Somewhere else." Peter shook his head. "I hope when I get back Mike remembers who that guy was really kissing cause it wasn't my Sofie." He shook his head. "Not her." He went out the door and slammed it on the way out.
Peter found himself in the lobby sitting down on one of the benches. He put his head in his hands. She couldn't do that to him, Peter decided. She loved him too much, and he loved her.
He shook his head and got up. He needed to talk to someone but not the guys. He was still a little too mad at Mike for telling him that stuff. He walked by a phone bank and looked at them for a second. Meagan. He could talk to Meagan.
He went to the phone and made a collect call to Meagans phone number. He was hoping she was home. A quiet voice answered after three rings.
"Hello?" The voice said.
"Meagan?" Peter asked..
"Peter?" Meagan answered. "Where are you? I havent seen you around town."
"In New York." He answered with a smile. "It was a last minute trip. We could be this close to getting a record deal."
"How nice for you!" Meagan said happily. Peter heard a soft sniffle on the line. "This could really be big for you, and I'm really happy for you."
"You don't sound happy." Peter said. "Are you crying?"
There was a long pause. "Yes." She said slowly. "I have been crying."
"Whats wrong?" Peter asked.
"Don't ask. I don't want to bog down your trip for you." Meagan said her voice becoming a little more clearer.
"I think thats been done for me already." Peter thought. "Please tell me."
Another long pause. "Okay." She took another second. "Remember Roger?"
"Yeah." Peter said remembering the young man she was with at the street fair.
"Hes history." Meagan said. "I caught him with another woman at a restaurant." She laughed. "The same one I work at. God How could be he so stupid. Hes wants to be a lawyer for crying out loud."
"He cheated on you?" Peter said.
"The funnier part is that it could have been going on since he started coming back to town. You know to see me." She said quickly. "It just happened today so you can see I'm still in the shock part of it."
"You don't derserve him. You need someone nice." Peter said.
"Who? If you find him, my numbers in the book." She joked. "Well maybe give me a day or two. I think a hair-washings in order."
"I'm sorry I'm not there with you." Peter said. "I could buy you some ice cream or something."
"Ice cream for a broken heart." Meagan sighed. "Sounds like a nice idea. A banana split?" She said putting the emphasis on "split".
"Could be a sundae." Peter said. "A cheery or a cherry outlook."
Meagan chuckled on the line. She then gasped. "I'm late for work."
"I'll see you when I get back then." Peter said.
"I just want you to know one thing." Megan said. "You are very lucky to have found Sofie. Don't ever let that girl go, ok?"
Peter thought this over for a minute. He nodded into the phone. "Okay."
Meagan said a quick goodbye into the phone and hung up. Peter put the phone back on the cradle and left the phone bank. He ran his hands through his hair and he headed for the hotels front door. He had to talk to Sofie. Maybe hearing something from her would clear this all up very quickly.
