After a elevator ride down

After racing through the halls, Scully and Dr Danny Nyland finally reached the site Mulder had spoken about on the phone. It was in the small in-house-patient laundry area on the second floor where the second victim was found. Scully tapped Mulder on the back where he was talking to Dr Phillip Watters.
"What happened?" Scully asked.
"Oh my god." Danny said.
"Friend of yours?" Scully asked.
"Sort of. Shes my sort of girlfriend. Was anyway." Danny cleared his throat.
"How can this be happening in my hospital?" Watters demanded. "I know everything that goes on here."
"But somehow something slipped through." Scully said.
"This victim looks like it was killed in the same manner of your Dr Kronk. Not much of the body is left intact. But we can't do anything without an another autopsy." Mulder said. He stopped when he saw something moving.
"Maybe thats not necessary." Scully said as she caugh his line of vision.
Behind one of the washboards there was a gaping hole. Mulder moved the washboard to get a better view. There was puss and other miscellanous bodily fluids dripping from the top. Danny took his hand and covered his mouth. There was an outrageous stench coming from the hole.
"Whatever killed Kronk and this off duty nurse went this way." Mulder inserted a flashlight. "Whats behind this wall?"
Dr Watters thought."It leads to the heating system. From here that pipe over there goes straight down into the furnace."
"Is it on?" Scully asked, getting an idea.
"Its the spare, used in blackouts." Watters said.
"We have to get down there." Mulder said.
"I'll show you." Danny said guiding the agents out the door. Danny and the agents took the stairs down the to the basement.
"Stay behind us Danny." Scully said.
"It's been 20 minutes since the death." Mulder said.
"Is there a chance that whatever its...fluke...whatever..that it might have reached the outside?" Danny asked.
"Not really. The type of fluke we had encountered before didnt have any legs. I can bet anything that it hasn't evolved anything close to lower appendances." Scully said.
They heard a loud thump coming out of the pipe. Danny spun on his feet and narrowlly missed becoming a happy meal for the fluke which sailed out of the pipe at maddening speed. Mulder and Scully aimed their guns and fired. It continued to creep toward them. Mulder used his last bullet to hit it square in the head.
"Nice shot." Danny said as he walked out of the darkness where he had moved.

Later

After the carcass had been discarded, Mulder and Scully were walking to their rental car with Watters.
"Thanks for helping us with this thing." Watters said.
"You're welcome." Mulder said.
"Though I am sorry for your loss." Scully said.
"Thank you." Watters said. "Take care."
Mulder and Scully got into the car and took off.
"Do you think we will ever be here again?" Scully asked.
"I dunno. I stopped trying to predict the future years ago." Mulder said as they headed for the Chicago airport and towards home.
