One Long Night

Desy was finishing carving up a pumpkin when Jean and Nancy came in the front door. They were both carrying small bags.
"How did the shopping go?" Desy asked. She turned her pumpkin around. It looked like Batman, that is if Wolverine from the same comics world had carved the pumpkin.
"How neat!" Jean said. "Good job."
"Ok so we're done with the practice pumpkin, wheres the real deal?" Nancy winked.
"This is the real deal." Desy said putting her hands on the top.
"I'm just kidding. Look out for elephants though." Nancy warned. She then frowned. "Have I said that before?"
"Nah, but it sounds like something weird you would say." Tippy said coming out of another room.
"I saw it on Countdown." Nancy said still thinking. "I thought I told you before." Jean looked at Desy who shrugged.
"Are you all right?" Desy asked as she picked the pumpkin up.
"I think so. Maybe I didnt get enough sleep." Nancy shook her head.
"What kind of loot did you bring us?" Desy asked as they inspected the bags. Rosie strolled down the stairs holding a large amount of costumes. "Oh good, our costumes for tonight."
"Yea, lucky me gets to stay home and give out candy tonight." Rosie stuck her tongue out. "And I know that party is gonna be so cool."
"It will be." Desy said looking through the costumes. Nancy pulled hers out of the pile. "What is that?" Rosie asked.
"I am going dressed as a follower of the wiccan religion." Nancy said proudly.
"Don't let her fool you, shes going as a witch." Desy said. "Darn it, wheres that other claw?"
"You havent told us what you got at the store." Tippy reminded her friend. "Nothing stupid I hope."
"Unless you call lots of good candy stupid." Nancy said dumping one bag on the table.
"Do you know how hard it is to keep this one out of the chocolate?" Jean asked.
"Yes." Desy said. She blinked. "I have no idea why I knew that."
"Me neither. And I was going to say it." Jean nodded.
"Maybe we all need more sleep." Nancy thought out loud.
"Its just a weird kind of day." Tippy said looking at what would be Jeans angel costume. "Why can't I wear this?"
"Cause I had dibs." Jean smiled. "You will make such a cute Huck Finn."
"Fab-o. Why do I suddenly feel like whitewashing the fence?" Tippy asked while poking the other bag. "Whats this?"
Nancy smiled and pulled something out of the other bag. It was a medium size cukoo clock with a farm motif.
"Ugh." Desy said while doing a full body shiver. "That just gave me the biggest chill." She put down her pumpkin. "That is so weird."
"Its just a clock." Nancy said pushing a button on the back that opened the door for the "Cukoo". A cow came out instead of the traditional bird.
"That clock just gave me the creeps. I don't know why."
Desy said picking up her pumpkin. "Gotta put this beauty outside."
"Quick, how long before its trashed?" Jean asked.
"I was gonna say that." Nancy protested.
"Ten minutes." Tippy said.
"Yea." Jean nodded.
"Five minutes." Nancy said. "I get the feeling anything big and orange around here is history." "I thought Nancy would have gone for twenty." Rosie said.
"I was going to." Nancy said thinking. "But its gonna be sooner." She said as Desy went to the front door. "Tell you what, if I'm wrong, then I will sing tonight. Its open mike night. And you pick the song."
"And if you are right?" Desy said opening the door.
"I pick the song." She smiled evily.
"Fine but no AC/DC." Jean warned.
"Fine by me. I'm still getting over Celine Diones godawful version of 'Shook Me All Night Long' on Vegas Vh1 divas last year." Nancy smiled. Tippy laughed.
Desy thought. "Six minutes. To be different."
"We could be heading for duet-ville." Jean warned Tippy.
"Ugh I know." Tippy said looking at Nancy. She smiled again. "I don't trust her as far as I can throw her."
"Which wouldn't be too far." Nancy pointed out.
"This whole pumpkin thing has a feel of de ja vu." Rosie said. "Since I won't be at the party, I dont have to pick a time limit."

Time quickly passed as Nancy stowed her new clock in her room, upon Desys orders.
"That thing is giving me bad vibes." Desy confessed. "Its strange."
"I'm sorry." Nancy apologized. "When is Harley coming in?"
"Later tonight. Shes got her own costume but she wouldnt give up what it is." Tippy said remembering the email.
"So it won't be Paris Hilton, eh?" Nancy asked.
"That guy on the today show dressed as her." Desy said. "I had to wash my eyes after seeing that." She stuck her tongue out.
A big whump sound came from outside. Desy and Nancy went to the window.
"Five minutes and we got pumpkin goo!" Nancy rejoiced. Tippy and Jean looked at each other and rolled their eyes.
"So what are we singing?" Tippy asked.
"Don't worry, you'll find out at the party. I'll have lyric sheets." She smiled.
Rosie covered her mouth with her hand before she laughed.
"I think she knows something we dont." Jean said.
"No I don't, I swear." She smiled. "Boy that tapes gonna be worth a lot on ebay."

The party

The girls showed up at the party all dressed in their costumes. Nancy irritated Desy one more time by asking why her Wolverine costume lacked an extra claw.
"You know it vanished without a trace. Hopefully no ones using it to cut the cheese in the kitchen." Desy sighed.
"Oohhh stinky." Nancy waved her hand in front of her face.
"You know what I meant." Desy frowned. Micky came up from behind and nabbed Nancy.
"We need to make extra snacks." Micky explained to the girls. "We got here late."
"Gee I wonder why?" Jean asked as she spotted Mike and Davy in their costumes. They were dressed like Hansel and Gretel. "I'm not gonna ask."
"Better off not knowing." Nancy said producing a sheet of paper. "For our open mike tonight, Jeanie and Tippy are singing the first song." She gave Peter the sheet of paper. It was the notes to the song she had assigned to the girls.
"So whe do we find out what we sing?" Jean asked.
"Don't worry, you will get the sheet when the boys have memorized the song." Nancy explained.
"Done." Peter said handing it back.
"Wow smart and cute." Tippy smiled. "No wonder I like him."

A few minutes later Nancy finished making some tuna rolls with Micky in the kitchen, but it looked like Micky had a free sample. Desy smiled and shook her head as Micky wiped some tuna off his face. She turned to see a pimply faced guy stalking her through the crowd. It was some neighbor guy who admitted he had a crush on her. She rolled her eyes and exited stage left. She spotted Harley entering the front door with a shepardess costume on.
"So wheres the sheep?" Desy asked.
"I have no sheep. I think they saw me and ran away from home." Harley looked at Desy. "This is all I could get at the last minute."
"I thought you had a costume." Desy rubbed her head.
"They lost one of my luggage. My costume was in it. I was going to be a princess." Harley sighed. "What about your costume?"
"If anyone else asks about my costume, they are gonna get a free back rub." Desy said showing her a clawed hand. "There was supposed to be two of them but one is gone."
"Ah." Harley nodded. "Where is Rosie?"
"Candy duty."
"Lucky sheila." Harley looked at the stage. "Whats going on?" She asked as Nancy, Tippy and Jean gathered on stage.
"Jeanie and Tippy lost a bet to Nancy so they are singing a song of her choice." Desy explained.
"Talk about making a deal with the devil." Harley laughed. "So what are they singing, I got you babe?"
"That's too obvious. And I think they know that words to that song, cause Nancy is giving them lyrics to this song here, so it must be something they dont know." Desy informed Harley.
"Ah." Harley nodded. "This could be classic."

"Hey everyone! Look up here!" Nancy called out.
"I'm not looking unless you are throwing out money!" One guy called out.
Nancy threw out two pennies. "Okay now thats done, Tippy and Jean are going to sing, so be a good audience and don't boo....at least not till the end." She smiled. "I'm just kidding." She put her hands out. "Jean and Tippy."

Jean looked at the sheet of paper. Nancy had their parts clearly marked off. Apparently she sang first. She swallowed a lump in her throat and began.
"Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane. I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain. Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye. God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes."

Jean passed the sheet to Tippy for her part. She quinted as she sang. "They say Spain is pretty though I've never been. Well Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen. Oh and he should know, he's been there enough. Lord I miss Daniel, oh I miss him so much."

They sang together now. "Daniel my brother you are older than me. Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal. Your eyes have died but you see more than I Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky." They sounded pretty good together.

Desy and Harley moved next to Nancy who was eating one of her own tuna rolls. She smiled at Harley.
"Aint bad." Nancy observed on her food. "Coulda used more pepper."

Jean began singing again by herself. "Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane."

Tippy sang the next part. "I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain."

Jean and Tippy finished the song together with the last few verses. "Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye. God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes. Oh God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes."

The crowd loudly applauded when they were done.
"I aint ever doing a bet with Nancy ever again." Tippy vowed.
"I wouldnt bet on that. Shes always finding something weird to bet on." Jean said as she looked Nancy giving her an ok sign. Jean smiled but then remembered one of the Mst3k episodes had a guy with an Ok sign, then he went "It stinks!" Course Nancy suddenly remembered her own referance and gave her a thumbs up with a huge cheesy grin.
"Lets party." Jean said.

Home

"That was a great song mates." Harley said after getting out of her costume.
"Thanks." Jean said. "I dont know why we needed lyric sheets though."
"Not everyone knows all the lyrics." Nancy said. "I know I didnt know some so I needed a reminder myself at times."
"Ah." Tippy said. "Time to hit the hay."
"Thats a sheep joke, I know it." Harley moaned. They walked past Rosies room. She was already fast asleep.
"Don't forget to change the clocks." Nancy reminded them. "Everyone here celebrated Halloween early this year." She said as she moved into her room. "I can change my own clock."
Desy nodded. "I was gonna tell you that."
"And the clock gives you the creeps. I know." Nancy said as she put the right time on it. She then moved it back an hour. She then went to bed, falling asleep long before the cow "cukoo" popped out of its little barn.
"Moooooooo." Nancy heard as she drifted away.

Morning

Nancy awoke to the sounds and hustle and bustle. She saw Jean walk by the door all dressed and ready to go somewhere. She then heard Rosie ask where the halloween costumes are.
"Upstairs I think." Desy was heard replying.
"Upstairs?" Nancy thought. "But we left them downstairs and I fell asleep with mine on." She looked down and saw her pink nightgown. "Weird."
"Are you up and dressed yet sleepyhead?" Jean poked her head through the door.
"I'm up but not dressed." Nancy replied.
"Good, cause we got shopping to do." Jean said. "Someone done ate all the candy." She said adding a weird accent.
"Okay." Nancy said. She looked at her calendar. "October 30. Hows is that possible?"
