Songstress

A X-Files/Friends Crossover By Nancy Boardman
This is the long (?) awaited sequel to the Neighbor, my first foray into fan fiction. Ever wonder when Mulder and Scully will actually find a authentic alien abduction survivor? Who could it be? Well in another of my dream episodes of the X-Files, Mulder and Scully find out while interacting with the characters of Friends, another favorite of mine.

Disclaimer and other legal stuff of import:
The characters of the X-files and Friends are not my own, I am borrowing them. They belong to Chris Carter and Associates. Friends belong to NBC and Warner Brothers Television.

Midnight Phoebes place
Phoebe couldn't sleep. She felt like she could hear voices in her head all day long. And not the crazy kind of voices, mind you. It would start whenever she would sing at Central Perk. When she started singing that day she got a migraine so powerful that Rachel had to ask Ross to drive her home today. Everyone was worried about her. Despite her turning down a trip to the doctor, Rachel had scheduled a visit for tomorrow morning.

Phoebe got up from her bed. Phoebe lived with her grandmother in the same house. Her grandmother was her only connection to her mother who died years ago. She walked softly through the living room. Grandma was out like a light. Phoebe was about to get another glass of milk when she heard a humming sound from outside the house. She put the milk back into the fridge and turned a small light on. She walked to the window. Phoebe gasped in wonder when she saw the colorful lights.

"Ooooh. " Phoebe cooed. "So pretty."

The light grew in intensity until it completely engulfed Phoebe in it's warmth. The one thing that Phoebe would wonder for now and forever is why she didn't scream. Not even when she disappeared from the house.

9:00 Phoebes place
Rachel knocked on the door to Phoebes place. She waited for a minute then she knocked again. She was here to bring Phoebe to the doctor as she had promised the day before. Rachel was worried about her friend. Her songs were starting to sound normal, a huge indicator something was wrong. Rachel knew that this had nothing to do with the non-discovery of her fathers family a couple of months ago. She was about to pound on the door again when the door opened. It was Phoebes grandmother. She held a pen in one hand. Apparently she was updating the phone book again.

"What do you want?" Phoebes grandmother asked her.

"Is Phoebe here?" Rachel asked her. "I was supposed to take her to the doctor this morning. Can I assume she is already there?"

"I haven't seen Phoebe. Not since I went to bed last night. Her bed wasn't even slept in. I thought she made it and went to the coffee place she sings at."

"I just came from there." Rachel informed here. "She's not there."

"Sorry, dear. But I can't help you. Especially this early in the morning." Phoebe's grandmother said as she closed the door in Rachel's face.

What a rude woman! Rachel had no choice but to go back downstairs where Ross was waiting in the car for her. As she entered the elevator car she thought about all the possible places she could be.

"She wasn't at my place." Rachel reasoned. "And she wasn't Chandler and Joeys' place this morning. That was odd because Xanadu was on again." Phoebe watched the movie with the guys when Ross started dating her. Rachel walked out of the elevator and headed out the front door. She walked across the street and got in on the passenger side of the car. Ross was tuning the radio.

"So." He stopped playing with the radio. "Where's Phoebe?"

"She's not home." Rachel said flatly.

"Maybe she already went to the doctor and she is waiting for us there." Ross offered hopefully. Rachel looked over in his direction with an exasperated look on her face.

"The doctors office is across town." Rachel informed him. "She would have never made it that far in this short amount of time."

Ross looked over his shoulder, then pulled into traffic. "Maybe she was abducted by a UFO."

"Ross this is no time to be funny." Rachel said rolling down the window, "That's Chandlers job."

Half and hour later.
When Rachel got home she called everyone, except the missing Phoebe, to Chandlers apartment to talk It was a trying couple of minutes while Monica had to drag Joey away from Gilligans Island. They were all situated around the kitchen counter. Chandler was making coffee from an old filter. Monica saw him and pointed it out, as only Monica can do.

"Chandler that is sick." Monica said taking the filter away from Chandler. She held it by two fingers and walked it over to the trash bin. "You should know better."

"I'm sorry Mon. Maybe someone should point out to you that is the third time this week you wore those pants."

Monica screeched and before she could do anything Rachel stopped her.

"Quit it you two!" She said stepping in between them. "This situation is stressing us all out." Monica sat back down. "Think people. Where would Phoebe go?"

"She wouldn't go to Ursulas'." Joey offered. "After all, I dated her sister. I think they still haven't resolved that yet."

"And we're the only other people she knows in New York." Chandler said.

Rachel sat down on the floor between Joeys and Chandlers chairs. "Then there's only one thing to do." She got Chandlers phone and dialed a long distance number.

"Who are you calling?" Monica asked Rachel while she waited for the line to be picked up.

"The only people who can help us now." Rachel answered as the ringing stopped.

Fox Mulder was talking to Dana Scully when the phone rang. They had been discussing the latest Washington Redskins game. As a gift the last person that was involved in one of their cases had given them box seats. Mulder, who was never able to turn down a good deal, leaped at the opportunity and took Scully to the game.

"You don't understand!" Scully erupted. "The ball was in the end zone before the flag was dropped."

"I say it wasn't." The phone rang next to him. "How about we agree to disagree?"

"Fine." She sniffed and prepared to leave.

Mulder picked the phone up. "Mulder."

"Fox Mulder?" Rachel asked on the other end. Once his identity was revealed the rest of the gang looked at each other and recalled the last time the agent was there. Since the discovery about the truth of the ugly naked guy, across the street has been silent.

Mulder was a little put-off when she used his first name. "Yes." He answered while reaching for some paper.

"We have a problem." Rachel said. "Phoebe is missing."

"Scully." Mulder hissed as she was about to leave. "Come here." He frantically gestured. "Are you sure she didn't go on tour with her guitar? Smelly Cat '96?"

"Positive." Rachel asked. "Are you free?" She asked as she stood up and walked to the counter.

Mulder looked at Scully. "You have any plans?"

"Mulder, you know I have no life."

"We'll be there in a few hours."

Rachel wrote down the info. "We're in Chandlers apartment. Is there anywhere we can meet?"

"We can meet there. Then maybe you can take us over to Phoebes place? We'd like to look for clues."

"Okay." Rachel hung up.

Mulder hung up the phone and got out of his seat. He went to his file cabinet and got one of the many requisitions forms he would need. Scully had placed her briefcase next to the door. She stretched, then yawned as Mulder gave her one of his forms.

"So tell me. How is the famous Rachel doing?" Scully asked while putting the form on the desk.

"Phoebe Buffay is missing." Mulder said as he started to fill out his form.

"It could be just me but isn't that a job for the local NYPD?"

"I think it's worth investigating." Mulder said as he finished his form. He reached across and retrieved hers. She didn't say a word as it was filled out. "Rachel said she disappeared, possibly during the night."

"You never asked for any details." Scully confronted him.

"I'm simply telling you what to expect."

"And what should I expect? The fact that when she comes back she'll have a metal device in her nose?" Scully asked while touching her own nose. "Ridiculous."

"We don't even know she's coming back."

"She will." Scully nodded. "Just get her singing and she'll be back by Friday. With an apology note attached."

Mulder had to laugh at his partners joke. She rolled her eyes up and got out of her seat. "I want to get some sleep before we go Mulder. Make the trip for tomorrow."

"Will do."

Rachel opened the door to the apartment she and Monica shared. Monica obviously was out. It was a good thing, It took her weeks to get over Agent Mulder. And now he was coming back. Monica swore on a stack of cookbooks that she was over him. Way over.

"I'm so over him I'm in next month." Monica promised her. Oh boy, here we go again. Rachel sighed and sat at her kitchen table. Now she had to do the unthinkable. Well not really unthinkable, her boss made her replace Phoebe with another singer. That gig didn't last long. Rachel got out a phone book and found the number she was looking for. She reached for the phone and dialed. She hoped she wasn't doing anything stupid.

"Hello?" Rachel said when the line was picked up. "Chucks Karaoke? I need a machine, and pronto!"

Noontime
Rachel had just barely finished setting up the karaoke machine when the noontime rush started. That was usually Phoebes' peak performance time. Rachel looked out into the audience hoping to see a glimpse of her friend. She was really getting worried. She spotted Chandler, Joey and Monica out in the crowd. Chandler and Monica had the luxury of having the day off. Joey hadn't found a decent job since his character on Days of Our Lives was killed off. Rachel took a deep breath and tapped lightly on the microphone in front of her. The loud feedback the mike gave off. Rachel smiled sheepishly and cleared her throat.

Hi. I know you usually come here to hear Phoebe Buffay sing but today she is uh." What to say? I don't want to set off a panic. People have to have there dose of Phoebe with their coffee. "she is out sick." There, it's half true. "Today we have a special treat for all you music lovers! We have just requisitioned a karaoke machine. If you want to come up and sing go ahead. You can even sing smelly cat." Rachel finished hopefully. She laughed slightly embarrassed and looked at the audience.

No one in the audience moved. "One at a time please." Chandler muttered under his breath. "She is getting mortified up there."

Chandler got up from his chair and picked a tape and moved Rachel away from the mike.

"Let me do it." Chandler begged. "If I get stale I can go into my standup act."

Rachel helped him set up the tape. As she sat down she asked Joey. "He doesn't have a clue on what to do up there. Does he?"

"Come on." Joey said. "He'll think of something."

As Chandler started his act, which included singing "Rhinestone Cowboy" Rachel went back to work. She picked up a tray of coffees Gunther set in front of her. When she had delivered her payload she sat down next to Joey and Monica.

"As much as I like Chandlers bravery...." Rachel began.

"It's not the same." Monica finished for her.

"Yeah, how many people remember that song?" Joey said.

Monica and Rachel looked at each other both realizing that Joey had yet again missed the point.

Mulder and Scully had arrived at their hotel at about the time Chandler was launching into an another tune. Scully managed to note on their way to their rooms that they had the same rooms as they did last time.

"There's one major difference this time." Mulder noted.

"Yeah." Scully agreed. She knew what he was talking about. Last time they were here she brought her dog Queegqueg with her. The delightful little dog disappeared while they were investigating a lake monster that turned to be something else. There was no doubt in Scullys mind her little soul-mate had been made a quick lunch. Scully exhaled as she opened the door to her room. Mulder followed her in.

"It's too bad we have to share the same room." Mulder said as he placed his bag on the table. "But we have double beds in here."

"Should we get to work?" Scully said yawning. "I want to keep moving, otherwise I'll fall asleep again."

"Sorry about waking you up so early." Mulder apologized. The airline had registered them for the wrong flight so instead of the six p.m. flight they got the six a.m. flight. Scully was none too pleased when Mulder called early that morning. She should be used to Mulder, its been almost five years now!

"We'll go to Central Perk. Then We can Take Rachel and the others over to where Phoebe lives. From the sounds of it, Rachel is the only one who has ever gotten a good look at where she lived."

"Yeah. Remember they were always either at the Gellar/Green place or the Bing/Tribune place."

"This will be an experience for all involved." Mulder said as the left the hotel room.

Rachel checked her watch. It was almost one. If the agents didn't come soon, she didn't know what to do.

"That's a good singer you have up there now." Chandler commented while sipping his Latte.

"Yeah, he really has a knack for it. I didn't think this idea was good, but it seems to be a hit."

"Fabulous." Chandler set his cup down. "Rach can you do me a favor?"

"Yeah?"

"Can you take the cuffs off now?" He raised his hands. When Chandler refused to relinquish the mike she slapped them on and led him away. It was a last resort, but it had to be done.

Rachel walked over with the key. "You promise not to sing anymore?"

"Scouts honor. I think I was straining my voice anyway."

As Rachel unlocked Chandlers cuffs Mulder and Scully entered the room. Monica was the first to sit up and take notice.

"Agent Mulder. Agent Scully." Monica gasped and walked over to greet them.

Rachel followed Monica to the door. She guided them over to the big couch in the middle of the room. "It's about time you got here! I almost sent Joey after you two!"

"Big traffic accident." Scully explained as she moved a cushion on the couch. "Now tell me. When was the last time you saw Phoebe?"

"Ross drove her home last night." Monica said. "Phoebe said she wanted to go to the movies and then she was going home to rest. I guess she changed her mind. She had this huge migraine all day long."

"Migraine?" Mulder asked taking interest.

"Yeah, she could barely sing or do anything else."

"I would say about the same thing." Rachel said. "I went to her place this morning. We had scheduled a doctors appointment for her. Maybe he could have helped her. But she wasn't there, and her grandmother hasn't seen her at all."

Mulder and Scully nodded. "When Ross gets here we can go over to Phoebes place." Scully stated. "How long until he gets home?"

"Ross is home today. I'll give him a call." Rachel popped up and headed for the nearest phone.

"How many of you have actually seen Phoebes place?" Mulder asked the group. They all shook their heads.

"Rachel I think is the only one who has ever seen it." Chandler said. "Maybe this will be fun."

Rachel came back over and plopped herself down next to the agents. "He'll be here in fifteen minutes."

"We can wait in our place if its more comfortable for you guys." Monica offered the agents.

"That'll be nice." Mulder said as he started to rise. Scully tugged his sleeve and she looked outside. "On second thought why don't we meet you up there? We have some last minute details to take care of."

"Fine." Rachel said and started to leave. The others followed her on the way out. Mulder and Scully hung back. Mulder sat back down as Scully turned to face him.

"This is turning out to be more serious than I first thought." Scully stated. Mulder nodded.

"Do you think anyone would have any reason to kidnap her?"

"No. There would have been a call by now. A ransom demand would have been made." Scully fidgeted in her seat. "Do you think they called the police?"

"If they did they wouldn't have gotten any help." Mulder expressed rising once again. Scully collected her things. "She wouldn't have been officially missing until tomorrow. It might have been too late by then."

"So do you think we will find anything in her place that would indicate her whereabouts?"

"I doubt it." Mulder confessed. "But I do have a few hunches of my own."

"Figured as much." Scully said as they left the cafe. "What are they so far?"

"I think our Phoebe has been abducted...." "by a UFO?" Scully finished for him. "That would be strange, and unlikely. Even for Phoebe Buffay!!"

"We shouldn't rule it out, Scully. When we DO find her...and we will...I want you to do a checkup on her. See if everything is well in Phoebeland."

"All right." Scully conceded. "But if it turned out she was not abducted..."

"I'll take full responsibility for whatever they throw our way." Scully sighed as they entered the apartment building and climbed the stairs.

Half an hour later Monica/Rachel's place
Ross arrived soon after the agents did. As Rachel explained the situation to Ross, Scully and Mulder were looking across the street. The building that contained the last tenant, the ugly naked guy, was gone.

"What happened to that apartment building?" Scully asked Rachel who had just finished talking with Ross.

"We don't know. To tell the truth the building disappeared the morning after you went back to Washington DC" Rachel informed her. Scully looked across the way.

"But that's impossible! It couldn't just disappear overnight."

"Hey, anything is possible around here." Rachel said sitting down. "Ross is bringing the car round front. How do you want to do this?"

"We'll take you and Monica in the rental car. Ross can follow with the others." Mulder said as he led the group out of the building.

A few minutes later they packed onto a filthy smelly elevator. Monica grimaced as the smell reached her nose. She was about to gag as they got off a Phoebes floor. Mulder followed Rachel down the hall to the apartment.

"Here it is." Rachel said. "It looks like Phoebes gram is out for the day."

Rachel stood back as Mulder jimmied the lock. It opened easily. The group slowly walked in as Scully turned on the lamp. The door shut behind them. As the light came to the room they saw a familiar tall blond figure in the middle of the room.

"Oh my god!" Rachel murmured. "Phoebe!!"

"Yeah, right." said as she turned. "Like you need glasses girly."

Rachel rubbed her eyes. Then she realized her mistake. She didn't take into consideration Phoebes twin sister Ursula. Of course she would be there.

"I'm sorry Urs." Rachel said.

"It's not my fault." Urs sniffed. Rachel immediately remembered why she didn't like her. Joey waved hi from the back of the group. Ursula acknowledged the jester with a smirk. He shrank back into the crowd.

"Mulder, Scully. Ursula is Phoebes identical twin." Rachel cleared up for them.

"Have you seen your sister?" Scully asked Ursula.

"Yeah, she looks like me." Ursula said. The agents decided that she wasn't going to be as big as a help as they had hoped.

There was a sudden knock at the door. Chandler opened it in time to catch a fainting Phoebe. He picked her up and set her on the couch. Phoebe was out cold moaning.

"We have to get her to a hospital!" Rachel exclaimed as she went to Phoebes side. Scully looked at Mulder who was walking around the room.

"I'm a doctor!" Scully said and opened her bag. "This is strange." She declared. "Anyone see Urs?" Joey asked them. Rachel looked around the room. Ursula had vanished.

Scully covered Phoebe with a blanket. After Chandler had carried Phoebe into her room, Scully gave her something for the pain. What puzzled her was what was causing it. When Phoebe was lying on the couch she repeatedly rubbed her nose. Scully briefly rubbed it with her forefinger. She felt something just beneath her skin.

"Mulder!"

Mulder went into the room. He sat down on the opposite side of the bed.

"What is it?"

"Feel the bridge of her nose." Scully instructed him. As he did she his eyebrows went up and down.

"Whatever this is we need to get it out." Mulder said. "And fast. It could be dangerous for her to have this in there." He got up and closed the door. "Is this something you can do here?"

"Just as long I'm not disturbed. This will not take long."

Scully used a local anesthesic on her nose and took a small scapel and cut a small line besides the object. Remembering to use care she gently pushed it out of the hiding place. Scully placed the small object in a glass jar and placed it beside Phoebe. She sewed up her nose with tiny stitches. The stitches were small so they would not draw attention. Mulder picked the jar up and examined it.

"They found one like this in the back of your neck." Mulder said.

Scully rubbed the back of her neck, briefly reminded of her own close encounter a year ago.

"I don't know what to say." Mulder said as he sat down. "Should we tell the others? I mean I think once that is removed, they can't take her again."

"Really?" Scully said quietly. "I don't think we'll ever know for sure."

When Phoebe woke up Scully told her about what really happened to her. Phoebe sat up in the bed as Scully let the others in the room. Rachel went to the side of the bed. Once she had noticed the bandage she looked at Scully. Scully then opened her bag and removed the vial with the object in it.

"What's with the bandage?" Rachel asked.

"Look at this." Scully handed her the vial. "I found this in the bridge of her nose." Rachel rose from her spot. She carefully fingered the vial in her hands. She walked over to the gang who had gathered around the window. "Do any of you know what this is?" She said turning to the gang,

No one really knew. Chandler stepped forward and took the vial from her hand. "It looks like a microchip." Chandler said as he gave the vial back to Scully. "The kind you use to track something."

"How do you know that?" Monica asked.

"I'm not as dumb as I look."

Satisfied with the answer, Monica sat down in a chair. Scully put the vial back in the case.

"Agent Mulder believes he knows what happened to you Phoebe." Scully said looking in Mulders direction. He read her signal and sat down on the bed next to Phoebe. He looked into her eyes.

"What do you remember about that night?" Mulder finally spoke. He made sure she understood what he was saying.

"Well." Phoebe said. She looked around the room. "I woke up. I needed a glass of milk to help me sleep. So I went back into the kitchen. When I got there I heard this weird humming sound."

"Was it like a droning sound?" Mulder asked. Scully rolled her eyes.

"No it was kind of like doon doon doon doon."

Mulder looked at Scully. "Okay, go on."

"I also remember there was a bright light. It was so bright, but yet it didn't hurt my eyes. It had a kind of weird warmth. Like it was telling me not to be afraid. The light became brighter. I could still see. Suddenly I saw my mother!"

Rachel gasped and covered her mouth. "You saw your mother?" "Yes. I said that." Phoebe rolled her eyes much like Scully did. "God."

"Please go on." Mulder urged.

"Anyway. At first I thought I was being abducted by a UFO. But it turned out to be completely opposite. You see my mom is not an alien. Despite what people said. She said everything was going to be okay. She touched my nose. I guess thats where that came from. Then some weird people took her away and put me back to sleep. Before I fell asleep I saw the ceiling of this place I was in. It wasn't my place and it certainly wasn't heaven."

"Do you remember where it was?"

"Yes, I was on a ship."

"But didn't you just get done telling us you were not abducted by aliens?"

"Yes. You have to pay attention." Phoebe looked like she was getting impatient. "They told me that the thing in my nose is like a calling card. Anytime they needed me, they would come and get me."

"That's not going to happen since we removed it from your nose." Scully explained pointing to her bag.

"Why?"

"Because whoever they were, didn't know diddle squat about human anatomy. The first time you would sneeze or inhale the object would have gone to you head and killed you. They were not coming back until they think you died from having the implant. But that won't happen now." Scully answered for her. She smiled reassuringly.

"That's nice." Phoebe said. "Wow."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because I am the first to be abducted by an alien." Phoebe said rubbing her nose. "No matter what my gram says."

Scully looked at Mulder and they ushered the gang out of the room.

"We love you Phoebe!" Rachel said and kissed her on the cheek.

"We're here for you." Joey said giving a thumbs up sign.

Scully closed the door.

They talked about her on the way downstairs.

"Give Phoebe a few days to recover from this experience." Mulder advised them. "If she comes to the coffee shop, let her stay."

"Yes. And by all means let her sing." Scully added. "From what I saw in there today, I think that would be a definite way for her to heal."

"Great." Chandler grumbled. "We can look forward to some great alien songs in the future."

They said their good-byes and got in the rental car. Rachel stood and waved till they were out of sight. Ross came and stood with her.

"Do you think they'll ever come back here?" Ross asked.

"If they're lucky they won't have to." Rachel said. "What else could happen to us?" Rachel turned to look at him.

He nodded, then put his arm around her. "Good point." Ross led Rachel to the car where everyone else waited for them to drive them back home.

The End
