Brianna woke up around noon time. She rose out of her rollaway bed and went to the window. It was a nice sunny California day. Like it always was. Only one difference, she was in the weirdest place she could ever think of.
It had been a day since her time travel adventure to the Monkees universe. She had later found out that they were a music group in the sixties from her sisters in time travel Chea and Karen. Even though Cheas room was heavily laden with Monkees paraphernalia, Brianna didn't know anything about them. It still didn't seem real although she could have died in fact a very real death in the ocean if she had not been saved by Davy.
Brianna found a pile of clothes on her bed. A nice sun dress with yellow flowers. There was a note from Chea.
"This oughta fit. I think I'm still growing, I'm outgrowing most of my stuff!"
Brianna picked it up. It looked nice though by her own stodgy fashion sentiments it looked like someone did some nice work with an old Martha Stewart bed sheet. She pulled it on and looked at herself in a full length mirror. It hung nicely on her although it felt almost half a size too large. She wasn't bout to quibble, however, all of her good clothes were at home.
Brianna walked out of the spare room. She looked around. No one was there.
"They must be at the guys place." She reasoned. She walked out the door to the beach and followed the stone pathway to the guys place. She quietly went in the door. She noticed they were rehearsing for a gig she had overheard them talking about earlier. From what she knew the man in the hat was Mike, Karen sat next to him while he strummed. They were obviously a couple. Chea was standing next to Micky, the same couple hood was visible from first glance. She happily played a tambourine
while he played the drums. Peter was at a small harpsichord like piano, and Davy played his maracas. The five of them seemed in so peaceful harmony, they worked together so well, that she suddenly felt like a sixth
wheel.
They were singing a song that sounded familiar to her. It was a nineties songs, she thought. Since the other girls were from her time, she didn't blame them. She heard a few more bars of the song before she could place it. It was "Waiting for a star to fall" by the one hit wonder group Boy Meets Girl. Brianna stood and listened to it as Chea and Micky shared vocal duties. Admittedly she had never heard them sing before today. At least not in person. She heard one song once in a while but it
never really made an impression on her. Karen seemed to be more of a sometime fan than Cheas definite fan.
"Great. Big fan, little fan, no fan. I guess I know where I fit in." Brianna mused to herself.
They finished the song. They milled for a second before Peter called out a song. "Randy scouse git?"
"Okay." Micky said. Chea sat next to him after giving Davy her tambourine, giving her voice a chance to rest.
"She's a wonderful lady
And she's mine all mine
And there doesn't seem a way
That she won't come and lose my mind.
It's too easy humming songs
To a girl in yellow dress
It's been a long time since the party
And the room is in a mess."
Suddenly Davy stopped playing the tambourine Chea had given him. He looked at Brianna. She could feel his eyes on her and she looked back. Instant connection! She could see the glow come back into her eyes. She could feel it in herself too. Micky tapped the struck Englishman lightly with a drum stick.
"Yoo hoo, ground control to major tom!" Micky cracked. Chea had introduced him to David Bowie the week before.
"Oh I'm sorry mates," Davy said still looking at Brianna who felt a smile creeping onto her face. God she looked so beautiful. "It's too hard to sing to a girl in a yellow dress, I guess." He thought.
"Why don't we take five? Our gig isn't till later tonight anyway." Mike said. He looked at Karen. She seemed deep in thought. "What?"
"Wha ohhh nothing." She smiled. "Really." She got up and walked out to the patio.
Chea and Micky quietly talked, Peter tuned his guitar.
Davy remained on the stage, still as a statue, still holding his instrument. Brianna got up from her seat and walked outside. Davy noisily put down the tambourine and followed her out.
A few feet out next to Peters hammock Mike looked at Karen.
"Whats wrong?" He asked. "You had the appearance of a girl with something on her mind."
"I do." Karen said.
"What?" He asked.
"It's weird but I get the feeling its not gonna end by Brianna accidentally coming here." Karen said. "What if those weird FBI agents know we have the second device now?"
"Its worth thinking about." Mike said. "Its only been a day. I mean who's even noticed yet, besides us, that someone else new is here. Mr. Babbitt, ever since we paid him for five months of rent, hasn't even been up here."
Speaking of landlords....meanwhile in the real world
The dirty landlord who took Brianna on her tour came up the stairs. He had given her the night to think about taking the apartment or not. Its been 24 hours, it was decision time. He knocked on the door. No one answered. He waited a couple of more minutes then got out his pass key. He opened the door. The tv was on, but the cable was out so there nothing but barely visible programming mixed with static. Briannas clothes were left right were she left them. All was quiet. There wasn't even a new
newspaper. The one from the day before was sprawled open to a the TV page, and a description of a movie she had hoped to see.
"God darn it, not again!!" The landlord cursed, only choicer words, then closed and locked the door. "If this keeps up, this apartment might become known as a black hole!"
1967
As the landlord discovered the empty apartment Micky and Chea were walking back to her place.
"We need to talk." Micky said.
"Oh no not that." Chea said.
"Not what?" Micky asked.
"Cause every guy I was ever with wanted to have the talk. We are great together, but wouldn't we even better off if we went back to being just friends. That kind of thing. I can't believe you're breaking up with me!"
"Chea!" Micky said then kissed her full on the lips. She let herself be pulled in by it. He pulled back from her. "Would I do THAT if I was thinking of calling it off?"
"Not unless you really wanted to leave on really good terms." Chea said. “I freaked.”
"Totally."
"I'm sorry."
"That's ok." Micky said with a smile. "Now, the thing is...and don't tell me no thing either cause I've experience the heres the thing talk more times
than I care to recall...we have never been on real date."
"A real date?" Chea asked.
"Anytime we went out it was with the others but we have never had any personal quiet time for just the two of us. And now that things have somewhat settled down with the new chick, I think now is the perfect time." Micky brought Chea inside the apartment. He led her over to the
table Karen had hidden the device. "We don't have to tell anyone, but I have a wild idea, and it will take this to do it."
"What’s your idea Mick?" Chea asked, her eyes full of curiosity.
"How would you like to visit your home turf for a while?" Micky asked with a flash of inspiration in his eyes.
Chea didn't answer but let a huge grin spread across her face.
Karen walked into the apartment with Peter.
"Heres those music sheets I got." Karen handed him a box.
"Thanks." Peter said. "These will really come in handy. Davys never been so inspired." He looked up. "I swore to god Mick and Chea were just in here."
"They probably off somewhere." Karen said. "Let them have their fun, they deserve it." Karen then saw the drawer where they device had made its new home was open. She shook her head. Peter left with his sheets.
"Nah, and I thought Cheas time tripping days were through." Karen said closing the drawer.
