Chart Commentary
TLC NO. 1... NO MORE. After an impressive 8 week run at the top, "No Scrubs" finally gives up the throne to boyband 'N Sync, whose "I Drive Myself Crazy" becomes their second chart topper after "Tearin' Up My Heart" ruled the chart for 2 weeks in 1998. Still, TLC has the second longest running single at no. 1 since this chart was created back in 1997. "No Scrubs" needed 5 more weeks to tie Janet's "Together Again" which was no. 1 for an amazing 13 weeks in 1997 and 1998.
GREATEST GAINERS. This week's greatest gainer is Ricky Martin with "Livin' La Vida Loca". The song climbs 9 spots into the top 20 and is a huge contender for the top spot in the coming weeks. And even though Shania Twain's "That Don't Impress Me Much" jumped 10 spots from no. 39 to no. 29, she'll have to settle with second place this week since Ricky's song gained more in over-all points. Third place goes to "Dizzy" by The Goo Goo Dolls, a song that should hit the top 20 next week. This is their third single on the chart after both "Iris" and "Slide" made it all the way into the top 3.
NEWCOMMERS. This week we have 2 new entries and 1 re-entry. "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer re-enters at no. 34 after an absence of 1 week on the charts, while "When I Close My Eyes" by Shanice and "Promises" by The Cranberries debut at no. 37 and no. 38 respectively.
For the week ending on May 1st, 1999.
