TOP 40 SINGLES CHART

2001 YEAR-END CHARTS...

I. TOP 40/POP

2001 was Jackson's year... If you're thinking about Michael's comeback, think again!. It was sister Janet who kicked some serious chart butt this year. After scoring a #1 hit with "Doesn't Really Matter" last year, Janet released in April her 8th album since 1982 titled "All For You". The first single, titled "All For You" as well, went on to spend nine weeks on top, the most for any single released this year. In the year-end chart, the track now gives Janet the distinction of having the #1 Top 40/Pop single of 2001. But besides that, she also placed "Someone To Call My Lover" at #7, a track that also reached #1 for four weeks in 2001. Thus, Janet is also the only artist with two singles in the top 10 of the year.

Top 40/Pop Single of the Year

Dido- "Thankyou"
Eve f/ Gwen Stefani- "Let Me Blow Ya Mind"
Janet- "All For You"
Alicia Keys- "Fallin'"
Jennifer Lopez f/ Ja Rule- "I'm Real (Remix)"

Artists of the year... But eventhough Janet accomplished amazing feats during 2001, there was a group that kept delivering hit after hit. Destiny's Child closed 2000 with the #1 hit "Independent Women Part I", a track that spent seven weeks on top, but that wasn't enough for Béyonce, Kelly and Michelle. In May, they released "Survivor", an album that has added so far, three more top 10 hits to their list. The title track, "Survivor", was a sure bet for #1 earlier this year, but was held at bay by "All For You" for what seemed an eternity. Still, "Bootylicious" seemed to do the trick and gave the girls yet another chart-topper during 2001, while "Emotion" closed the year for them by cracking the top 10. And although none of these tracks made the year-end top 10, these four smashes combined were big enough to give Destiny's Child the distinction of being the Top 40/Pop artist and Top 40/Pop duo or group of the year. In other categories, Usher takes the Top 40/Pop male artist of the year honor, and Janet wins Top 40/Pop female artist of the year.

II. R&B/SOUL

More Janet... Besides being the #1 Top 40/Pop single of the year, "All For You" also is the #1 R&B/Soul single of the year. The track spent nine weeks on top in 2001, and was followed closely by Jennifer Lopez' "I'm Real (Remix)", featuring Ja Rule, which spent eight weeks on top. J.Lo seemed to do a bit better than Janet on the R&B front though. Jennifer's other singles this year, "Love Don't Cost A Thing" and "Play" land at #10 and #32 respectively; while Janet, on the other hand, finishes at #24 with "Someone To Call My Lover (Remix)", featuring JD, and #28 with "Son Of A Gun (Remix)", featuring Missy Elliott, Carly Simon & P. Diddy.

Eve f/ Gwen Stefani- "Let Me Blow Ya Mind"
Janet- "All For You"
Alicia Keys- "Fallin'"
Jennifer Lopez f/ Ja Rule- "I'm Real (Remix)"
Usher- "U Remind Me"

And more Destiny's Child... Destiny's Child take both the R&B/Soul artist and R&B/Soul duo or group of the year honors thanks to hits like "Survivor" (which places at #12), "Bootylicious" (at #14), "Emotion" (at #25) and "Independent Women Part I" (at #33). Usher takes the R&B/Soul male artist of the year award, and Jennifer Lopez wins R&B/Soul female artist of the year.

IV. ROCK/ALTERNATIVE

Rockin' the charts... As always, rock was also present during 2001. There are usually two or three rock tracks every year that make a big impact, but somehow, the follow-ups to those tracks always flop. This year, those tracks are Train's "Drops Of Jupiter" and Lifehouse's "Hanging By A Moment", which place at #9 and #10 in the Top 40/Pop year-end chart, respectively. "Drops Of Jupiter" made it to #1 for a single week this year, but the follow-up, "Something More" didn't even crack the top 20; while Lifehouse made it big with "Hanging By A Moment" by peaking in the top 5, but then "Breathing" only made it to #28. Now we'll have to wait and see if Nickelback and The Calling can deliver strong follow-ups to their current hits during 2002, don't we?.

In a nut shell... All in all, the year 2001 was a good year. Music veterans returned... some shined in a big way (Madonna, U2 & Janet), others just didn't glitter (Jacko & Mariah Carey). Teen pop took a bit of a backseat... although "Celebrity" and "Britney" scored big first week sales, their respective initial singles failed to make a big impact. R&B dominated the airwaves... with hit songs like "Fallin'", "I'm Real" and "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" making a big impact at top 40, R&B is somehow dominating mainstream radio more than pop itself. So, what to expect in 2002?... surely more R&B crossing over to top 40 radio (Ja Rule, "Always On Time"), probably more teen pop with new albums by the Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera, hopefully the return of TLC to the music world, a new Madonna album, the re-introduction of Kylie Minogue to the Americas, and well... hopefully lots of cool surprises. Happy new year to everyone!.
