To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday
(Michael Pressman, USA 96)

It's Gillian's birthday, but she won't be able to attend the family gathering held at her husband's remote Nantucket Island home in her honor, at least not physically because Gillian died two years before in a boating accident. Husband David Lewis accepts the fact that she is gone, but is still not ready or able to let him go. His teenage daughter Rachel was also devastated as she, like her father, witnessed the death, but she is young and strives to build a new life. She is concerned that her father still takes nightly strolls upon the beach to converse with his late wife. On the fateful day, Gillian's sister Esther and her spouse Paul show up, not so much to celebrate, but to jolt the increasingly preoccupied David back from his fantasy world by threatening to take Rachel away from him in court. Chronicling the night and day of the gathering, this emotional family drama centers on the pain and healing that occurs between David, Rachel and Gillian.
