.........Lionized through out Empire, Retired on Capt.'s half-pay, Elspeth is leading the way through one social soirée after another. Encountered Tom Hughes in "The Green Man" pub & he invited me to play cricket at Lords. After gaming at a Sporting-Club with Speedicut, I met and became an intimate of Mrs. Marie Elizabeth Rosanna James, Anglo-Irish army wife {she liked to use silver hair brushes, painful performances}, with her was Baron Otto von Bismarck with the help of a patrolling Peeler Sergent we smartly cut-dead Otto & I escorted Mrs. James home.
.........Interview with the Duke of Wellington at Walmer House, went home to put on my best rig {damn not a descent looking uniform in the place}, later that afternoon arrived with Wellington in his carriage fore an audience with Victoria & Albert, Buckingham Palace {"little Vicky" was enamored}. Presented with the Queens Medal {the only one received, pink & green ribbon Albert must have picked it} then conversed with their Majesties, Mr. Macaulay {he can keep his Lays} & Wellington about my recent adventures during the campaign in Afghanistan & the different East Indian languages, having learned many while there.
.........On Holiday at Tom Perceval's in Leicestershire to see Nick Ward's fight & a little hunting, Speedicut's already in the thick of it. "Old Jack" Gully, Member of Parliament {once Champ ion of England} was their. Cut-dead by Bismarck while riding Steeplechase, forced off a jump. After Ward's fight had "old Jack" acquaint Bismarck to the Noble art of Pugilism via a sparing match twixt them {Otto says that there's no skill involved in it}, Otto losses a tooth & he promises Schlager lessons.
