I attended a variety of colleges and universities--even graduated from a couple. Spent a few years keeping the world safe for democracy. For 6 years, I lived about halfway between Saito-zaki and Shingu. That's near Fukuoka. That's in Kyushu. That's in Japan. That's over there near China. I learned to play Go; and before I left, I had worked up from a 17-stone handicap to a 13-stone handicap. My highest ever USCF chess rating was 1575. But I once won $100 at a tournament in Charlotte. I went 5-0. In every game, I got into a bad position. Each of my opponents elected to sacrifice a Piece for a quick winning attack and then failed to carry it out correctly. I still remember the tournament as

"Five Easy Pieces."
