beginning July 4, 1998
Edward paid Carly a visit, hoping to undermine her faith in Jason, and informed her that her hearing had been moved up to that week. When Carly became convinced her going home was a foregone conclusion, Jason tried to caution her but his words fell on deaf ears. Carly told Bobbie of her imminent homecoming, and rhapsodized about how she, Michael, and Jason would be "one happy family". When Bobbie tried to remind her daughter of the love Jason has for Robin, Carly made up a story about Jason reassuring her that Robin wouldn't stand in their way.
Meanwhile, Robin confessed to Brenda that she worried about Carly forcing Jason to choose between her and Michael. Brenda advised her to fight for Jason, but Robin pointed out that if she were the cause of his losing Michael, neither she nor Jason would be happy. Later, Jason told Robin of his visit with Carly and asked how she felt about Carly coming home. Robin told him, "As long as we're together, it's okay."
Carly then received a disturbing visit from Tony. She was more distraught when her doctor stated his doubt that she would be going home anytime soon. Desperate, Carly decided on a plan of action. When the orderly came in to check on her, he found Carly singing to her pillow, calling it "Michael".
Sonny said his goodbyes around Port Charles, including a stop at Luke's. On the docks, he saw Brenda waiting, but did not approach her. Just then, Jax arrived and they left, leaving Sonny alone with the memory of how happy Brenda was with him. Back at the penthouse, Sonny spent a few moments with Michael, think of the child he'd lost and talking about what it had been like that day, seeing Robin standing there, holding him. Jason, Robin, and Sonny said a tearful goodbye, and Sonny left Port Charles once more, as he'd left it-- alone.
Jason and Justus arrived at the mental hospital, court order in hand, to pick Carly up. The doctor refused, however, saying that Carly had suffered a breakdown. Bobbie paid her daughter a visit, and when Carly called her "Virginia" and reacted calmly to comments about Jason and Robin, Bobbie believed her to have lost touch with reality. Jason knew Carly was faking, but couldn't get in to see her to tell her to stop it. Justus confessed to Jason that with Carly's newest trick, they no longer had a way to get her out. Carly managed to fool Bobbie and three psychiatrists, and was therefore going to be sent to a mental facility for the criminally insane, unable to receive visitors for two months, unable to see Michael the whole time she was there. Jason, furious with Carly, let her know exactly what she'd done. In typical fashion, Carly wept and apologized, and though Jason informed her that sorry wouldn't get her out of this, he still promised to work towards her coming home some day. Carly left, and Jason went home to tell Michael why his mother wasn't coming home.
Jason went to the Quartermaine mansion and issued a threat to Edward and AJ: no more attempts to undermine Carly or steal Michael. When Edward and AJ argued, Jason told them he'd be taking his revenge on them in the way that would hurt them the worst: money, via the docks renovations, which he would bring to an expensive standstill. Alan, in a drug-induced stupor, interjected some babble about holding a family picnic to smooth out disagreements. Jason realised that Alan was stoned, and told Edward and AJ they had no business trying to bring Michael into a house that contains a junkie. After Jason left, Edward and AJ admitted that with Alan hooked on drugs, Jason had leverage against them and that they therefore needed to get Alan clean.
Bobbie paid a visit to the penthouse and learned from Jason that Carly had faked her whole insane episode. Bobbie was furious, but understood Carly's motives. When Robin came home and Jason went upstairs to check on Michael, Bobbie took the opportunity to have a frank discussion with her about taking care of the baby. Robin reassured her that she would take excellent care of Michael, but never try to replace Carly as his mother. Bobbie expressed her confidence in Robin, and how glad she was the Michael would have the chance to know someone with Robin's principles.
Jax and Brenda paid a visit to Robin at the penthouse, where Jax seemed bent on trying to convince Robin to leave Jason. Brenda added her voice to his concern for Robin's safety while she's with Jason, reminding her of Lily and her unborn child. Robin protested all of their points, and wanted to let the matter drop. Just then, however, Jason came home, furious at the way Robin was being blindsided, and told Jax to mind his own business. Jax then brought up the docks renovations and accused Jason of extortion. Jason responded by hinting at brother Jerry's illegal business practices. Brenda and Robin found themselves defending the two men to each other. Meanwhile, Emily arrived in tears over Alan's drug-induced state and tensions were eased. Brenda and Robin agreed not to let Jax and Jason come between them, and Brenda and Jax left. Robin later thanked Jason for backing down from Jax for her, and he promised not to let what he does hurt her ever again.
Brenda re-acquired L&B records and began making plans for the future. She asked Robin to come and work with her there, and Robin agreed. Robin also mentioned that she was thinking of moving into the penthouse, but still had to talk to Jason about it.
Jason received a visit from Monica, one that surprised him. Monica talked to him about his feelings for Michael, and how nothing could ever change them-- and then pointed out that those are the same feelings she has for Jason himself, no matter what. She told him that she wanted to love the man he is now, Jason Morgan, and that she knew Jason Quartermaine was gone. Touched by her words, Jason let her see Michael and told her she could come back anytime.
Robin was glad to hear of Monica's visit, and tried to bring up the possibility of her own move into the penthouse while telling him about her new job with L&B. Jason was happy for Robin, but didn't catch on to what she was getting at and instead talked about how he planned to keep his promise to make Michael's life just how it had been, before Carly shot Tony. Robin was troubled by this, clearly thinking that Michael's life then didn't include her. She told Jason how glad she was that he had Michael to keep him safe, and how she would give up anything to keep things that way. When Jason asked her what she meant by that, she dodged the question.
Robin attended Mac's wedding without Jason, knowing Mac would be displeased if he were to show up. Before she left the penthouse, though, she dropped another hint about splitting her time and things between the cottage and the penthouse-- another hint which Jason missed completely. On the way to the wedding, Robin ran into Nikolas, who agreed to be her escort. As the ceremony began, Mac surprised everyone by proposing to Felicia-- and Felicia surprised Mac by saying yes. Though Kevin and Lucy's wedding was called off, Mac and Felicia did finally wed.
Robin left the wedding for the penthouse, turning up on Jason's doorstep unexpectedly. Jason was thrilled to see her, and convinced Robin to spend the night, saying, "I wish you'd never leave". On several occasions, Robin almost talked to Jason about moving in, but backed down each time. Lucky came by to see Jason and asked him for a job; Jason told him he could wash the cars, for good pay, but promised Luke to keep his son out of the organization. Jason and Robin were surprised to learn that Lucky is living in their old boxcar, and reminisced briefly about going back to those days. The next morning, Robin left the penthouse to meet with Brenda regarding L&B Records, but the two friends were sidetracked when Brenda confessed that she might be pregnant. While calming her friend, Robin commented on how much she'd give to have Jason's baby, mentioning that it wasn't impossible, just risky.
Meanwhile, Detective Taggert stepped up his plans to bring Jason down by informing Monica of the hold he had over Alan, and demanding that she help him bring down Justus and Jason-- or else Alan would be arrested. Monica fought Taggert, claiming she would not betray her son, but Taggert insinuated that she would actually be doing Jason a favor by helping him get out of the organization. WHen Monica told Mac what Taggert was doing, Mac pretended to sympathize with her but actually told Taggert to proceed full speed ahead.
After saying a wistful goodnight over the phone one night soon after, Robin changed her mind and headed over to the penthouse. Once there, she told Jason that she wanted to move in. Jason told her he'd be thrilled to have her there, but was concerned that she would feel like Brenda, and that the penthouse was a prison. Robin told him she knew what she was getting into, and they agreed she would move in the next day. Robin then convinced Jason that they should move into Sonny's old room, telling Jason that it was time to accept that Sonny was never going to live there again. Jason, who never wanted to forget his time there with Sonny, agreed that the time had come for he and Robin to make it their home.
Mac, however, was not so understanding when Robin told him of her move. He accused her of having some sort of death wish, and warned Robin that as police commissioner, he would not hesitate to bring Jason down, if he could. Robin said she understood and left, obviously upset by Mac's reaction but resolute.
When Jason was called down to the police station to bail Mike Corbin out one morning, Robin volunteered to take Michael with her when she went to meet Nikolas for coffee (with Renaldo along, of course). Jason agreed, and brought Mike back to the penthouse. Jason promised Mike that he would always be there to help him out, and Mike apologized for holding Jason responsible for Sonny's actions. Bobbie arrived and expressed concern at Robin's having taken Michael out. Upon Robin and Michael's return, Jason brought out a letter from Carly and sat down with Robin to read it to Michael, as Mike and Bobbie watched-- with Bobbie spouting her usual concern for daughter Caroline's place in Jason's life.
Felicia stopped by the next day to invite Robin and Jason to dinner, in an attempt to make the peace. After some thought, Robin agreed to go and Jason agreed to go with her, though he remained skeptical of Mac ever accepting him. Just before they left the penthouse, Monica stopped by and probed Jason about how well prepared he'd be if Taggert was to come after him. Jason reassured her that he was beyond Taggert's reach.
Things did not go well at what Robin accurately predicted would be "the dinner from hell". Mac was stiff and rude, ordering Georgie and Maxie to stay in the house and away from windows. Felicia and Robin did their best to keep the conversation going, but Mac was a brick wall of silence. Finally, after the girls went upstairs, Mac laid into Robin and Jason about how unsafe the organization makes them, pleading with frist Robin to leave Jason and then with Jason to leave the mob. Jason kept his cool and said nothing, having promised Robin that he wouldn't fight with Mac. Robin stood up to her uncle, though, and she and Jason left on bad terms. After they left, Mac called Taggert and told him to step up their plan to entrap Jason. Meanwhile, back at the penthouse, Robin told Jason one of her favorite sayings: "A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are made for."
Brenda and Robin convinced Jason to book a new L&B client into Luke's Place. Jason then agreed to buy a motorcycle shop with Mike, who wanted to expand the Recovery Room into that space someday. After getting caught up in some bike repairs, Jason convinced Mike to keep the bike shop open until he decided to expand.
Mac came to see Robin on Stone's birthday, and they spent some time remembering him together. Robin told Mac how desperate and numb she had felt after Stone's death, and how Jason brought her back to life again. Mac agreed to disagree with her about her life with Jason, and to ease up on pressuring her. After leaving the penthouse, however, he encouraged Taggart to step up his investigation and lean harder on Monica.
Jason surprised Robin by remembering Stone's birthday and their two-year Montauk anniversary with a cake and candles. After making near-identical wishes for a long future together, they spoke of their past, and the moment each knew they loved the other. Jason then gave Robin a ring, as Stone had once done. Robin decided to take Stone's ring off (though she would always keep it to remember him by) and place Jason's ring on her left hand where it had been. When Emily stopped by the penthouse several days later (with Nikolas in tow), she mistakenly assumed that Robin and Jason were engaged, but Robin assured her that they weren't. Robin and Emily invited Nikolas to the L&B party at Luke's, and Nikolas agreed to meet them there. Meanwhile, Jason told Justus to go after Taggart, even if it meant Alan being convicted.
At Luke's, the new act was a no-show (due to Veronica's insane plotting) and Ned filled in to save the day, making the evening a big success for L&B. Luke took his leave of Jason, asking him to take care of the club and various friends. Luke also told Jason not to get Lucky involved in the organization, which, he confessed to Mike later, rubbed Jason the wrong way. Under Mike's questioning, Jason admitted that he hoped Michael wouldn't want to work for the organization when he was Lucky's age, because of how hard he found it to protect the people he loved. Finding Justus drunk, Jason had him escorted home. When Monica came by Justus' apartment, looking for dirt, she got more than she expected when he confessed to killing Damian Smith-- and on tape.
Later that evening, as the party ended, Mac took Robin aside and told her that he could see how happy Jason made her, and that he would try to be more accepting in the future. Pleased, Robin thanked him and got ready to leave with Jason. Emily stopped them, needing to talk to Jason for a moment, and Nikolas walked Robin to the car. Once there, Robin asked Nikolas to give Emily a ride home, and he readily agreed before kissing her hand and leaving. In a scene eerily remiscent of Lily's death, Robin walked to the limo, smiling and waving to Jason, who watched her adoringly. Just as she reached for the door handle, however, Jason suddenly bolted towards her, picking her up and throwing them both to the ground as the car exploded.
Robin and Jason survived the explosion unhurt, but Rinaldo died. After having Robin checked out at the hospital, Jason took her home and ran some preliminary plans by Benny. A scared and furious Mac went home to Felicia, admitting to her that despite the evening's near-catastrophe, there was still nothing he could do to change Robin's mind about Jason. The next day, he called Jason in for questioning and was furious when Jason refused to aid the police investigation. Infuriated, Mac informed Jason that the bomb was remote detonated-- meaning that whoever set it off watched Robin walk towards the car and then set the bomb off.
Justus arrived at the police station late and faced Jason's wrath for doing so. Jason questioned Justus' recent behavior, asking him if he had anything to do with the bombing. Though he believed Justus when he said no, Jason pointed out that Justus' personal problems are making hima liability. Justus offered to resign, but Jason told him that wouldn't be necessary as long as he got back in line, and Justus promised to do so. Later, Jason confessed his fears to Robin and told her that he would understand if she left him, blaming himself that she had almost died. Robin reassured him that she wasn't going anywhere, and tried to calm his fears, but Jason remained tense and continued his plans for revenge against Moreno.
Robin went down to the station to give her statement, accompanied by Nikolas. Leaving, they bumped into Moreno, who expressed his condolences to an unsympathetic Robin. Later, Robin admitted to Nikolas that she was afraid of Moreno, and what would happen between him and Jason.
Jason asked Robin if she and Michael would stay put in the penthouse until the situation with Moreno was resolved. Robin agreed, but expressed concern for Michael and his safety. Hesitatingle, she suggested that the baby would perhaps be better off with AJ. Jason didn't see her point of view, and the two argued until an irate Emily arrived with proof that Edward was planning on trying to get Michael again. Emily even offered to testify on Jason's behalf that Michael was better off in the penthouse with Jason, and that the mansion wasn't a good environment for anyone to grow up in. Robin said nothing, and assured Jason that she trusted him to take care of the situation.
Later, Monica stopped by and spoke to Justus about his drunken confession the other night. Justus thanked Monica for handling the situation so well, and for her silence. Monica, still debating whether to turn the tape over to Taggart or not, was embarrassed by his thanks. Robin and Emily decided to bring the park to Michael, since he couldn't go outside, and a game with signs and stuffed animals ensued, with Monica participating. Jason mentioned that Michael was trying to crawl, and Monica guessed that the baby probably just gave up trying and played with his toes instead. Wondering how Monica had got it right, Jason and Robin were startled to learn it was because AJ had done the same thing as a baby.
Alone with Michael, Jason explained to the baby that he might not be coming back. As Robin walked into the room, she was confronted with the sight of Jason loading his gun and getting ready to leave. Although a tearful Robin begged him to stay, Jason insisted that he had to take care of the situation in order for her and Michael to be safe, and left. After Jason was gone, Robin talked to baby Michael, telling him how much she wished she could've kept Jason from being involved in the organization. Just then, AJ stopped by to apologize for Edward's latest custody attempt, causing Robin to doubt whether AJ should be denied access to his own child-- especially if Jason were not to return. In the end, however, she decided to keep Jason's secret.
At Moreno's offices, Jason entered unseen and pointed a gun at Moreno's head, his expression cold and unyielding, full of fury. Moreno begged for his life, but Jason informed him that he wasn't there to kill him, but to offer him a job-- his own. Jason told Moreno that he wanted out of the organization, and he wanted Moreno's help. Moreno agreed to call a meeting and give Jason's plan his support.
Back at the penthouse, Robin was overjoyed at Jason's safe return. When he told her of his plan to quit the organization, she was at first concerned that she had unduly influenced his decision. Jason reassured her that she and Michael were his family, and that they came before business, and Robin was thrilled. Jason later met with Brenda and reassured her that Robin would soon be safe from harm. Not knowing the full details, Brenda was understandable dubious.
Having acquired the tape of Justus' confession, Taggart paid him a visit and demanded he turn over incriminating evidence on Jason. Unbeknownst to either of them, Jason had already cleared his files out of Justus' apartment. Justus offered Taggart something different instead-- incriminating evidence on the Jacks family. Although Taggart at first balked, he accepted the deal and gave Justus back the tape. Later, Justus confronted Jason about the missing files and was shocked and upset to learn that Jason was leaving the organization.
Robin and Jason discussed Carly's return, and Robin asked some questions about what Jason expected their lives to be like when Carly returned. Jason admitted that he hoped the three of them could work something out, but Robin reminded him of how unlikely that was. When she suggested that he and Carly share joint custody of Michael, Jason was unwilling to consider it, and a disappointed Robin agreed that they would have to find another way.
Robin was saddened to learn of Brenda's troubles, and the possibility that her best friend could have a fatal mental disorder. Strong as ever, Robin offered her support to Brenda and to Jax. Jason met with the men of his organization and informed them that he would be retiring. Most were unhappy with the news, but accepted it. Justus and Benny's support seemed to sway some of the other men, and Jason cut all ties with his former business. Bobbie, who stopped by to see Michael, was especially thrilled at the news, but no one was happier than Robin. She and Jason began to make plans for their future, and Jason decided that he would run the bike shop he'd purchased with Mike.
Brenda's car went off a cliff into the ocean, her body (and that of her mother, Veronica) was not found but the Coast Guard assured a devastated Jax that, from the height of the cliff and the condition the vehicle was found in, no one could have survived. As Jax mourned his loss, Robin and Jason made plans for the future-- plans that seemed trivial when Jax brought them the bad news. Robin responded with sorrow and anger at the world that could let such unfair things happen. Jason left to tell Sonny, and Robin went to stay with Uncle Mac, with Bobbie taking care of Michael. Upon returning, Jason told Mike that Sonny had sensed Brenda's death, but that he had promised not to do anything drastic to himself in response. The people of Port Charles gathered for Brenda's memorial service, each mourning her in their own way. Robin continued to suffer deeply from the unexpected loss, seeming almost numb at times.
Mac and Taggert went to Jason's penthouse to question him and Mac told Jason that Moreno was moving in on his territory. Mac then asked Jason how he would retaliate and asked Jason to let him get Robin and Michael out of the line of fire. An angry Robin entered and told Mac that Jason had left the organization. Mac sent Taggert out and he and Robin smoothed things over between them. Mac continued to feel dejected, however, about how his plan to bring down Jason had hurt Jax so deeply.
Robin and Jason continued their search for a new home, and were surprised to discover that Brenda's cottage was already available. Jason felt it would be a good place to live, but Robin worried about the sadness in living somewhere Brenda had so recently been. After some hard thinking, she decided that moving to the cottage would only make her feel closer to Brenda, and the decision to do it was made. Jason made arrangements with the realtor, while Robin said she wanted to clear it with Jax.
Jason stopped by the boxcar to tell Lucky about his retirement, and to offer him a new job at the bike shop. Later, Jason had an unpleasant confrontation with Justus regarding the material he's turned over which had implicated the Jacks family. Later, when Jax stumbled upon Jason and Robin in the cottage, he blasted Jason for having destroyed his family-- and was chagrined to discover that Jason hadn't done anything. Thinking of Brenda, Jax told Jason and Robin she would've wanted them to live in the cottage.
Jason reminisced with Michael about his past in the organization and how he had learned everything from Sonny. Later, he and Robin moved out of the penthouse and headed for Brenda's cottage. As they settled in, Jason helped a sad Robin pack up the rest of Brenda's things. Bobbie arrived, and expressed concern as to how Carly will fit into Jason's new life. Jason sidestepped the issue and told her they would discuss it when Carly got home. Later, Monica expressed hurt that Jason had allowed Bobbie to take care of Michael while he was out of town. Jason informed her that Michael would never step foot in the Quartermaine mansion again. When Alan tried to reconnect with Jason, he was thrown out of the cottage. Monica blamed Alan for ruining the uneasy balance she was working so hard to build with Jason.
Jason started working at the bike shop, offering Lucky a job and a place to live in the apartment above. Mike was thrilled with the news that Jason had left the organization, admitting that he'd tried and failed to find Sonny down in Rio. Robin tried to convince Jason to let the Quartermaines, especially Monica, into Michael's life, but Jason refused, telling her that Alan was still on drugs. Believing him but disturbed at the news, Robin insisted on calling AJ to let him know that Alan was still in trouble. Jason resented her involving him with the Quartermaines, but, at the same time, wouldn't tell Robin what to do and accepted her decision. As Robin left for class and AJ left to confront Alan, Jason received a call letting him know that Carly could receive visitors.
While Robin headed off to new Haven to clear up some registration issues for school, Jason went to Ferncliff to see Carly. Jason told her he had left the organization; Carly's typical response was to whine about how he wouldn't be able, now, to use illegal means to get her free. Jason, of course, promised to do everything in his power to get her out. Under pressure to help Carly maintain her crazy act, however, he did not tell her that he and Robin had moved out of the penthouse and into the cottage together, knowing her reaction was sure to be violent. Back at the bike shop, Mike expressed surprise that Jason empathized so strongly with Carly's situation.
When Letticia was unable to watch Michael, Jason and Robin found themselves in need of a babysitter, as Robin had class and Jason was scheduled to visit Carly. Robin was surprised that Jason expected her to watch the baby, and refused to skip her classes just so Jason could see Carly. The two argued over the situation, and Robin realized that despite everything she has done to hurt other people, Jason feels sorry for Carly. Robin left for class, and Jason arranged for Mike to watch his godson. When Robin returned from school, she found AJ there, and the two of them had a frank talk about what life with Carly back in town would be like. Robin expressed doubts that she would be left standing from the fallout of Carly's vindictiveness, and AJ couldn't say much to assuage her fears.
At Ferncliff, Carly reacted with rage when Jason gave her the news that he, Michael, and Robin were living together in Brenda's cottage. Dr. Evans walked in just as Jason was restraining Carly by the wrists from attacking him, and lied to cover for her. Moved by his actions and aware of the need for discretion, Carly calmed down. Later, after Jason was gone, she told the doctor that she knew Jason loved her, by his actions.
Back home in PC, Mac reminded Jason of Robin's birthday and asked for a permanent truce between the two of them, for Robin's sake. jason agreed, and Felicia told a still dubious Mac what a good thing he'd done. Jason described the Ferncliff visit to Robin, who was angry to hear that Jason had compromised himself and lied for Carly. Jason reassured Robin that Carly would not make his choices for him, and that she, Robin, was the one he loved. He then presented her with her birthday present, a book of fairy tales like the ones Brenda had told him about.
Bobbie asked Jason if she could visit Carly in his place, and he reluctantly agreed. While he was away picking up a spare bike part, Robin took over babysitting Michael from Mike. AJ arrived in a rainstorm, and he offered his friendship to Robin, saying he could imagine what she must be going through with Carly. Robin received a phone call from a neighbor at the cottage about the cellar flooding, and needed to rush home. She reluctantly agreed to let AJ watch Michael until she returned.
