In 1993, Julia set sail out of Port Charles, and Brenda accepted the gracious offer of Lila Quartermaine, for whom she worked as a personal assistant, to live with her difficult family. During this time, she began to fantasize about what it would be like to be with a dangerous, exciting man - to be with Sonny Corinthos!
As Brenda became more deeply involved with the rising mobster, she gained firsthand knowledge of what it's like to live on the edge by helping Sonny after he'd been shot breaking out Frank Smith from jail.
After Sonny and Brenda moved in together, she was convinced by Mac Scorpio to wear a wire, to prove that Sonny wasn't involved in illegal activities. Tipped off by Lily Rivera, Sonny found the wire and showed Brenda the door.
Although Brenda felt betrayed by Sonny, she couldn't help but be drawn to him. Even after he entered into a marriage of convenience with Lily, Brenda and Sonny couldn't stay away from one another. Finally, they agreed that he would leave Lily for Brenda. That's when Lily dropped her bombshell: She was pregnant!
On the rebound, Brenda became involved with Jax in 1996, and on a whim, took him to be her husband. At the same time, Lily was killed by a car bomb. As torn up as Sonny was, he was free to be with Brenda - but she wasn't free to be with him.
Eventually, Brenda's feelings for Jax deepened, and they planned to remarry in a lavish ceremony. Neither of them could have predicted the uninvited guest Sonny brought: Jax's presumed-deceased first wife, Miranda Jameson.
In 1997, as Brenda fought her feelings for Sonny, she also fought Jax's for Miranda. Then, while Brenda was trapped with Sonny in the catacombs beneath Port Charles, they yielded to the passion that they had suppressed for so long and made love. After being cleared in the murder of Dr. Pierce Dorman, Brenda accepted Sonny's marriage proposal.
