(sung by The Chorus of Americans)
Sung by: The Chorus of Americans
He left us
Left us all alone
He left us
We need Gotham's red phone
He left us
Left us here to die
Without him
What good am I?
He left us
No protector near
He left us
With nothing but our fear
He was defeated
How could it have happened?
What did he do?
Now we've lost our captain
We need a champion to fight for freedom!
We need a champion to fight for truth!
We need a champion to fight for the people!
We had a champion, but that sap is no more!
Why did you leave us?
Why did you leave us all alone?
You left us
Without Gotham's red phone
Red Skull is coming
Knocking at our doors
Red Skull is coming
But Cap is here, no more
Note: The original 2002 version has a few different stanzas/repeat stanzas than this final 2007 version. One stanza reflected that the American people knew that Cap had gone, but didn't know where or why. But in the final story, they know what's going on so this made no sense and had to be changed.
I don't have a date on my lyrics sheet, but I'm gonna guess I wrote this in Sept/Oct of 2002. Maybe November. This is the first song with lyrics I ever wrote, ever. I remember coming up with the chords while messing around on the guitar. I had only been playing for maybe 4-5 months, so everything was still so new. I knew a few chords from learning to play "Behind Blue Eyes". I played the chords and the lyrics started to form in my head. I realized that I had a song for a "Captain America" rock opera, a joke my friends and I had been kicking around for a few months. So I went to it, wrote it, recorded it the same night (if I remember right) and sent the mp3 to my friend Dan. His reaction was very positive and he encouraged me to write more. I wrote two more songs for Captain America at that time (Late 2002) and then I went on to write a few shitty non-Cap songs over the next 6-7 months before I started getting some relatively good stuff (which ended up on Ghost Cars.) Anyway, that's the story of "He Left Us" and the genesis of the project.
