(LONDON, April 17) By Roderick Mann
Now the cars and the boats have gone, and much of the porcelain is gone or going.
"We though of it before, as you know, but got cold feet at the last moment. But this time it's on. And we plan for Jamie (Granger's 19-year-old son) to be the best man."
This is a copy of a xeroxed article in the New York "World Telegram & Sun" sent to me by a Granger fan, Judith Carrington. The article is from Apr. 17, 1964.
Stewart Granger, nearing his 51st birthday, flew to Switzerland with a beautiful young Belgian girl, Caroline Lecerf.
She is 22 years old and a former Belgian beauty queen. And this week, I can reveal, she will become the third Mrs. Granger.
For more that four years, ever since the break-up of his marriage to Jean Simmons, Granger has been footloose, devoting himself to hedonistic pursuits, blowing his loot on Maserati cars, expensive Italian speedboats, and Meissen and Chelsea porcelain.
And having holidayed with him in his boat, driven in his magnificent Maseratis and admired his beautiful porcelain, I can only say it must have taken quite a girl to make him give it all up.
And quite a girl she is!
Happily, they passed through London the other day, so I hurried round to tender my good wishes.
"Well, darling," he said (everyone is darling to Mr. Granger), "we're finally going to do it."
"I was a bit worried about the age diffential, but Caroline isn't. She a very grownup 22, fortunately. And I like to kid myself I'm a young 50."
"The only thing that makes me wince a bit is that her mother is two years younger than me."
"All my chums adore her, of course--people like David Niven and Michael Wilding. Some of the wives gave us a pretty sour look, though. But that's to be expected I suppose."
"And we get on great together. She's got a filthy temper, just like me. And she can cook wonderfully, which suits me just fine."
