    TRAINING DAY
Very little is known at the time, except that Matt will be playing a cop, opposite Samuel L. Jackson.

    PLANET ICE
Cale is a 19-year old young man who has been given a treasure map that is the ultimate solution to the salvation of mankind.
Why you should see this movie: Tons of famous cartoon voices (Drew Barrymore for instance) and great graphics. CGI combined with cartoons.

    ALL THE PRETTY HORSES
John Grady Cole (Matt) is a drifter from Texas who seeks a better life in Mexico. He gets to Mexico where he falls into an ill-fated romance.

    THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY
Tom Ripley (Matt) is sent to find Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), a spoiled millionaire. Upon finding him however, Tom kills him and takes over his life, as well as his girlfriend Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow.)
Why you should see this movie:The character of Tom Ripley is a very difficult one to pull off, since he's a psychotic killer but sort of sympathetic at the same time. Matt received accolades all over for his brilliant protrayal of Tom Ripley and the film was quite successful. Both Matt and Jude Law are nominated for Golden Globes, Jude goes on to be nominated for an Oscar.

    DOGMA
Loki (Matt) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) are two angels that have been banished from heaven. They are on a mission to defy God, and reenter heaven. A distant relative of Christ, Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) is called up by the 13th Apostle (Chris Rock) to stop them before the two angels are entered back into heaven, and thereby cause the universe to cave in.
Why you should see this movie: Dogma made the top ten lists of many movie reviewers and with reason. Kevin Smith (the director and writer) manages to poke fun at the Catholic religion while being very supportive of it at the same time. Those who protested the film obviously didn't see it. It is funny and dramatic and Matt shines comically as a fallen angel. Ben is the starring angel here though, in his role as a rather cynical character.

    SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
This film takes place in World War II. Eight men are sent to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have already been killed in war. On their way to finding him, Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), Sergeant Horvath (Tom Sizemore), Private Reiben (Edward Burns), Private Jackson (Barry Pepper) and others deal with putting their lives at risk for one man.
Why you should see this movie:If you hadn't been listening to the media, then you probably don't know that this is most likely the greatest war movie ever made. The film just pulls you into the horror that is war with startling reality. Warning: if you can't stand the sight of someone bleeding, you should probably skip the opening 20-minute sequence.

    ROUNDERS
Mike McDermott (Matt) chose to reform his gambling life and go to law school. But with the return of his friend, Worm (Edward Norton), Mike must re-enter the high stakes poker world to help his friend pay off gambling debts.
Why you should see this movie: Although it wasn't wildly received at the box office, excellent performances from the cast make up for the lack of publicity.

    GOOD WILL HUNTING
Will Hunting (Matt) is a janitor who works at M.I.T, but ironically is the smartest one in the school. When his talents are discovered by Professer Lambeau (Stellan Skaarsgard), he is encouraged to study math. Will refuses at first, but a brush with the law shortly after gives him only two choices: go to counselling and work with the professor, or go to jail. He makes the choice to work with the professor, but manages to outwit every psychiatrist that is sent to work with him. Finally, Sean (Robin Williams) is paired up with Will. The two begin to develop a strong friendship and together they work through all of Will's childhood issues and problems. Also involved are Will's new found love, Skylar (Minnie Driver), and best friend, Chuckie (Ben.)
Why you should see this movie: Matt and Ben: Screenplay Oscar. Robin Williams: Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Minnie Driver: Nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Good Will Hunting: Nomination for Best Picture. And the list goes on...need I say more?

    CHASING AMY
Holden (Ben Affleck), a comic book author, falls in love with a lesbian, Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams.) He has to deal with his emotions, and also the strain it's putting on his best friend, Banky (Jason Lee.)
Why you should see this movie: Aside from a quick blink or you'll miss it part with Matt (he's one of the comic book executives), this hilarious film offers some very geniune looks at life and love in an original way.

    THE RAINMAKER
This is a film based on the John Grisham novel by the same name. In it, Matt plays Rudy Baylor, an idealistic young lawyer straight out of law school who is hired to work for a less than reputable firm. His first clients include an old lady who claims to be very rich and wants to re-write her will, and the Black family who wants to sue an insurance company, Great Benefit, for refusing payments on their son's cancer treatments. On the way through the twists and turns of uncovering Great Benefit's greedy plans, Rudy falls for a battered woman, Kelly (Claire Danes.) Other stars include: Danny DeVito (great performance), Jon Voight, Mickey Rourke, Virginia Madsen and Danny Glover.
Why you should see this movie: One of the performances that led to Matt's breakthrough in Hollywood. Also, a pretty good storyline. (It actually follows very well with the book.)

    COURAGE UNDER FIRE
Lt. Colonel Serling (Denzel Washington) is assigned to investigate Captain Karen Walden, a rescue pilot who died just before her crew was rescued, and award her the Medal of Honour. However, after interviewing several crew members including Monfriez (Lou Diamond Phillips) and Ilario (Matt), he gets conflicting stories on whether she deserved the medal or not. The truth is told in a series of flashbacks.
Why you should see this movie: It's an absolutely excellent war drama (and not gory for the light-stomached) and the acting, especially Matts', was fantastic. This is the movie where he lost the infamous 40 pounds and made himself severely sick as a result, but his performance is truly wonderful.

    GLORY DAZE
It's two days before graduation and Jack (Ben Affleck) is thinking about how to spend the rest of his life after college, since all of his friend's lives seem to be changing. Also starring in this is French Steward and Alyssa Milano.
Why you should see this movie:Quite honestly, I haven't seen this film yet, but Matt has a small role as a person named Edgar Pudwhacker. Other notable actors with small bit roles: Matthew McConaughey and Brendan Fraser. And of course, Ben is in it.

    GOOD OLD BOYS
A comedy-drama about a man named Hewey Calloway (Tommy Lee Jones, who directed and wrote the teleplay), a cowboy, torn between continuing with his footloose lifestyle in the American West or settle down with a woman.

    GERONIMO: AN AMERICAN LEGEND
Geronimo is the leader of the Apache rebellion against their forced settlement on a United States Government approved reservation. They manage to evade capture, and the group also makes allies with two American soldiers-Lt. Charles Gatewood (Jason Patric) and Lt. Britton Davis (Matt.)
Why you should see this movie: This was the reason why Matt dropped out of Harvard-the film was supposed to be a huge sucess. Unfortunately it wasn't, but the film still deserves credit for it's stunning visuals.

    SCHOOL TIES
A film that deals with the issue of anti-Semitism. Brendan Fraser is David Green, a Jewish boy who gets accepted into a very prestigious prep school. He meets a lot of new friends, including his roommate Chris (Chris O'Donnell), Charlie (Matt), and also Chesty Smith (Ben.) At first David tries to conceal the fact that he's Jewish, but the news eventually gets out and those who were once his friends are now against him.
Why you should see this movie:Yes, I suppose you've all heard about the shower scenes-but that isn't the reason you should see it. Matt shows his range as an actor by playing a mean, racist character. You actually almost hate him at the end for what he does.

    RISING SON
Charlie Robinson (Matt) is the son of Gus (Brian Dennehy). Charlie drops out of medical school, to the severe disapproval of his father.

    MYSTIC PIZZA
The film revolves around the lives and loves of three waitresses at Mystic Pizza, Daisy, Kat and Jojo (Julia Roberts, Annabette Gish and Lili Taylor.)
Why you should see this movie: his is Matt's very first big screen appearance. His dazzling moment: "Hey Ma, do you want my green stuff?"
