DAVID ARQUETTE

David Arquette (yes, one of those Arquettes) breaks into the limelight, it'll be kicking and screaming. The soft-spoken 25-year-old, who plays the lovably inept Deputy Dewey in Scream, would rather shoot pool with pals in his Hollywood Hills digs than schmooze at Industry parties.

But with Tinseltown keeping him busier and busier, it looks like Rosanna and Patricia's little brother won't have much time for what he really wants to do--find the right woman.

"I'm past the stage where I'm sleeping around for no reason," Arquette says over a cigarette, before winging off to the Sundance Film Festival, where his latest film, Dream with the Fishes, played to packed houses. "I'm a hopeless romantic. I want to fall in love and be with a woman forever. It's pretty hopeless."

Hopeless? What about his dalliance with Scream-er Courteney Cox? "Well, I am hopelessly romantic about her, but nothing ever happened." Okay, then what about Ellen Barkin, his costar in Wild Bill? "That's gossip," he says. "You do a movie with someone, and you hang out with 'em, and people say you're going out." (There was also a "mind-boggling" kiss with Elliot Gould in johns, but Arquette says there's nothing between them, either.)

What's next for the lovelorn actor? He's currently filming RPM ("a European action movie"); after that, he'll play a priest in Showtime's The Hunger Anthology. And negotiations are underway for Heart of Hearts, starring Minnie Driver.

Hmmm, may be time to crank up that rumor mill again.
