This was a great year for date movies, even for the kind that guys might be willing to go see. This summer alone there were three high quality movies (Never Been Kissed, Notting Hill, and Runaway Bride, released in that order) that you could take your date to, and not have to pretend to laugh... because you would actually be laughing. But of all of these movies, there was one that stood way above the rest. Notting Hill was not only terribly romantic (which wins you lots of points), but incredibly funny.
With the help of the charisma of Julia Roberts and the foppish Brittish foolishness of Hugh Grant, this movie was bound for greatness before you get to the hilarious supporting cast. Not only do Roberts and Grant turn in good performaces and a great on-screen chemistry, but the supporting characters like Spike (played by Rhys Ifans) make this one of the funniest date movies I have ever seen.
Congratulations to Notting Hill, the Winner of the 2000 "Mikey" Award for Best Date Movie
