Usually, the Best Picture catagorie are the "artsy" films that make you think and fill you with emotion. Even I put the emotional films up a little higher than just your basic action or comedy flick. But this year I saw a lot of different types of movies, and there wasn't a group of those emotional movies that jumped out at me... so, my list of Best Picture nominees are a very diversified group that may make you wonder how they could all be on the same list. Well, they may not be similar, but they are all really good movies. So here we go.

The 2000 Nominees for Best Motion Picture are...

American Beauty, ©1999 Dreamworks SKG
American Beauty

The story of a normal man living in suburbia with a stupid life and a family that thinks he is a complete loser. Sounds like a great idea for a movie doesn't it. Well it is. With great characters, a great story, and some great acting put in by the whole cast (especially Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning), American Beauty was a shoe in for the nomination from the first second the credits started to role.

The Green Mile

I'm betting it is pretty hard to make a prison movie that just about everyone will like. Not only do you have to make convicts and criminals look like good guys, but you have to romanticize a jail cell. And, if you manage to do that, you are going to be tested (and usually failed) against some "classic" prison movies like The Birdman of Alcatraz and The Shawshank Redemption... well, you can add The Green Mile to that list as (once again) Tom Hanks puts in a wonderful performance in another movie with a great story. That, and Michael Clarke Duncan puts in a suprising performance as the big and lovable inmate, Jon Coughy to bring everything together.

The Matrix, ©1999 Paramount
The Matrix

Let me just start off by saying, I don't like Keanu Reeves. But, this movie was so incredible that they could have had Dopey the dwarf (you know, from Snow White) in the same role and it would still be the coolest sci-fi/action movie ever made. The Matrix has a killer story, awesome action sequences, and yes even good acting (even by Keanu) that still makes me want to see it over and over again.

Notting Hill, © 1999,
Notting Hill

This is the second year in a row that a romantic comedy is being nomnated for the "Mikey" Award for Best Picture... and this is a genre that usually doesn't get a lot of award recognition.&nbap;&nbap; However, like Shakespeare in Love last year, Notting Hill captures the audience with a cute (yes I said it, cute) story, good acting and lots of laughs.&nbap;&nbap; Both Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts give good performances with a lot of one screen chemistry.

The Sixth Sense, © 1999 Buena Vista Pictures
The Sixth Sense

What do you get when you mix Bruce Willis, a little kid who can see ghosts, and a great mystery/suspense toghether... the recipe for a "Mikey" Nomination (OK, I know it is cheesy and cliched... so what?). Although I actually figured out the "big mystery" long before it was revealed, I still thought this was a pretty cool movie. Bruce Willis did a good job, and Haley Joel Osment (the little kid) was suprisingly good.
