Best Supporting Actress
Just like last year, I am struggling to come up with nominees in all of my acting catagories... but especially in the supporting actress catagory. In fact I am in so much trouble coming up with nominees that both (yes that's right, there are only two) are not only young actresses with little dramatic experience, but they are both from the same movie. While two people from the same movie is not history making for the "Mikey" (both Morgan Freeman and Anthony Hopkins were nominated for Amistad in 1998), it is somewhat historical in that the only nominees are from the same movie. Anyway, if you think of any actresses that I am being an idiot for missing, please e-mail me and tell how stupid I am being (just don't be too mean about, my ego bruises easily).
The 2000 Nominees for Best Actress in a Supporting Role are...

Thora Birch has actually been around for awhile (she was in the Disney film Hocus Pocus in 1993 and the first movie my girlfriend and I went to, Now and Then, in 1995)... but this is definitely her biggest role so far as the daughter in a suburban family on the verge of dysfunction. She played the teenaged angst (don't you just love that word) extremely well... she had the hating her parents and akwardness around boys down very well.

As new as Thora Birch seemed, Mena Suvari really seemed to come out of nowhere with two huge hits in 1999, American Pie and American Beauty (not to mention she has the cool name of Mena). She also seemed to solidify her acting future as the overconfident on the outside, but completely insecure on the inside teenage beauty queen. Both of these characters reminded me so much of girls I knew in high school it was scarey, and it is largely due to their performances.
