It may seem to some of you that I am giving a little too much praise to American Beauty... that I either just don't have enough imagination to come up with a decent list of nominees or winners, or that I am just copying the Oscars. But for once the Oscar's got it right... and for once I happen to agree with them. This is a great movie and it is mostly thanks to the acting.
Thora Birch may be young, and most of her movie experience before this has been in small child roles (Hocus Pocus and Now and Then come to mind) and this was her first chance to show off her "acting chops." And she did a very good job as the "typical" teenager with the weird parents and the angst-ridden demeanor, right down to the black clothing and expressionless face. I was quite impressed.
