My three favorite female characters other than the Darling spitfire, Scarlett are Melanie and Mammy and Belle, all for very different reasons, of course.
Melanie was such a kind and dear woman, she knew no enemies, and she dearly loved all of her family and freinds to the point that when "the Embrace" occured between Ashley and Scarlett, she simply could not concieve that anything untoward had ever occurred betwixt the two.
Melanie was a wonderful and devoted wife and mother, and she was a very nurturing person. That we all should have a friend as kind and humble and loving as her would indeed be a blessing. Mammy....Well, there is another little spitfire! mammy tolerated none of Scarlett's shenanigans, but she never allowed herself to leave her station as a houseservant. She would never chastise Scarlett in the open of other family, but yet, she was always on the level with the daring Scarlett. My favorite scene with Mammy is when Melanie arrives to comfort "Captain Butler" after the death of his beloved Bonnie. All of us can feel her heart opening up to God as she tells Melanie of the goingson in the home. All of us silently pray that her prayer will be answered when she asks that Melanie can reach Captain Butler's heart.
Belle Watling.....ahhh Belle!!!!! Quite the spunky one, and she treats Melanie with such a kindness, and refers to her as a lady in the carriage. I love it when she pulls the powder puff from her purse in the carriage and "dusts" her cleavage as she speaks to "Miss Wilkes" and I personally assume that the boy that she refers to as her son in New Orleans away at school is a child that has a father by the name of Rhett Butler. Belle is great because she really does love Rhett, but as she tell him, he is ate up with Scarlett, and so some of may secretly wonder what ifs' over the romance and friendship of Rhett and Belle. I know I do.
When people ask me do i collect gone with the wind memoribilia, I just have to say yes but it's a little more intense than that. I am a true blue, die hard collector. I have over 3000 items in my room. Most people always say to me that I am obsessed, but it's my whole life--it always has been. I remember in 7th grade when I first sat down and read GWTW, I couldn't put it down, I took it to the bathroom, to dinner, bathtub, etc. I didnt even wash my hair for 2 weeks just to get it read. When i was done after 5 days I just sat down and thought about all that I had read. The book had completly touched me in no way that any had done before. I felt that Margaret Mitchell had just reached out of the grave and had touched my life forever. If I'm having a bad day all I have to do is go sit in my room with all my collectables and it cheers me up. Gone with the Wind is not just a movie or a book to me. It's what every man and woman in the world wants; the chance to be loved with every thing that is in them. When people tell me that its just a book or movie all i do is just laugh and say oh but your wrong--it's life.

I am sure that everyone has wondered about the ending of GWTW. Rhett may have left in the end but I have a strong belief that Margrett Mitchell wanted her readers to form their own endings. In my ending, I always imagine that Rhett walks in the mist and unknownly, walks apon a train track and gets run over. This is my way of adding comic relief to the very sad ending. I read in an article somewhere that Margrett Mitchel was going to write a sequel to GWTW but reclined because she was afraid that she could never top its success. She was to devoted to her fans to let them down. Although some people like the way GWTW ended and wished that Alexandria Ripley would have left perfection alone. What makes GWTW unique is that the main character doesnt get her way in the end (unlike most storys). This sad and bitter twist is what myself and most other people love most of all.
