This device is a very old invention. In former Egypt and
Babylon it was used for torture but also for a cruel capital punishment.
In Europe the rack was a very important part in every torture - chamber.
As late as to the 18th century it was regularly used to gain confessions
from the accused. It appears that even today some countries outside of
Europe are using this device.
