Facts, Fiction, and Cameos

Scream

The origional title of Scream was Scary Movie.

There wasn't really a voice changer box. The voice was an actor and was actually called in to Drew and Neve. Also, Wes would not let Drew meet the actor becasue he wanted her to be afraid. And the funny thing about the phone calls is, since they were using a cell phone, the police in the town kept picking the phone calls. They actually called to find out if someone was really in danger.

Ghostface's mask and costume are similar to the one in the movie Smalltown Massacre, and also to the painting of The Scream.

The opening scene in the movie was much like When A Stranger Calls.

Casey has to answer questions about Friday The 13th, Halloween, and talks about A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Wes Craven was going to take out the line about all the other Elm Street movies sucking, because he didn't want to sound consided, but then Kevin Williamson reminded him that A New Nightmarecounted as one of the sequels that sucked.

In the opening scene, Drew was able to continue crying and acting frantic even after several takes because of Wes Craven's great directing. Actually, Drew is a major animal fanatic and a few days before the shoot she had read about some jerk who intentionally lit a cat on fire, so throughout the takes, Wes continuously reminded her of that.

Billy's last name is Loomis, a tribute to Dr. Sam Loomis from Halloween.

In the scene where Dewey is talking the Sheriff Burke, we see the sheriff smoking. Joseph Whipp, who played the sheriff, had quit smoking, so as a joke, everytime he took a drag from his cigarette, they made David Arquette lick his ice-cream cone.

When we see Casey hanging from the tree it is NOT really Drew Barrymore. It is definately a dummy.

The actor who played Sheriff Burke was also in A Nightmare On Elm Street as one of the cops outside of Glen's house who was keeping an eye on Nancy.

Linda Blair, who played Regan in The Exorcist, and Exorcist 2: The Heretic, has a small cameo as a reporter. You can see her twice in the movie. The first time is the morning after Casey is killed, when Sid first gets to school. Linda is standing up against a tree wearing an orange suit and discussing drugs in high schools. The second time is the next day when Sid gets to school with Dewey and Tatum, and is acausted by a reporter saying "people have a right to know."

Wes Craven can be seen as janitor Fred, who is wearing a red and green sweater and an old brown fedora.

When Billy crawls through Sid's window, it kind of reminds you of the scene where Glen climbs to Nancy's window in A Nightmare On Elm Street.

The song Don't Fear The Reaper by Gus, is a remake of The Blue Oyster Cult. The origional version of the song is in both Halloween and Stephen King's The Stand.

The shefiff's shoes are nothing like Ghostfaces'!!! Lots of people think that they show the sheriff's shoe stomping on the cigarette to show that the shoes are the same, but his shoes are low top police issue. Ghostface is wearing shoes more similar to combat boots or DocMartin's.

Casey's father tells his wife to "drive down to the Mackenzie's" to get help. In Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis tells the kids to go to the Mackenzies.

Tatum states that Sid sounds like "some sort of Wes Carpenter flick". Wes Craven - John Carpenter. Get it?

Stu is killed by a TV falling on his head. At the time the TV drops, we see Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween holding a knife. So, you could say that Jamie Lee killed Stu.

Also, a girl in A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors had her head slammed into a TV.

In the video store where Randy works, you can see a poster of Jamie Lee Curtis.

The scene where Billy hits Stu in the head with the phone was not in the script. Apparently, the fake blood was either too sticky, or too slippery and the lost his grip. The phone was supposed to hit the table, but it was funny and Matt came up with a great line, so they kept it.

Most of Stu's lines at the end of the film were not in the script. He just felt like adding a bit of his own humor. "I've always had a thing for ya Sid", "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me", and "You hit me with the phone, dick" were all his. And of course, Neve came up with the response to Stu by saying "In you dreams". Which could also be yet another Elm Street reference.

The killer makes one final appearance for a couple seconds just before the credits role, but when the film was re-released in the theatres (it did leave for about a month but was back by popular demand) the scene was gone. However, it was reinstalled in the video release.

The 3 collector box versions of the video release are also kind of a "director's cut". There are several scenes which are different.
#1: When Casey is on the phone the killer says "Jason's mother is the origional killer..", but in this copy he says "Jason's mother is the iller". Somebody needs to learn how to edit better.
#2: When we see Casey hanging from the tree, we get the father running towards her point of view rather than the camera rushing up to her really fast.
#3: You can actually see Steve's guts fall in his lap and on the floor.
#4: You get about 2 seconds more of Tatum's head being crushed.
#5: When Stu and Billy are stabbing eachother, you get to see Stu get stabbed every time, instead of just once.

15 horror movies were mentioned durring the film.
The Howling - Terror Train - Halloween - Terror Train - The Fog - Carrie - Friday The 13th - The Town That Dreaded Sundown - The Exorcist - A Nightmare On Elm Street - The Silence Of The Lambs - Prom Night - Psycho - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The Evil Dead - Candyman - and Hellraiser.

Scream 2

Kevin Williamson has a cameo in Scream 2. He can be seen on TV interviewing Cotton Weary on an episode of "Current Edition".

Wes Craven plays a doctor in the hospital where Derek is taken after his attack.

Matthew Lillard can be seen in the background of the sorrority party when Lois and Murphy are talking to Hallie and Sid outside, just before Mickey tells Randy that Empire was better than Star Wars (which by the way, I disagree with. I am a trilogy junkie, but Yoda is one boring dude). Now, Matt just happened to show up on the set and they decided to throw him in, so they say that there is no tie in. However, Matt has said that he will be playing Stu's twin brother in Scream 3, so who knows.

When Hallie is looking in her closet you can see a red and green sweater hanging on the door.

When the killer asks Randy what his favorite scary movie is, he replies "Showgirls, absolutely frightening."

CiCi discusses Party Of Five (which Neve Campbell stars in) when she's on the phone with her friend.

CiCi is watching Nosferatu when the killer calls her.

CiCi's friend imitates Jason's infamous "chi-chi-chi-hah-hah-hah" while on the phone.

The show Friends is sort of made reference to twice in the film. Once when they're talking about nude pics of Jennifer Aniston on the web, and David Schwimmer playing Dewey in STAB.

David Arquette's real life father plays the chief of police.
