Rumors spread about Maureen being a tramp after Cotton claimed that he was seduced by her. Sidney blames Gail Weathers for these rumors, but the rumors were around far before Maureen's murder. With Sidney's father away on buisness all the time, would it be so hard to believe that Maureen was having affairs? It's not that inconceivable. But if Cotton didn't kill her, who did? And why was his jacket covered in blood, found next to him when he was arrested? It's possible that someone else killed her, but why would anyone go through all that trouble to frame Cotton for Maureen's death? Seems a little far fetched to me.
However, if she was sleeping around, it is possible that Mr. Prescott found out, and killed her in a rage of jealousy. He could have found Cotton's jacket and framed him for the crime.
