In 1831, Charles Adare travels to Australia to meet her cousin Henrietta;
her husband, Sam has been in prison accused for her wife's brother
murder and now, free again, he has become rich.
Charles realizes that the girl is not fine: she is an alcoholic and seems to
be on the verge of madness, she lives under his husband and house-keeper
Milly's power.
The man tryes to drive the woman to rebel; Sam gets angry and attacks
Charles; Henrietta confesses she was the killer of her brother who had a sexual
relationship with Sam.
Sam goes out of his head and strikes Charles; the man has now to decide what
to do: he can impeach Sam or let the things as they are and go away.
Charles decides to leave, he only impeaches Milly: she is in love with her master
and she is slowly killing Henrietta.

This film is a common melodrama, but it is made extraordinary by Ingrid
Bergman's presence.
