Rich Maxim de Winter, still troubled by the death of his wife Rebecca, falls
in love with a shy ladies' companion. They get married and start living in
Manderly.
Lady de Winter discovers that Rebecca still has a big hold on everyone
in the house, particularly on Mrs. Denvers, the housekeeper, who begins
torturing the young wife psychologically.
Lady de Winter becomes more afraid every day and is obsessed because
Mrs. Denvers is trying to drive her to madness.
When Rebecca's body is brought out from the sea, Maxim is accused of her
murder.
During the trial they find out that Rebecca committed suicide because she got
very ill.
The housekeeper is crazy: she blows up the house and dies inside.

"Rebecca" is Hitchcock's first American movie. It is a dark drama after which
Joan Fontaine became a star.
