Eyes Part 10
"Wow, it's perfect." Cassy stood in the middle of the living room of the
perspective house a couple days later.
"Yes, it is." Tom smiled as he watched her face light up with joy.
"Let's go check out the rest of the house, starting with the master
bedroom." He took her hand and the two of them walked down the hall.
The room was larger than they expected. It had huge bay windows and a
fireplace. There was also a small room connected that could be used as an
office.
Tom pictured long mornings with his wife in bed and his child climbing in
between them to sleep. "You know Cass, I could see this becoming my
favorite room in the house."
She kissed him. "I'll just bet you could. Let's go check out the other
rooms."
"Okay, but promise me we'll come back to this one."
"Promise."
The other two bedrooms were the same size. One faced the ocean and the
other faced the street. They went back to the master bedroom and stepped
out onto the balcony. They stood there holding hands and smiling.
"Let's go make an offer."
What neither one of them saw was a man on the beach taking pictures of
them.
Tom heard the door open and looked to see who was interrupting his class.
Cassy stood in the doorway and gave a small wave. Tom placed the piece of
chalk down and followed Cassy into the hall.
"You are about the last person I expected to see come through that door."
"Is that good or bad?"
He pulled her into his arms. "Good for me, but bad for the young
men in there. I recognize the look of lust in their eyes. And that dress
you're wearing doesn't help."
She smiled. "This is my 'Let's celebrate' dress."
"Celebrate? What are we celebrating?"
"Two things. Number one, I went to see Dr. Buchanan today and he examined
me and said that I look just fine and I can resume all activities."
"All activities?"
"All activities."
His smile matched hers. "That is worth a celebration. What's the other
thing?"
"Our offer on the house was accepted today."
"Really? That's great. Now all we have to do is find a buyer on your
place."
"Already done. Martha, from the realtor's office, called and said she
has an offer for my house."
"This definitely calls for a celebration. I'll pick you up at 7:00. Oh and
Cass?"
"Yeah?"
"Wear that dress."
Tom opened the door to the classroom.
"Hey, Sergeant, who was the babe?"
That comment was followed by several more. For the first time, Tom was
relieved that there were no women in this class. 'Sexual
harassment' was not a phrase he wanted to deal with.
"Gentlemen, please settle down. That was Sergeant Cassandra St. John of
Homicide. And calling her a babe is not the best way to get on her good
side. In fact the last rookie to call her that ended up spending six months
as a crossing guard."
"Is she married?" came a question from the back of the room.
"She's unavailable, Turner. Now let's proceed..."
"I bet the guy has nothing on me. I bet what she wants is a real man."
Tom sighed. He knew from the first day that John Turner was going to be
difficult.
"Turner, that's enough. Talk like that is unacceptable. Being a police
officer means protecting the rights of people and when you insult women,
including my fiancee, you are treading in very dangerous waters with me and
the entire police department. You have the potential to be a very good
cop, but you are going to have to change your attitude. Do you
understand?"
Turner was embarrassed. "Yes."
"Good. Then let's continue."
Turner looked down at his book. He had better make things right with
Sergeant Ryan. He couldn't let one bad moment affect his entire career.
