Part 16
Cassy closed the file cabinet and returned to her desk, file in hand. She
was surprised to see Tom sitting in her chair.
"Hi. What are you doing here?"
"Waiting on you. Did you forget about your appointment?"
"Of course not." She glanced down at her watch. "I just didn't realize it
was that time. Did you get someone to cover your classes?"
"I didn't have to. They are running obstacle courses all day."
"Ah," Cassy smiled. "I remember it well."
"How is your first day going so far?"
"It could be worse. Right now Harry has me pulling all open case files for
a meeting with the Mayor this afternoon."
"Then I am right on time. Are you ready to go?"
"And where do you think you're taking her, Ryan?" Harry took the file from
Cassy's hand and began to skim it.
"I have a doctor's appointment today, Harry. I mentioned it to you last
night at dinner and again first thing this morning."
Harry looked up. "Oh yeah. Well then, be gone. I assume you two are
returning."
Cassy grabbed her purse. "Of course we are. I plan to have all those files
ready for you in time for your meeting."
"Great. Then what are you two still doing here?"
"We're not." Tom grabbed Cassy's hand and headed towards the door.
"Would you please stop pacing. You're making me nervous."
Tom stopped walking and looked down at Cassy, who was lying on her back
wearing only a paper gown. "I can't help it. Doctors always make me
nervous."
"Sweetie, she's not here to see you."
"I know that. I just can't help it. This is my very first time being in
this situation. I ..."
The conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Dr. Shelia Sanchez.
"Hello Cassandra. How are we feeling today?"
"Terrific, Doctor."
"That's great. This may be cold at first." She applied the gel to Cassy's
stomach and within seconds the baby's heartbeat could be heard.
Tom was speechless. "Is that it? Is that the baby?"
"It certainly is, Mr. Ryan. Would you like to see a picture of your baby?"
A big smile covered Tom's face. "Absolutely."
Tom stared at the picture while Cassy drove back to the precinct.
"I can't believe this is our baby. I can see the head and the arms and the
legs." He glanced over at her. "Why wouldn't you let her tell us the sex of
the baby?"
"Because we want to be surprised."
"I wouldn't have mind knowing."
Cassy turned into the precinct driveway. "There is no way that you are
going to know the sex of this baby without me. I want us to find out
together and that will be in five months."
"That's a long time to wait."
Cassy locked the car door and joined Tom. "I'm sure we can find a way to
occupy the time until then. What do you think?"
He smiled down at her. "I'm thinking of ways right now."
"Me too. We will start with ideas for the nursery."
