Part 8

"Christ, Thomas, you look horrible."

Tom looked up from his desk and saw Harry looking down at him.

"Gee, thanks Harry."

Harry handed him a cup of coffee and sat down. "Did something happen during
Cassy's first night home?"

"You could say that. After dinner she started hurting. She refuses to take
anything because of the baby. She was in so much pain, Harry, and it was
killing me. I had hoped to have her settled in bed early so I could go home
and get the first decent night's sleep in days. But by midnight I knew that
was not going to happen."

Harry nodded sympathetically.

Tom continued. "I finally called her doctor and he suggested taking a half
of pain pill, but still Cassy refused. By two o'clock things had gone from
bad to worse. We were both exhausted and arguing. Finally at four this
morning I convinced her that taking half a pill was not going to hurt the
baby. I don't know if she believed me or was too tired to argue. Within
half an hour she was asleep."

"Tom, son, did you get any sleep?"

"No, but I'll be okay."

Harry could see the fatigue in his face and eyes. "No, you're not. I want
you to go home and get some sleep."

Tom yawned. "That's not necessary."

"I say it is. Don't argue with me."

Tom was too tired to argue. "All right, but I'm coming back this afternoon."

"Good because there is a few things we need to discuss."

Tom nodded and headed out the door.

He opened the door to Cassy's place. He would have rather crashed on his
bed, but he wanted to be there in case she needed him. He walked into her
bedroom and saw her sound asleep on the bed. He barely had enough energy to
remove his shoes. He stretched out on the bed and closed his eyes.

Cassy opened her eyes. She looked at the clock. 11:30. She tired to sit up
but the pain stopped her. She waited a few seconds and then tried it again,
slowly. She started to move off the bed when she realized she wasn't alone.
She looked over and saw Tom sound asleep. He looked so cute. She smiled.

'Harry,' she thought. 'He's probably upset that Tom isn't there. I'd better do some
damage control. She got up, put on her robe and headed down stairs.'

She picked up the phone and called Harry. Five minutes later she put the
phone down. I can't believe he would try to put in a full day with zero
sleep. He's the one who needs to see about a concussion. She quietly
slipped back upstairs to get dressed.

Tom woke up to the smell of food. He opened his eyes to find he was
staring at the ceiling fan. 'Ceiling fan?' he thought.' I don't have a
ceiling fan.' He sat up and looked around. Cassy's bedroom.
His eyes settled on the clock. 12:30. He sniffed the air and
his stomach grumbled. 'Food.' He got up and followed the scent down
stairs.

Cassy looked up from the newspaper and smiled. "Afternoon."

He grumbled something incoherent and headed for the coffee maker. He poured
a cup and took a long drink. He carried the cup over to the table and sat
down.

"I had forgotten how cheerful you can be in the mornings when you haven't
had your sleep."

He fixed his plate and took a bite. "Well, if memory serves me correctly,
you weren't too bright eyed and bushy tailed after those long nights of
little or no sleep."

Cassy smiled at the memory. "I remember. Boy, we had a lot of stamina back
then."

Tom choked on his toast. "Back then? I'll have you know that I am the same
man I was back then and I'll prove it to you."

A huge smile crossed her face. "Oh yeah? How?"

He stood up. "I'll take the garbage out."

Cassy dissolved into a fit of giggles. Tom joined in and pretty soon they
were near tears.

"Oh..oh..oh" She held her stomach and tried to stop the aching. "This hurts."

Tom immediately ran to her side. "I am so sorry. I can't believe I did that. Are you
okay?"

She smiled at his concern. "I'm fine. I haven't done that in a really long time."

"Me either. Felt good." He leaned over and kissed her nose. "Speaking of
feeling good, how long did the doctor say you had to wait?"

"I didn't ask him."

Tom pulled back. "You didn't ask him?"

"It didn't seem like an appropriate question. 'Hey doc, thanks for saving
my life and all but how long before I can have sex?'"

"Come on, Cass. He's a doctor. I don't think he'd be shocked by the
question. He knows you're pregnant and I'm pretty sure he also knows that
it wasn't an immaculate conception." He smiled a wicked smile. "More like
amazing."

She stood up and carried her plate to the sink. "I'm surprised you even
remember the actual event. We were both pretty wasted that night."

He came up behind her and placed his hand on her stomach. "It was an
unforgettable night."
