Part 16
"We have had two meetings with Dr. Reed and we still have nothing to
connect him with Greer's murder." Cassy moved the phone to her other ear
and continued with folding her laundry.
Tom changed the channels on the television. "Why is it the only
commercials on TV are for feminine hygiene products and hair color?
I have no use for either."
"Tom, are you listening to me?"
"Sure, you said you were missing some socks."
"That was five minutes ago. Turn off the TV."
Tom hit a button on the remote.
"Fine. You were saying?"
"I said turn the TV off, not just the sound."
"Oh all right." Tom turned the television off. "You were saying?"
"I was saying our leads and suspect list is down to zero."
"How can you say that? Reed is our guy." Tom carried the phone into the
kitchen and opened a bag of chips and then returned to the couch.
"I agree, but without evidence, we got nothing. How long do you think
we have before Dr. Reed pegs us as cops?" Cassy asked as she looked at the
tiny 'I'm a Tom and Cassy Production' tee-shirt. She placed the shirt on
her tiny bulge of a stomach and smiled.
"Why would he peg us? I thought we very convincing as Patrick and Georgia
Birch."
"Yes, but Reed is making a killing with his scam. He's not going to stop
with a brief investigation into us. Especially after Greer's death."
"How secure is Harry's background on us?" Tom turned the television back on
and frowned as a tampon commercial aired.
"Very good, but not perfect. Money can open all sorts of doors. And with
what Reed has going, money is not going to be a factor."
Tom stretched out on his sofa with his bag of chips and remote control. "I
agree. What we need is another angle. Any thoughts?"
Cassy moved her panties to the side and opened up the package of new ones
she had just bought. She made a face as she unfolded her maternity panties.
Her pretty, lacey, silky ones no longer fit. She wanted to cry.
"Cass, you still there?"
Cassy scooped up her old ones and placed them in a bag. "Yeah, I'm
here."
"What's going on over there?"
"I'm doing laundry. What were you saying?"
"I was asking you what other angles we could use."
"Right. Let's see. What we need is an inside source." Cassy placed the bag
in her dresser. "Any suggestions?"
"Rebecca, from Dr. Reed's office."
"Rebecca?" Cassy stared at her new panties and reminded herself of the
bigger picture. She placed them in the dresser.
"Sure. Why not? I'd bet she'd talk. Did you see the look way she looked at
me?"
"Yes, but I also noticed the way she looked at Dr. Reed. She's in love with him." Cassy sat down on the couch and began to flip through Roxanne Sawyer's report.
"How can you tell?"
"It's in the eyes."
"But she smiled at me."
"She smiled at me too. Sorry, Pal. How about a patient?"
"Doubtful. Check the PI's report again. There has to be something
there."
"I am." Cassy skimmed down the report. Something clicked. She tossed
the report and the phone on the couch and ran to her briefcase. She pulled
another file and ran back to the phone. "I found it."
"Found what? It's quite rude to leave someone while they are having
a conversation with you. For all you know I could have been
saying something pertinent to this case and you would have missed it."
"Zip it, Thomas. I found the other angle to our case."
"I'm all ears."
"I remembered something Zach Richards said about his wife's job at the
clinic."
"Go on."
"He said that she was recommended for the job with Reed by her employer, a
doctor at the hospital where she worked."
"Who was the doctor? Can we get anything out of him?"
"I'm looking." Cassy skimmed down the page. "Nope, not a word about the
doctor's name. Let me look in her background." Cassy picked up another
page. "Here it is. It says she worked for ... oh my god."
"Cassy, what is it? What's wrong?" Tom went on auto alert. "Is it the
baby?"
"What? The baby? No. I'm fine. It's fine. Everyone is fine. It says
here the doctor she worked for was Dr. Shelia Sanchez."
Tom could feel his heart rate returning to normal. "And who is Dr.
Sanchez?"
"My Ob-Gyn."
Tom thought about this for a moment. "So we have Greer Garnett working
for Dr. Sanchez, your Ob-Gyn. Dr. Sanchez recommended Greer to Dr.
Reed and soon she's dead. Connection?"
"My first instinct says no. Dr. Sanchez has been my doctor for years. I
trust her."
"But Cass, that doesn't mean she isn't involved in this somehow."
"Yeah I know."
"I just realized something, if Dr. Sanchez is involved, then she knows the
truth about you and ..."
"And then Dr. Reed knows that we're not the Birchs but cops and our cover
is blown. I can't believe this."
"We have to know for certain. How can we do this without revealing too
much?"
"I wish I knew."
