PART 7
Harry was waiting for them with bated breath and ushered them into his office. "Well?"
"You know Harry, if you just came with us you wouldn't have to wait for a progress report."
"Tom, my boy, without me here to man the ship, chaos would erupt."
"Sure thing Harry." Tom smiled at Cassy who smiled back.
"So what did you get on the ex-fiance?"
Cassy spoke up. "My instincts tells me he's clean."
"Go on."
"He seemed really detached and remote when we arrived and began to ask
questions about Greer, he didn't want us to know how much she hurt him when she left. However, when we broke the news of her death, he broke down. He still loved her. After all those years, he still loved her. I don't think he could have hurt her."
Harry mulled it over. "I see. Tom, what about you?"
"I agree with Cass. I don't think he had anything to do with her death either."
"I see. So, according to the two of you, neither the husband nor the ex-fiancé, had anything to do with Greer Garnett's death. Great. That leaves us with exactly no leads. Just great."
"Come on, Harry, don't count us out yet. We need to talk with her parents and that PI Winston Brooks hired.
"You will. The two of you are scheduled to leave for LA this evening."
Tom and Cassy looked at each other and then at Harry. "You heard me. You're going to LA and you're going to talk with the Garnetts. It took some doing but I managed to get you an audience with the very elusive and very busy Garnetts."
"Why Harry, that sounded a tad sarcastic to me." Tom said.
"Good, then I hit the mark. Mrs. Garnett was rude and snobbish and.."
Cassy laughed. "And we know how much you New Yorkers hate rude and snobbish people."
Harry shot Cassy a look and she stopped laughing. "That's enough. You have a meeting in an hour with Alexandra Prescott in her office."
Cassy turned pale. Tom noticed it and diverted Harry's attention before he noticed. "Why are we meeting with Ms. Prescott? She's with Internal Affairs.
This is not an internal affairs case."
"Yes, Tom, my boy, but it is a very high profile case with a very high profile family at the core. Besides, I think she and Mrs. Garnett are old friends. Anyway, you're meeting with Alexandra and Christopher Shea."
"Our new Governor? How lovely. Anything else?"
Harry handed Tom an envelope. "Here are your plane tickets and everything else you need to know. Your meeting with the Garnets is at 11AM. Don't be
late."
Tom peaked inside the envelope. "Harry, this ticket says we leave here in three hours."
"Then I suggest you make your meeting with Prescott and Shea as short as possible. Now go."
"That was horrible. One of the worst times of my life. I couldn't even look her in the eyes. I bet she knows about me and Dalton."
Tom pulled out the parking space and turned onto the street. "Cassy, she doesn't know. Anyway, isn't the wife always the last to know?"
"I think she could tell. Did you see the way she was looking at me?"
"Yes, because you looked like you were about to jump out of your skin. So what if she knows, you didn't know he was married and you ended it when you found out. So what's the problem?"
"My job and reputation would be ruined if she found out. And technically, I didn't end it."
"What? What do you mean, you didn't end it?" His first thought jumped to the baby.
"What I mean is I haven't seen or spoken to him since that night. He hasn't called me and I haven't called him. So technically, we didn't break up."
"So what is this, just a really long fight?"
"No, it's over. We just never came out and said it."
"I think you finding out he was married to your superior said it well enough."
"I suppose so. But eventually, we will probably come face to face again and I will let him have it."
"You wouldn't be Cassy if you didn't." Tom pulled in front of her place. "I'll be back in one hour. That's one hour, Cass, not one hour and fifteen minutes. You be ready."
"I'll be ready."
