The Best Of 1980 - 1990 B-Sides
Three Sunrises (3:52)
Originally released in the "Wide Awake In America" and "The Unforgettable Fire" mini-LPs
    - An excellent way to start off the B-Sides, and to have on the Best Of collection.  I think this song is a great addition, and it saves me from having to buy the four tracked Wide Awake In America.

Spirit of the rising sun lift me up
Hold me there and never let me fall
Love me 'til I die, my heart won't wait
Soon I will be loved...

In this love song, love
Love song, love song

Hey, hey, love won't find
Find its own way home

In this love song, love
Love, love song

Sun shine, sun shine on me
Sun shine, sun shine on me

In this love song, love
Love song, love song

Hey, hey, love won't find
Find its own way home

In this love song, love song
Love song, love song
Sun shine on me
Bring it through to my heart
I would give you everything
I will give you my desire

Sun shine, sunshine on me
Sun shine, sunshine on me

Spanish Eyes (3:14)
Originally released in the "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" single
    - One of my favourites from U2 of all time, I originally saw the music video on the band's website, and I wondered what album it was off of.  I wasn't too happy to find that it was on a hard-to-find single, but to my luck, the song was on this collection. The song is actually just about Bono's daughter, whom I have said before is described as having spanish eyes.  Bono pledges his love and devotion to her in this song.  The music video starts on a train coming slowly into town, and basically the video is about the band wondering around town, not unlike the "Desire" video.  Great song.

Wey hey hey, baby hang on
Wey hey hey, baby hang on
Empty heart, beat tight as a drum set
Empty love, she'd shine like a song
Wey hey hey, baby hang on (to anything)

Our love shines like rain
In those spanish eyes
Spanish eyes

Wey hey hey, here she comes
She comes in colors
You know she gonna turn the daylight on
'cause I love the way you talk to me
And I love the way you walk on me
And I need you more
Oh, than you need me

Our love shines like rain
In those spanish eyes
Spanish eyes

I'll cross the world for green and gold
But it's those Spanish eyes
That get me home...home again

Wey hey hey, baby hang on
Wey hey hey, you know that
The night is young
Dazzled by lights that shine in your eyes
I'm standing in the shadows
And wait for the night
Forever in fever, forever in heat
You pick me up to put me out on the street

Wey hey hey, baby hang on, hang on
Wey hey hey, baby hang on, hang on
'cause I love the way you talk to me
And I love the way you're mean to me
And I need you

Sweetest Thing (3:03)
Originally released in "Where The Streets Have No Name" single
    - This is the original version of the song I mentioned in The A-Sides for this collection.  As stated before, it was the decision of the band not to release this on the album, much to their later regret.  The major difference between this song and the single mix is Bono's singing, which is more reflective of The Joshua Tree era that the song's from.  Also at about two minutes through, the music break is more defined.  Be sure to note that the beginning of the song sounds like an old western piano than the regular piano of the single mix.  Both are equal songs, in my opinion.

My love she throws me like a rubber ball
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
She won't catch me or break my fall
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Baby's got blue skies up ahead
But in this I'm a rain cloud
You know she likes a dry kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing

I'm losing you
Hey hey hey, I'm losing you yeah
Ain't love the sweetest thing

I wanted to run but she made me crawl
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Eternal fire, she turned me to straw
Oh oh, the sweetest thing
You know I got black eyes
But they burn so brightly for her
Mine is a blind kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing

I'm losing you
Oh oh oh, I'm losing you yeah
Ain't love the sweetest thing
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Oh oh, yeah

Blue-eyed boy meets a brown-e yed girl
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
You can sew it up but you still see the tear
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Baby's got blue skies up ahead
And in this I'm a rain cloud
You know we got a stormy kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Oh oh, the sweetest thing
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing

Love Comes Tumbling (4:40)
Originally released in the "Wide Awake In America" and "The Unforgettable Fire" mini-LPs
    - I really love this song.  I'm glad they put it on this compilation with it's partner "Three Sunrises".  Plus, the songs aren't stuck together, like what I ranted about in The A-Sides.  Great song.

Love don't need to find a way
You find your own way
I forget that I can't stay
And so I say that
All roads lead to where you are
All roads lead to where you are

The seed is spilled, the bed defiled
For you, a virgin bride
Hide yourself in someone else
Don't find yourself in me

I can't lift you up again
Love comes tumbling down again

Love don't need to find a way
You find your own way
I forget that you can stay
And so I say that
All roads lead to where you are
All roads lead to where you are

Bass Trap (3:31)
Originally released in "The Unforgettable Fire" mini-LP
    - It's too bad the instrumental stuff U2 went through only seemed to be a phase with The Unforgettable Fire, cause I really like their musical pieces.  This one is kind of boring, but it's very nicely done.  Not too rockish, but mellow like the album era it's from.  The title either refers to netting a big lake fish (doubtful) or about the bass guitar being a lead instrument, which it sort of is.  It's certainly pronounced.  Not bad.

Instrumental

Dancing Barefoot (4:45)
Originally released in the "When Love Comes To Town" single
    - Another fantastic song!  This song has such a singable tune, it's hard to not like it.  The song seems to be about U2's usual stuff (ie. a guy falls in love).  Unfortunately, the guy who falls for the girl is NOT the singer.  This is a saddening thing for the singer, and he feels quite jealous, which I assume is the song's theme.  I love the ending (Oh God, I feel for you), and I think it's an excellent way to wrap things up.  Musically, it has a very strong guitar lead and is more like the rock of The Joshua Tree than the blues of Rattle And Hum.  No complaint, just an observation.

She is benediction
She is addicted to he
She is the root connection and
She is connecting with me

Here I go and I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly
Could it be he's taking over me

I'm dancing barefoot
Headed for a spin
Some strange music drags me in
It makes me come up like some heroine

She is sublimation
She is the essence of thee
She is concentrating on
He who is chosen by she

Here I go when I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly
Could it be he's taking over me

I'm dancing barefoot
Headed for a spin
Some strange strange music drags me in
It makes me come up like some heroine

She is recreation
She intoxicated by thee
She has the slow sensation that
He is levitating with she

Here I go when I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly
'Til I lose my sense of gravity

I'm dancing barefoot
Heading for a spin
Some strange music drives me on
Makes me come up like some heroine

Oh God I feel for you
Oh God I feel for you
Oh God I feel for you
Oh God I feel for you

Everlasting Love (3:20)
Originally released in the "All I Want Is You" single
    - Another love song.  This time about a guy proposing to his fiance, pledging his everlasting love.  It's got a great chorus, but I find the pure guitar gusto at the beginning a little annoying.  As soon as the rest of the band joins in though, the song improves by miles and it's actually pretty good.

Hearts gone astray
Keeping up when they go
I went away
Just when you needed me so
You won't regret
I'll come back begging you
Don't you forget
Welcome love we once knew
Yeah

Open up your eyes
Then you'll realize
Here I said was my
Everlasting love

Need you by my side
Come and be my bride
You'll never be denied
Everlasting love

From the very start
Open up your heart
Feel the love you've got
Everlasting love

This love will last forever
This love will last forever

Hearts gone astray
Keeping up when they go
I went away
Just when you needed me so
You won't regret
I'll come back begging you
Don't you forget
Welcome love we once knew
Yeah...

When love's river flows
No one really knows
'Til someone's there to show the
Way to lasting love

Like the sun it shines
Endlessly it shines
You always will be mine
Eternal love

Whatever love went wrong
Ours would still be strong
We'd have our own
Everlasting love

This love will last forever
This love will last forever

Open up your eyes
Then you'll realize
Here I said was my
Everlasting love

Need you by my side
Come and be my pride
Never be denied
Everlasting love

From the very start
Open up your heart
Feel the love you've got

Everlasting love
Everlasting love
Everlasting love
Everlasting love
Everlasting love

Unchained Melody (4:52)
Originally released in the "All I Want Is You" single
Cover from The Righteous Brothers' Just Once In My Life
    - Yet another easy song to decipher, this song is about a guy who misses his loved one when he's away from her.  Nothing too cryptic.  The song is really good, and a very U2 style song, even though it's a cover of the song by The Righteous Brothers from 1965.   You can hear The Edge's signature guitar strumming away in the background, which is nicely done.  It's a slow piece for sure, but is very full of emotion, which I enjoy.  The ending is pretty good, with a chorus of ladies (who are part of the Rattle And Hum ensemble, I'm sure) sing the last line over and over, but it's really moving.

Oh, oh my love
Oh my darling
I've hungered for your touch
A long and lonely time

And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine

I need your love
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me

Lonely rivers flow
To the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea

Lonely rivers sigh
Wait for me, wait for me
I'll be coming home
Wait for me

Oh, oh my love
Oh my darling
I've hungered for your touch
A long and lonely time

And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine

I need your love
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me (it to me)
God speed your love to me
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)
(I need your love)

Walk To The Water (4:49)
Originally released in the "With Or Without You" single
    - A bit of a departure from Bono's normal singing, he speaks the verses as if telling a story.  It's actually pretty neat, and the sound effects in the song are pretty cool (especially in the beginning).  The song's theme is actually rather hard to understand, but I think it's about people who are ignored their whole lives, and finally decide to end it all in a river.  More specifically, an attention starved woman, and a guy who paints billboards who'll say anything to get attention.  It's pretty depressing, I have to admit.

(She said it wasn't cold
She left her coat at home that day
She wore canvas shoes
White canvas shoes
Around her neck
She wore a silver necklace
It was given to me by my father, she said
It was given to me)

(She took the back way home
Passed the lights and the Summerhill
Turned left onto the North Strand
And on, and towards the sea)

(He said he was an artist
But he really painted billboards
In large capital letters
Large capital letters
He was telling jokes
Nobody else would listen to him)

(I saw you that day
Your lips were cherry red
Your legs were crossed
Your arms wide open)

(Your hair was coloured gold
Like a field of corn
You were blown by the wind
You were blown by the wind)

Walk, walk, walk...to the water
Walk with me a while
Walk, walk, walk...to the roadside
Walk me in the light

A room in the Royal Hotel
Sea facing views
A man with a suitcase
Full of things he doesn't need
I'm looking through your window
I'm walking through your doorway
I'm on the outside
Let me in
Let me love you
Let me love you
Let me...

Walk, walk, walk...to the water
Walk with me...yeah
Walk, walk, walk...to the roadside
Walk with me again

Luminous Times (Hold On To Love) (4:35)
Originally released in the "With Or Without You" single
    - This song seems to be about a man singing to the woman he loves, but more specifically, his soul mate.  It's a very special thing to not just find someone you love, but to find someone who truly understands you and relates with you on a very intimate level.  And that's what this song is about.  Lyrically, it's an emotionally moving piece, but musically it's a tad repetitive.  It builds up to a good climax though.  Overall pretty okay

Hey...sister love
Hey...sister soul
Hey...oh my love
You turn me around tonight
Hey...sister love
Save my soul, save my soul

Hold on to love, hold on to love
Love won't let you go
Love won't let you go
Hold on to love
See the sunshine in her soul

Hey...sister love
Hey...seems so bright
She comes like carnival
She is the big wheel
She turned my head around
Turned my head around
She is the speedway
She is the slipstream
She is coming 'round

Hold on to love
Hold on to love
Love won't let you go
Hold on to love
Hold on to love
She the sunlight in her song
See the sunlight in her soul

She is the gun fire
She is the car crash
She is a avalanche
She is the thunder
She is the waves and
She pulls me under

I love you 'cause I need to
Not because I need you
I love you 'cause I understand
That God has given me your hand
He holds me in a tiny fist
And still I need your kiss

Hold...on to love
Hold...

See the sunlight in her song
See the sunlight in her soul

Hallelujah Here She Comes (4:00)
Originally released in the "Desire" single
    - This song is a little too folk-songish for my liking.  The song is about some woman who's from the wrong side of town, who the singer is very attracted too.  At least, I hope that's what this song is about.  If not, then the woman's sexual frustration has finally been solved.

I see you're dressed to kill
I know I can't wait until
Hallelujah...here she comes

I see you're dressed in black
I guess I'm not coming back
Hallelujah...here she comes

Born and raised
On the wrong side of town
You get so high
That you can't come down
(Yeah)

I see the road is rough
You know I'm not giving up
Hallelujah...here she comes

I know where the lady goes
I know she got a ring on her toes
Hallelujah...here she comes

Born and raised
On the wrong side of town
You get so high
That you can't come down

I'm going higher, higher, higher
Higher, higher, higher
Higher, higher, higher
Higher, higher, higher
I'm gonna be there
When that light's gonna shine
I'm gonna be there
When her heart kindles next to mine
I'm gonna be...
Here she comes
Yeah here she comes

I see you're dressed to kill
I know I can't wait until
Hallelujah...here she comes

I see you're dressed in black
I guess I'm not coming back
Hallelujah...here she comes

Born and raised
In the wrong side of town
You get so high
You can't come down

I'm gonna be there
Higher, higher, higher
Gonna get higher, higher, higher
Gonna get higher, higher, higher
Higher, higher, higher...

I'm gonna be there
When that light's gonna shine
I'm gonna be there
When that light's gonna shine...

Hallelujah...here she comes
Here she comes...

Silver And Gold (4:37)
Originally released in the "Where The Streets Have No Name" single
    - The live version of this song is from Rattle And Hum, and it's essentially the same, except there is no spoken part in this version.  There is a false ending, which is pretty nifty, and then it builds back to reinforce the meolody.  On the whole, it's a pretty cool.

In the shit house a shotgun
Praying hands hold me down
Only the hunter was hunted
In this tin can town
Tin can town

No stars in the black night
Looks like the sky fell down
No sun in the daylight
Looks like it's chained to the ground
Chained to the ground
The warden said
The exit is sold
If you want a way out
Silver and gold

Broken back to the ceiling
Broken nose to the floor
I scream at the silence, it's crawling
It crawls under the door
There's a rope around my neck
And there's a trigger in your gun
Jesus say something
I am someone, I am someone
I am someone

Captain and kings
In the ship's hold
They came to collect
Silver and gold
Silver and gold

Seen the coming and going
Seen them captains and the kings
See them navy blue uniforms
See them bright and shiny things
Bright shiny things

The temperature is rising
The fever white hot
Mister, I ain't got nothing
But it's more than you got

Chains no longer bind me
Not the shackles at my feet
Outside are the prisoners
Inside the free
Set them free
Set them free

A prize fighter in a corner is told
Hit where it hurts
Silver and gold
Silver and gold

Endless Deep (2:57)
Originally released in the "Two Hearts Beat As One" single
    - A quasi-instrumental song, which is the best instrumental by them.  Even by listening to it, you can hear echoes of "New Years Day" and other songs off of War.  Now it's not entirely instrumental; Bono contributes somewhat and sings two lines. But I would count it as instrumental.  I put his lines in anyway though.  The best part is the combination, team playing between The Edge's piano and Adam's strong guitar.  A really good song!

Where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?

A Room At Heartbreak Hotel (4:32)
Originally released in the "Angel Of Harlem" single
    - I'm guessing the Heartbreak Hotel isn't really a hotel, it's just the state people are in when they break up from a relationship. And judging from the lyrics, I think I'm right.  Overall, I'm not impressed with the song.  I think it's pretty anthematic, which isn't bad, but something about the repetitive nature of the song bugs me.  And then there's a break in the song where a gospel choir starts babbling, but I can't understand what they're saying.  Ah well.

From where I stand
I can see through you
From where you're sitting, pretty one
I know it got to you

I see the stars in your eyes
You want the truth, but you need the lies
Like Judy Garland, like Valentino
You give your life for rock n' roll
Uh huh

Stand, we're on a landslide of love
You got everything you want
But what you need you give away

For primitive love
And a ride on the mystery train
A primitive love
A room at the Heart...
The Heartbreak Hotel
A room at the Heartbreak
Heartbreak Hotel
A room at the Heartbreak
Heartbreak Hotel

You say it's love, it's not the money
You let them suck your life out like honey
Turning tricks, you're on the street
Selling your kisses so bittersweet

(Gospel voices)

A primitive love
And a ride on the mystery train
A primitive love
A room at the Heart
The Heartbreak Hotel

A room at the Heartbreak, the Heartbreak,
The Heartbreak Hotel, Hotel
A room at the Heartbreak, the Heartbreak,
The Heartbreak Hotel, Hotel
A room at the Heartbreak, the Heartbreak,
The Heartbreak Hotel, Hotel
A room at the Heartbreak, the Heartbreak,
The Heartbreak Hotel, Hotel
A room at the Heartbreak, the Heartbreak,
The Heartbreak Hotel, Hotel
A room at the Heartbreak, the Heartbreak,
The Heartbreak Hotel, Hotel

Trash, Trampoline, And The Party Girl (2:33)
Originally released in the "A Celebration" single
    - This is such a great song.  If you don't recognize the name of the single, I don't blame you.  But suffice to say, it came out right after the "Gloria" single which is from October.  This song is the original version of "Party Girl" which you'll find on Under A Blood Red Sky.  This song is a little better, in my opinion, because of the weird sound effects of the emotion in Bono's voice.  He sounds like he's at this orgy of a party, and watching what's going on.  It's also a great way to end the album.

I know a girl, a girl called Party
Party girl
I know she wants more than a party
Party girl
And she won't tell me her name

I know a boy, a boy called Trash
Trash Can
I know he does all that he can
Wham Bam
And he won't tell me his name

I have a heart, a heart that's beating inside
When I was three I thought the world revolved around me
I was wrong
And so I sing along
And if you dance, then dance with me

I know a girl, a girl called Party
Party girl
I know she wants more than a party
Party girl
I know a boy, a boy called Trampoline
You know what I mean

I think you know what he wants
I think he knows what he wants
I think he knows what he wants
