The Ships

Take a gander at the main characters (The ships!)

Red Dwarf:
Red Dwarf is a mining ship.  That's it.  It has no weapons or shields, because, technically, it was never supposed to leave the solar system.  If it was in trouble, there was normally a star ship just around the corner.  But that was then, this is now.  Red Dwarf is a ship 3'000'000 years from it's original mining area.  You can guess that's trouble.  But where it lacks in weapons, it makes up in size.  When a meteor hit it, (we're talking about a meteor that has been hurling through space for who knows how long, gaining velocity the whole time) it only conked out a single room!

There are tons of corridors with different names of colors, numbers, and letters as well. Red Dwarf itself has a new look if you see the remastered versions; elongated with different engines, and a more apparent bridge.

Starbug:
Starbug was never supposed to have weapons or shields.  It's basic function was to deliver crew members to and from Red Dwarf and that's it.  Lister and the gang now use it as a transport vehicle, because it's mother ship is even slower than it (which is pretty hard to do).  During the paradox with their future selves, Starbug expanded by 200%!  The ship has now about two miles worth of service ducts and even a little docking bay.  As of Season 8, the Starbug we know and love was destroyed in the Red Dwarf cargo bay. That didn't stop Rimmer from raiding the cabin for the Sexual Magnetism Virus, and the Luck Virus. But worry ye not. For Red Dwarf has many it's share of Starbugs.

Blue Midget:
Blue Midget was Lister and the gang's first transport vehicle.  Actually, it's supposed to transport ore and other minerals from a planet to it's mother ship.  They have used only a few times since they found Starbug, like in the chase in 'Bodyswap'. Blue Midget has been given something new since the eighth season, something that makes them a bit more believable as mining ships: retractable legs. This undoubtably gives the ships more maneuverability across uncharted terrain when looking for ore samples. It generally seats three people, but may hold more.
