Although the movie continues where the TV series left off at the end of season five, people unfamiliar with The X-Files should be able to pick up what's going on (all the characters do their best to let you in on who they are just in case you don't know the character). To tell the truth, people unfamiliar with The X-Files may like this movie more the the devotees of the TV show. The X-Files have two basic styles of show, the conspiracy plot and the monster story. They try for both in the movie, with the conspiracy plot coming off adequately, but the monster story lacks any substance. The movie really doesn't offer anything that hasn't been seen before on The X-Files, but may be really interesting for the first-timers out there. For people keeping up with the show, the movie continues the plots of the series, focusing on the US government's attempts to keep an alien conspiracy under wraps from an unsuspecting public. All the major characters from the series turn up, but most are just set pieces. Mulder, Scully, and The Cigarette-Smoking Man are the only ones with a good amount of screen time. The plot was well thought out, but is presented in a way that alternates between somewhat entertaining to somewhat boring. The characters don't interact very much, which doesn't allow the conspiracy plot to develop very well. Overall, they should have spent a little more time on the characters, and less advancing the story. The characters are what drive the stories for The X-Files in the first place, and conspiracy stories without much character development are rather boring to begin with.

A group of people with abnormal abilities do to mutant cells in their body team up too fight off a second group which want to kill all non-mutant humans. The movie is a typical summer event movie with big special effects and a passable script full of big fights and smart-aleck jokes. Because of the directing and acting, however, it manages to rise a little above the standard event movie, being fun enough to be mildly entertaining even though we've seen it all before.
