A Case of Mistaken Identity

What's In a Name?

Lara Mia Veronica Misa Garcia. Yup, I was born with that very long name. I never liked being called just Lara (but I got used to it) and my friends always loved the combination of my three names.   In college, since there were lots of Laras then, I used Nicca. During the height of the Internet craze here in Manila, I fancied using Virtual Veronica. That was that.

I found it cool using VIRTUAL VERONICA, but on July 1998, I hated it so much. Why? It's because there was one person who called our house and asked if there was a certain Veronica Garcia who lives there. My brother Karl, who was in a horrible mood then, said, "Yes!" then put down the phone. A while later, a handsome man of Indian descent, arrived looking for the said Veronica. I went out of the house thinking he was a friend of mine I was expecting from the Middle East or something, but I had a bodyguard with me. He showed me photocpies of certain bounced checks. My conscience was clear. I never even had a bank account at FIRST BANK. I told Manu Mukhey, yeah, that was his name, that it was not me.  He believed me. I told myself, this is a very nice man. I hope he finds that Veronica Garcia from Roque Drive (or Circle) Tandang Sora, Q.C.

Days later I received a letter of demand from ATA & HABAWEL Law Offices. Geesh! I was really angry at Manu then thinking he was not a man of his word. I called his office, but his partner (from a lending firm) told me that he is actually a nice person and that the letter of demand was sent before he confirmed it was not me. Later, I was able to speak to Manu. He is actually nice. I hope he has found that person who has no right to be my namesake. She has no right to treat an angelic man that way.

Why am I writing about this five years later? It's because I found that letter of demand that I placed on our altar...well, actually, my mom found it. She asked me why I kept it. I told her it's because Manu and Ajita Mukhey's address is there...so I can keep in touch. God bless them.

One thing's for sure, if ever I do get married, he and his wife will be included in our guest list.

:-)
