Okay, I was reading another review of Titanic, and its chief problem
with the movie was that it made all the first class passengers into
"bad guys", and all the third class into "good guys". Well I just have
to say something about that. I don't think the movie tried to make the first
class people into "bad guys", necessarily. They were portrayed as being
a little preoccupied with materialistic stuff, but that was pretty much their
only bad side. I mean, obviously, they could still be *nice* and human--they
had the top scene after all. And there's always Molly Brown. And Mr. Andrews (if
he counts as first class... I'm not sure). The two who were made into semi-villains were
Cal and Ruth, who were just obsessed with money and status. As for the third class, yeah--they
were pretty much presented as the "good guys", I guess. But consider that they
weren't in that many scenes. They were in the party below decks, and that was
pretty much it, right? Anyway, I don't think this movie tried to make the first class
passengers look bad so much as it tried to make materialism look bad. Our society
is a little obsessed with having *things*. And on top of that, for some people, like
Brock Lovett, the only reason to study about the Titanic would be to get more
things.
