I went to the Twisted Babes for Cal site, which was really neat! I personally think it's very cool that some people out there aren't completely obsessed with Jack so much that they don't see Cal's good qualities. (Yup, I think he has some. As someone who signed the guestbook pointed it, it's not like we got to see Cal during some of the best days of his life. I mean, his fiance was cavorting around below decks with this third class guy...y'know?) Anyway, then I read the guestbook, and I noticed pretty much everyone had this attitude that if you loved Cal, you had to hate Jack and say he was a sissy, and if you loved Jack, you had to hate Cal and call him an "unimaginable bastard" or something. Well I just hafta say that I love them both.

Jack is *not* a sissy. I absolutely HATE that attitude, and I'll get defensive about it if I have to. Just because he's an artist, you people have to act like he's a sissy. That's a jock attitude if I ever heard one, and the *one* thing you can say to get me so mad I'll turn red and shake. :-) He *loved* Rose. He wanted what was best for her. He completely adored her. But he also had his own strength and charm which made Rose love him. And I really think that Jack and Rose belonged together.

Cal is *not* the scum of the earth. He loved Rose, too. But he loved her in a different way than Jack did. He didn't show his love for her like he did. I think Billy Zane said about him, "His heart is breaking even as he finds out he has one." Deep inside, Cal is like a small child, and he feels betrayed, so he lashes out at the people around him. I think one of the most tragic things about him is that no one ever really loved him. His life was empty. So all of you who love the Phantom of the Opera so much, and pity the Phantom for having lived such a cold, empty, lonely life, tell me what the difference is between Cal and the Phantom (other than the fact that Cal is "handicapped" by good looks). Both of them tried to kill people when the woman they loved left them, didn't they? So what *is* the difference? They were both motivated by the same basic emotion.
