Rose collage

Rose looks at the proper little girl Rose is a very complex character. "Outwardly, I was everything a well brought-up girl should be, but on the inside, I was screaming," says Old Rose. I think that may be one of the main reasons I don't hate Rose for "getting" Jack. In Newsies, I HATE Sarah. That's because they never develop her character, and she comes across as a complete ditz with no personality, but plenty of good looks. This is not the fault of the actress, who, I'm sure, did everything she could to make Sarah more palatable, but anyways, I'll get off of that subject. :-)
My point was, one of the main reasons I don't hate Rose is that she has a depth of character. I don't know how many people have felt like she did that night at dinner when, as Old Rose said, "I saw my whole life as if I had already lived it... the same narrow people..." but I know I certainly have. I've grown disillusioned with the world around me from time to time, and especially this year, my first year at college, when I finally realized that no matter where you go, you end up with the same personality types. Anyway, it is very easy for me to identify with Rose. This is due both to the script and to Kate Winslet, who is absolutely divine in this role. I've only ever seen her in one other movie--that Kid in King Arthur's Court one. I think that's the name of it. The amazing thing is that I actually remembered her part, which was pretty minor, when I read that she was in it. :-)

'This is exquisite work.' Most of the time, female actresses either make me want to strangle them, or they make me tolerate them and think, "Oh, they're pretty good." But I totally, completely LOVE watching Kate. Her facial expressions and everything are fantastic. For example, I love her facial expression when she's on deck with Jack after he said, "Well well well! Now who's being rude?" And her facial expressions while she's looking through Jack's drawings are really great too. And the one she makes before she is about to use the ax to cut Jack's handcuffs, and Jack says, "I trust you," is perfect as well. I also admire her for being able to run all over creation in heels. I can barely *walk* in them. :-) She's a lot like Leonardo in that you can tell what she (her character anyway) is thinking just by looking in her eyes.
