Chapter 1: Sphinx-cleaning

It was clean-up day at the sphinx and almost every mummy was busy cleaning up the place. Rath was dusting off the furniture, Armon was cleaning up in the kitchen and Nefertina was washing the Hot-Ra. Ja-Kal was at the park with Presley showing him some new Egypt-Su moves.

"Hey Rath. When do you think Ja-Kal will be back to help us here in the sphinx?" asked Armon.

Rath sighed and looked over his shoulder at Armon. "If he wasn't so busy helping Presley with Egypt-Su, we would be done right about now with this what does the Prince call what we're doing?"

Nefertina spoke up from under the Hot-Ra. "Presley calls it spring-cleaning."

Armon gave Nefertina a strange look. "Spring-cleaning? I thought it was the middle of summer?"

Rath rolled his eyes and Nefertina laughed. Armon just shrugged his shoulder

and got back to taking care of the leftover food in the kitchen. That was his favorite way of cleaning up around the sphinx.

"Hey guys!" greeted Presley who came into the living room on rollerblades.

Armon and Nefertina waved. Rath didn't see Presley come in and continued to dust the coffee table. Presley walked over to the couch and sat down. He pulled off his rollerblades and put his feet on the table where Rath was dusting.

"Excuse me, my Prince, but I am in the middle of trying to keep this place clean. Will you kindly remove your feet from the table."

"What's up with Rath?" Presley asked Nefertina as he took his feet off of the table.

She sighed. "I wish I knew."

Armon looked over at Rath. "Maybe his wrappings are on too tight," he whispered to Nefertina and Presley."

Rath gave Armon a sharp look. "I heard that."

A little while later Ja-Kal walked in. "Hello all."

"Hey Ja-Kal. What kept ya?" asked Presley chuckling.

Ja-Kal walked over to Presley and put his hand on Presley's shoulder. "You are just too fast for me o' Prince," Ja-Kal answered.

Presley walked over to Rath. "Is something bothering you, Rath? You seem to be on edge."

Rath looked down at the floor. "I'm not on the edge of anything o' Prince." Presley laughed. "No, that's not what I meant," he said. "I mean, that you don't seem to be yourself today."

Armon looked over at Rath and Presley. "I don't think anything is wrong with Rath," said Armon. "He's always his self when he's this way."

Rath grabbed a pillow from the couch and threw it at Armon, hitting him in the side." Armon picked up the pillow and was going to throw it back at Rath when the smell of Beefy Burgers stopped Armon in his tracks.

"I'll get you later, Rath," said Armon, "but first I need to fill my stomach with some Beefy Burgers." Armon tossed the pillow onto the couch and went into the kitchen.

"So, Rath," said Presley, "what's on your mind?"

Rath put his hand under his chin. "I don't know why," he said, "but I was thinking about one of my students that I knew back in Egypt. Hmm, I wonder why?"

Chapter 2: New Kid on the Block

My mom and I had just moved to San Francisco from Egypt. My father was in the Diplomatic Corp and was transferred to Egypt for 8 years. I loved living there and didn't mind the hot, dry weather.

"Wow, Mom. This place is so cool!" I said as we approached the apartment where we would be living. "I wish Dad was here to see this."

I spent my first 9 years living up in the mountains of Oregon. I had never seen such big buildings and so many cars all in one place before. Mom gathered all the luggage she could carry and hauled it up to the apartment.

"Cherie, honey. Come give me a hand."

I ran over to Mom and grabbed the apartment keys. Once inside, I wandered around our apartment admiring our new home. My dad was still in Egypt and would be coming to San Francisco later on this year. I was getting a little bored so I decided to take a tour of the neighborhood.

"I'm gonna go for a walk, Mom. I'll be back before dinner."

Mom nodded. "Remember to be careful and don't stray too far from home." I sighed. "Don't worry, Mom. I'll be fine." I waved my hand over my shoulder and closed the front door behind me.

Everything in California was so different from Egypt. There were so many statues, parks, fountains, and buildings. As I got closer to a small park, I began to hear lots of commotion by an over-turned moving truck. It had the words "Museum Movers" on the back.

"I wonder what all the fuss is about?" I thought. I hid behind some bushes and watched workers fumbling over what looked like an Egyptian sarcophagus.

"Wow!" I awed.

"Watch what you're doin'!" I heard one of the workers shout. "This mummy is worth a fortune."

"Yeah, yeah. We hear ya, Tony," spoke a worker with a San Francisco 49ers baseball cap.

The workers carried the sarcophagus and placed it onto a bench.

"We can't put this thing into the truck until it's back on its wheels. Let's take a break and get something to eat," spoke the man named Tony.

"But what about the mummy being unguarded, Tony?" asked the man with the baseball cap.

"She'll be fine, Charlie, so stop worrying."

Charlie adjusted his baseball cap and followed the other workers. I looked around to make sure the coast was clear. When it was, I wandered over to the mummy's sarcophagus. I ran my hands all along the beautiful carvings and read over the inscription that was carved into the case. I was able to decipher the hieroglyphics with ease because I had learned and studied about them in Egypt.

"Inside this sarcophagus lies Princess Esina. Her spirit, like the eagle, is as graceful as the wind. Her courage and loyalty is like the spirit of the lion."

I thought to myself and wondered what it would have been like to have lived in ancient Egypt 3,500 years ago. I was about to lift open the case and look inside when I heard faint voices of the workers returning from their lunch. I looked at the sarcophagus one last time and then headed for home.

Chapter 3: The New Exhibit

"Presley, honey. Wake up," spoke up Presley's mom, Amanda.

Presley shifted from one side of the bed to the other and covered his head with his pillow. "Come on, Mom," pleaded Presley. "Just a few more minutes. I'm so tired."

Amanda sighed. "Well, that's no excuse for watching TV so late." She grabbed Presley's clothes from atop his dresser and threw them on the bed.

"Now, Presley. I mean it."

Presley groaned and reluctantly got out of bed. He put on his clothes and headed downstairs.

He found his mom drinking coffee and reading the morning newspaper. A bowl of cereal was waiting for him with a cup of orange juice off to the side. Presley sat down and began to eat his breakfast.

"Anything interesting in today's newspaper, Mom?"

Amanda looked up from the newspaper and shook her head. "Nothing out of the ordinary," she replied. "Did I tell you that Mr. Hepplewhite is working on a new Egyptian exhibit?"

Presley took a drink of his orange juice and shook his head. "No, Mom. What's this new exhibit going to be about?"

Amanda set down the newspaper. "All I know, is that the main interest will be the sarcophagus that holds a 3,500 year old Egyptian mummy princess named Esina.

"Wow," awed Presley. "When can I go see the exhibit, Mom? Can I see it today? Pretty, pretty please?"

Amanda laughed. "Calm down, Presley. It's not open to the public yet. Probably won't be open 'til later on this year."

Pres looked at his mom and sighed. "Oh. Well, don't kids of museum workers get special privileges?"

Amanda walked over to her son and ruffled his hair. "Sorry kiddo. No can do. Just be patient and time will fly by and before you know it, the exhibit will be open and then you can come and see it."

Presley drank down the last of his juice and put the dirty dishes into the dishwasher.

"So, Mom. Where's this exhibit going to be?"

"It's going to be constructed near the Rapses exhibit," she answered. "It will be located in the sphinx, but closer to the entrance. Not like the Rapses exhibit which is to the rear of the sphinx."

"Cool," said Presley.

Amanda gathered her purse and car keys. "Well, I better get going. Mr. Hepplewhite wanted to talk to me about some of the arrangements for the Princess Esina exhibit. I'll be back around 8:30 tonight. Be careful and no fast food for dinner, okay?"

Presley smiled at his mom and grabbed her hand and guided her towards the front door. "I'll be fine, Mom. Don't worry."

Amanda chuckled. "Sometimes I wonder what you do all day while I'm gone. Anyway, be good and I'll see you soon." She kissed the top of Presley's head and walked out to her car. She waved goodbye and drove off.

"I wonder if Ja-Kal, Rath, Armon, and Nefertina know anything about this Princess Esina exhibit? Well, there is only one way to find out," thought Presley. Presley grabbed his backpack and reminded himself that after school he would go straight to the Rapses exhibit AKA home of the mummies, and talk to them about the new Egyptian princess exhibit.

Chapter 4: The Mysterious Man

I didn't sleep as well as I had hoped, probably because I was thinking so much of my adventures yesterday. Something about the inscriptions on the sarcophagus seemed familiar to me but I couldn't quite place what. I glanced over at the alarm clock on my end table beside my bed.

"Hmm, 9:45," I said aloud. "Well, I better get dressed, have breakfast, and then do some site seeing. There is still much more to see in this large city."

I got dressed, went downstairs and had some toast, eggs, and some apple juice.

"Now that I have had a healthy breakfast, nothing is stopping me from exploring."

I put the dishes into the dishwasher and wrote a note to Mom, just incase she got home early. When all was taken care of, I went for my walk.

Everything seemed so vast that I decided to take a bus from one part to the next. I had a San Francisco guidebook and there was one place in particular that I wanted to see. It was a sphinx that was surrounded by a canal. The sphinx was home to the young Egyptian Prince Rapses exhibit, but it had been closed for six months.

Even though the exhibit was closed, the guidebook did say that the beauty outside of the sphinx was grand enough to see. The book also said that there were plenty of Egyptian statues and fountains around the sphinx that were worth seeing too. I looked to my right and saw a bus stop. It must have been my lucky day because a bus had just stopped to drop off people and pick them up.

"Perfect timing," I said to myself.

I crossed the street and boarded the bus. I glanced at the places where the bus was going and found out that the Egyptian sphinx was the third one on the list. I looked for a place to sit and found the only empty spot near the back. I glanced at the man sitting next to me.

"Very mysterious," I thought.

He wore a large brown trench coat and brown top hat. The amulet that he wore around his neck intrigued me. It was gold colored and had a green stone in the middle of the snake-shaped amulet. In fact, he was so intriguing that I had almost missed my stop. Once off the bus I wandered around, looking at all the very neat Egyptian statues and fountains that were kind of here and there, but what I thought to be most magnificent was the sphinx.

"Wow!" I awed.

I wondered what kind of Egyptian wonders were inside of the museum. I looked inside the guidebook to see when the sphinx may again open to the public. It said, besides having been closed for six months, that the exhibit would be closed until further notice.

"This stinks," I thought.

I tucked the guidebook into my jacket pocket and walked around some more. Suddenly my eyes caught a man entering the sphinx. It was the same mysterious man from the bus.

"Wait a sec," I thought. "If the sphinx is closed until further notice, then why is he going inside? Hmm, maybe this guidebook is old."

I started to walk towards the front entrance of the sphinx. It didn't have a door, so I wandered deeper inside. Then something caught my eye at the far right side of the wall. It was the same sarcophagus that held the Egyptian mummy princess, Esina. I walked over to the case and studied it more carefully. I never got a chance to see what was inside, so I thought what the heck. I opened the sarcophagus slowly and peered inside.

Chapter 5: Looking Back

What I saw was truly amazing. The mummy was covered in a very dusty gray material and had this beautiful amulet around her neck. It didn't look quite like the one the mysterious man had, but was still nevertheless as breathtaking. It was gold colored and had a white stone incased into the bird/lion-shaped amulet.

My hand reached up to touch it, but when my hand touched the amulet, a strange white and gold glow shot out of it, which blinded me for a few moments. When my eyes recovered from the bright light, I realized that I wasn't in the sphinx anymore, but was in a large clearing surrounded by people in Egyptian clothing holding up large snake staffs. Everyone around me kneeled down and a man standing in front of me began to speak. I noticed in his left hand was an amulet that looked just like the one that was around the mummy princess' neck.

"On behalf of my kingdom and myself, King Amenhotep, I hereby give you, Princess Esina, this token of my appreciation for saving my son, Prince Rapses', cat from near death," spoke the man.

I stood in disbelief. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "Did he just call me Princess Esina?" I asked myself.

The king placed the amulet around my neck and smiled. "My son is here and wants to thank you in person." He pointed to a young boy holding a black cat.

"Come here my son. This is Princess Esina, she is the one who saved your precious cat's life."

Young Prince Rapses set the cat on the ground and kneeled in front of me. "I can't thank you enough for saving my cat, Kahti's, life."

I smiled at the young prince. I still couldn't quite grasp what was happening and I was about to speak aloud when another even brighter flash of light blinded me. When my eyes again recovered I realized I was back in the sphinx.

"Woah, what a strange dream," I said. Everything seemed too weird to be true.

I looked at the sarcophagus and noticed that the amulet was no longer around her neck. I closed the case and tried to figure out what had just happened.

"This is getting kind of freaky," I said.

I was about to leave the exhibit when I heard a clanging noise off in the distance. I got up and raced to the front entrance of the sphinx.

"Oh no!" I said. The exit had been blocked. "Now what else could go wrong."

I decided to try and find another way out when something smacked me in the back. I turned around and saw a man, but not an ordinary man. He was wearing a construction workers uniform but his face held no expression. He looked like he was made of stone. I got up and ran to a door that was on the other side of the wall. I opened it and saw about five more of these stone men.

"Oh man, this is just not my day." They all marched towards me holding long staffs with large silver/red jewel-like projections at the end.

I didn't know what to do until some spirit-like voice, sounding exactly like mine, said, "Call upon Ra and use the power of your amulet."

"What amulet?" I said aloud.

I felt around my neck and noticed that something was around it. I took it off and looked at it. It was the amulet that I saw around Princess Esina's neck earlier and the one King Amenhotep gave me in that weird dream. I again placed it around my neck and thought for a second.

"You don't have much time," spoke up the spirit voice.

The stone men were getting closer and then five words popped into my head. I put my right hand around the amulet and said those words.

"With the strength of Ra!"

Chapter 6: Rath's Past

After school, Presley went to the sphinx to meet with the mummies and talk about the new Princess Esina exhibit.

"Hey, guys!" exclaimed Presley as he walked into the living room.

Armon and Nefertina glanced up from the *spirit box* and waved their hand.

"How's it going, Presley?" Nefertina asked.

Presley plopped down on the couch in-between Armon and Nef.

"Everything's okay I guess," he said. "Did you guys know that there is a new exhibit that is going to be displayed here? It's another Egyptian one. The main interest is going to be the mummified remains of a mummy Egyptian princess named Esina."

Armon and Nef looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders.

"Sorry o' Prince. We do not know about...", Armon stopped in mid-sentence because there was a huge clamor going on in the kitchen. Armon and Nefertina both got up from the couch and ran over to where Rath was lying on the floor. Nefertina helped Rath to his feet.

"What happened?" Armon asked. Rath stood shakily.

"I'm all right," Rath said. "I was a little startled when you spoke the name, Princess Esina."

Presley took out something from his backpack and handed it to Rath. It was a newspaper article that described the Princess Esina exhibit. Rath looked at the paper and sighed. He walked over to the couch and sat down, rubbing his head with his hand.

"I knew Esina 3,500 years ago. I was teaching her and my other students when King Amenhotep had not yet asked me to teach you, o' Prince."

Presley got comfortable on the couch and listened to Rath. "Please go on. I want you to tell me all you can about Esina."

"Well," said Rath, "Esina was one of my best students. She had the finest touch with magic; much like Chontra, but was never jealous of anyone. She was very shy when it came to speaking aloud, but it was a quality I found a liking to. Esina spent a lot of her time writing stories about mythical creatures and drawing pictures of them. When it came for all my students to show all that I had taught them, Esina was the best. Chontra was very jealous of her and I could sense it every time Esina did her magic for me. But that's another story entirely."

Presley pointed at the carving on the side of the sarcophagus in the photograph.

"Is this one of the mythical creatures she wrote about?" he asked.

Rath looked at the photo and nodded. "Yes. It's called a Griffin. It has the head, wings, and front legs of an eagle and the hindquarters of a lion. It was a great beast. It had a loyal heart and was very brave."

"Whatever happened to Esina?" Presley asked.

Rath shrugged his shoulders. "I wish I knew my Prince. After I left to teach you, I seldom saw my students again. Esina did come by to read her stories to me and show me the pictures she had drawn. The last day I saw her was when I went off to fight Scarab to try and save you. I don't know what happened after I was killed."

Rath covered his hands with his face. "I wish I could have told her how much I really cared for her."

Nefertina put her arm on Rath's shoulder. "It's the past and there's nothing we can do about that. Just know how much it meant to Esina for you to have taken an interest in her and her work."

Rath smiled. "She was a great writer and artist. I am glad that I was there for her."

Presley grabbed the newspaper article and placed it into his backpack.

"Well, I gotta go, you guys. Mom's making meatloaf for supper. I'll catch ya later."

"Goodbye, o' Prince," said Rath. Armon looked after Presley.

"Speaking of meatloaf. What are we having for dinner? I'm starving!" said Armon. Nefertina and Rath laughed.

Chapter 7: Shabti Wars

There was a bright flash of white and gold light after I had said the words, "with the strength of Ra." I heard a screech of an eagle and the roar of a lion while bright lights flashed around me.

After the sounds of the eagle and lion faded away and the bright lights disappeared, everything went silent for a few moments. I opened my eyes and looked around. I suddenly felt heavier than I did before. I looked at my hands and saw these strange golden gloves on them. They had claws at the end of each finger. The claws looking much like the eagle's talons. I looked down at the ground and noticed that strange boots had now taken the place of my hiking shoes. The boots were made of gold and had 4 claws at the end, which were, like the lion's claws. On my head I felt some kind of helmet. I moved my hands all around it and felt a sharp-rounded curve point at the end near my face. Kind of like a birds beak.

I remember what had I read on the sarcophagus about how Esina's spirit was as graceful as the eagle and as brave and loyal as the lion. I looked at my hands and feet again. I put my hand under my chin and thought for a minute.

"Claws of the lion on the boots, talons of the eagle on the gloves, and the bird helmet I am wearing." Then something occurred to me. There was a mythical creature that I had read about that had the head, wings, and front legs of an eagle, and the hindquarters of a lion. I shook myself from my daydreaming and looked around. I saw about 15 stone men surrounding me with their evil snake staffs aimed at me. I never studied karate or any other self-defense course, so I had no idea what to do.

"Use the power of your golden staff." spoke up the same spirit voice I had heard before. Out of nowhere, this beautiful golden staff appeared in front of me. I reached out around and grabbed it. It had numerous Egyptian hieroglyphics carved onto it and it had the most exquisite white crystal on the end. I didn't feel scared when I held this wonder in my hands. The stone men walked closer to me, with their snake staffs held high. I stood bravely and aimed my golden staff at one of the stone men. A beam of gold-colored light shot out if it and hit him. The man crumbled to the floor in a pile of dust and rocks.

"Wow!" I said. "This thing really is powerful."

Still, the stone men continued on. I held the staff in a horizontal position. I spun it around and around as fast as I could. Beams of light shot out of the middle of the spinning point and hit all the stone men, sending them crashing to the floor. I stopped spinning the staff and set it down. I looked all around me.

"No more stone men," I thought. The ones that were here, were now just piles of dust and rocks.

"I'm glad it's over," I said. Suddenly a felt lighter again and noticed that my armor was gone.

"You did well, Cherie," spoke the spirit voice. "I am very proud of you." Then all went silent.

I sighed and walked towards the front entrance. I noticed that the barrier had been removed, so I ventured on home. During the night I still thought of my battle against the evil stone men. I couldn't figure out why it happened, but I knew that for some reason it did. Sooner or later, I'd find out why.
