BARBARA WALTERS(VO)
Three years ago, Barbra moved to her dream home overlooking the Pacific near Los Angeles.
In the den are her many awards, including the Grammys, the Golden Globes, the Emmys
and her two Oscars. The home has a comfortable family room furnished with antiques.
The guest cottage next door is decorated with quilts. And of course, flowers are everywhere.
An avid collector, Barbra has furnished her home with many antique dolls.
(on camera) Why so many dolls? What do they mean to you?
BARBRA STREISAND
I guess it's because I never had any as a kid. When I was young, Ihad a hot water bottle.
I thought it was kind of great. You filled this hot water bottle with warm water,
and it just felt like a realkind of baby. And I was raised by a knitting lady when my
mother went to work, Toby Baracal (ph). And she knitted my hot water bottle a little
sweater and a little hat, and that was my doll.
BARBARA WALTERS
So now this house is filled with the things you never had.
BARBRA STREISAND
Yeah, that's right. My life is filled with a lot of things I never had.
BARBARA WALTERS
Barbra, this is exquisite!
BARBRA STREISAND
Isn't it pretty?
BARBARA WALTERS
You planted all these roses?
BARBRA STREISAND
Mm - hmm. Yeah, this was just a dirt -- weedy field, you know?
BARBARA WALTERS(VO)
Her garden is filled with flowers, including nearly a thousand rose bushes.
(on camera) What is this where it says "possible rose named Barbra?" This is you?
BARBRA STREISAND
Yeah. We're looking to try to cultivate a rose that has a great smell and is strong
and vibrant and good color.
BARBARA WALTERS
So this might be Barbra?
BARBRA STREISAND
This might be Barbra.
BARBARA WALTERS(VO)
This was a happy and relaxed Barbra Streisand -- a big change since our last interview

You know, why do you keep asking me this question? You asked me this in ...
BARBARA WALTERS
Because you know, it's the kind of thing that I know people want to know.
BARBRA STREISAND... in 1985.
BARBARA WALTERS
I ask you every time I see you. So the answer is, "Yes, maybe?"
BARBRA STREISAND
No, there's not a maybe.
BARBARA WALTERS
You've waited a long time.
BARBRA STREISAND
It hasn't been right yet.
BARBARA WALTERS
Is it the right time now?
BARBRA STREISAND
Yes, it's the right time. Yeah, isn't that nice, to be sure, to know? I think for
the first time in my life I'm not afraid to love. You see, what Jim does with me, too,
in my life is he fills a void that has, that I never thought could be filled. Not having
a father, it was this kind of deep hole that could never be filled. And he --not only is
he my lover and my friend and my best friend but, he is -- he fills the role of my dad
at times, you know?
BARBARA WALTERS
To have someone take care of you?
BARBRA STREISAND
Yeah. Sometimes I'm in the pool, and I'm hanging all over him and hanging on his back,
and he's holding me on his hip, and I'm thinking, "This is it. I'm peering at the world
over this strong man's shoulder, and I feel safe."
BARBARA WALTERS
One hears very often that it's very difficult for two actors, especially if one is more
successful. Is this any kind of a problem?
BARBRA STREISAND
Not at all.
BARBARA WALTERS
Does this worry you at all?
BARBRA STREISAND
Not at all. Because when I'm at -- in a studio, he's able to read his lines and work
on his directing and figure out shots while I'm singing. I don't know how he does it.
But he'll stay with me. In other words, he's a support system, you know? I used to read
books that said, "To my loving husband, who supported me through this project." And I
now know what it feels like to say, you know, "Thank you to my loving husband."
BARBARA WALTERS
You just said, you know, "my husband."
BARBRA STREISAND
Mm - hmm.
BARBARA WALTERS
But you're not married yet?
BARBRA STREISAND
No.
BARBARA WALTERS
No? Are you sure?
BARBRA STREISAND
Yeah.
