Creating Star Wars Hyperspace Jump Point Effects

My computer generated hyperspace jump point effect with 1490 stars.

A hyperspace jump being made in Return of the Jedi

The hyperspace effect is an effect that always impresses me when I see it in Star Wars. The effect is even more impressive when viewed through a high resolution single frame enlargement. A freeze frame of this effect on a TV just doesn't do it justice. I decided in February 2000 that I would like to eventually incorporate one of these jump point effects with the 6 foot long Star Destroyer model I'm currently making. Well, after 90 hours of hard work spread out over four months, I've finally attained the results I was looking for. I hope you enjoy the still pictures and animation!

I also sent off a letter to ILM's CG supervisor Dan Goldman to see if he would like me to provide ILM with any animated hyperspace effects they might need for use in Star Wars episodes II and III. I received a very nice letter back from Dan saying that although he very much liked the effect, ILM would probably use some star streak software that was written for Galaxy Quest to do these types of effects for episodes II and III. He did offer to help me get a job at ILM though!

This sequence required approximately seven hours for my hyperspace program to produce at a resolution of 2644x1125 pixels. Warning: This GIF animation file is 950 KB in size so it could take a couple of minutes to download, but I assure you it's worth the wait or double your money back!

NOTE: Almost all of the diagrams contained in the web pages below still need to be added.
