pictures of the Klingon Battle Cruiser built for ST:TMP
The Star Trek exhibit was sponsored by Paramount Pictures and took place in a gallery in the upper East wing of the Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C. during the last part of 1991 and through to the end of 1992. The exhibit consisted of a variety of historical materials which included a wall of pictures which traced the history of the series, many of the models used in both the series and the subsequent movies, as well as many costumes worn by the actors. In addition, the exhibit showcased many of the hand and stage props used in the series as well as displays of many of the commercially available toys and other merchandise that has been made available to the public throughout the years. The exhibit also featured Captain Kirk's captains chair that you sit in and have your picture taken , as well as a mockup of the transporter room from the ship. The exhibit also featured an auditorium where people could watch a film about the series which included interviews by many of its cast and producers.
I was primarily interested in the exhibit for its models and hand props and most of my description of this exhibit is about that. The exhibit showcased a number of models from both the series and subsequent movies. The exhibit's major models included the four foot long Galileo shuttle, Khan's four foot long sleeper ship, the original twelve foot long Enterprise model, the nine foot long Enterprise model from Star Trek I, as well as Star Trek I's the five foot long Klingon Battle cruiser. Also displayed was a three foot long recreation of a Klingon Battle cruiser from the TV series as well as two Tholian attack craft.
Unfortunately, many of these models were displayed in relative darkness far overhead in the gallery's front foyer and they therefore didn't lend themselves well to photography. As a result, I don't have any really good still pictures of most of these models that I could put up on this web page, although I do have some good video. I suppose that the producers of this exhibit felt that many of these models were to big to put down on the main floor, but I feel that as a result of their decision, the public was deprived of the opportunity to study these models up close. The Klingon battle cruisers, shown below, were mounted in display cases on the ground level, so I was able to take a number of very detailed pictures of these ships.
I have to apologize for the lack of depth of field in most of these pictures, but I didn't have a tripod when I recorded these images. Also, back in 1991, I had no idea that they would ever appear on the internet anyway.
As seen below, I was also able to get a nice picture of a Tholian attack ship from the original Star Trek series.
I was fairly happy with the displays of the various hand and stage props used throughout the series. One display case held many of Dr. McCoy's medical instruments that he used in the sick bay as well as tools used in Scotty's engine room. The display case also housed a nice assortment of type I and II hand phasers.
