I photographed the Star Destroyer model more than any other model in the exhibit. I ended up taking a total of 75 pictures of this very light cream colored 8.5 foot model, which is supposed to represent a ship that's a mile long. I was very impressed by model's incredible level of detail. I estimate that the surface details on the model went down to 1/16th of an inch, and the model holds up extremely well no matter how close you photograph it. I also couldn't get over the sheer depth of the detail. Some of the surface details extended into the model to a depth of several inches. It's obvious that many hundreds of hours alone went into just detailing the model.
On this web page, I have included a representative sample of the 46 best pictures that I took of the model. I've also grouped the photos into a series of categories to help the reader understand where the photos where being taken on the model. Since I was primarily interested in obtaining very detailed close-up shots of the model, most of the shots on this web page reflect that objective. I have also tried to round out the exposition with a few wider angle establishing shots of the model as well.
Many of the photos on this web page, particularly those of the landing and launch bay areas, show surface details that to my knowledge, have either never been pictured before or just never pictured clearly. I was particularly happy to get an extreme close-up shot of the giant mandible used to grasp ships being held in the landing bay. Also pictured clearly for the first time on several of these photos are the complex etched surface plating patterns.
