Payback is an exciting change of role for
Mel, who is very much used to playing the good guy. In a way, his
character, Porter, is a sort of a good guy cos the rest are much
nastier than him but his is supposedly a tough, mean, S.O.B.
Anyway, I honestly found the trailer more chic and cool than the movie.
The movie itself is okay. The story is interesting because of the multitude
of weird characters; the 'good guys' being 'bad' (the corrupt cops), the
'bad' guys trying to turn over a new leaf (Porter and Rosie) and not
forgetting the hillariously wicked Pearl (Lucy Liu's sadistic character!)
This movie has its moments of triumph with many nicely shot scenes. Brian
Hedgeland is certainly a very good director and it'll be interesting
to see his next movie project!
Well, the movie is about Porter who is like a small time crook who with
Val, steals some money from a triad gang. When it's time to split the cut,
Val double-crosses Porter; he takes Porter's wife and tries to take Porter's
life as well. Unfortunately (for Val, that is) it takes a lot more
than a few bullets to do away Porter and soon, Porter resurfaces with
a personal vendetta against Val.
That's the gist of it and the ending is, well, a rather of a let-down.
Porter was supposed to die in the last scenes but a sudden change of script
ended up with... well, go watch it yourself!
