I should be pretty happy right now in my life. I am a college student doing the things I always wanted to, but was unable durring the tyrany of my highschool years. I would say Im finally going in the right direcetion. But I am scared shitless. I have trouble sleeping and I havnt been eating so well. What is bothering me so much as to cause such physical ailment? The possibility that George W. Bush could be our next president. The reason for this is simple and complicated at the same time. One of Georgies top advisers is the director of The Christian Coalition. Now the fact that The Christian Coalition exists is desturbing enough and has brought me much worry. The fact they are a very powerfull lobbying group and influence much of the United States Congresional legislation, and the outcome of many campains in order to have thier creationist, right wing, NRA/Gun loveing, european egocentrism ideals prevail in mainstream America is enough to make me concider packing my bags and hightailing it to Canada. The fact that the Executive Chief could may soon be one of these guys I think should be enough to quickly get everyone in favor of seperation of church and state, who doesnt want thier kids shot at school or while they are at work and who doesnt think that the human species popped out of thin air into campain action against Gov. Bush. I was just thinking about the C.C. and what it would mean if one of these Jesus Freaks got in the Oval office when I read about the connection with George W. It would mean more censorphip and more gun violence- let me explain a bit: Although many point out the hypocracy of it that so many political groups and individuals that claim to want to restore a more religous, spiritual conetion with the counrty are also the same ones who are pro NRA/pro gun, people like Phil Grahmm, Pat Buchanan, Ralph Reed-(You know the old image of a Bible in one hand and a shot gun in the other.) I think I know why they support these seemingly conflicting sides. Guns will help secure their intentions of infiltrateing religion into goverment. The more shootings we have and the more the public crys out for the goverment to do something about it, instead of banning hand guns and makeing it harder for criminals to arm themselfs, the religious right hopes to blame the lack of religion and spiritualality in the country in order to get the public in favor of such things as prayer in shcools and other topics on thier agenda. They want to keep guns in the hands of the lunatics to make examples when theres a shooting: “Look- if this man had found Jesus- he woulndt have killed those 12 people.” - “If he had better Family Values growing up...” And Columbine has given them what they need. Little or no gun legislation has been passed because of this tragidy. But they are succeeding in keeping high school students out of movie theaters because of it. Because of Columbine the Republicans made a big to do about violence in film and telivision which led to the enforcment of stricter admintance policies in movie theaters -just in time to keep 16 year olds from seeing the South Park movie, written over a year before Columbine, attacking the hypocracy of the censorship laws made by the same people who bomb and kill thousands via the military- no wonder they dont want kids to watch it. So the censorship has already begun. And things are only going to get worse. Especially if Bush is elected. This way you can be ashured that absolutly no gun laws will be passed, stricter censorship will be enforced and Jesus is going to find himself a seat in the US congress. Those of you who are not white, male christians might be a little upset about all this- and even if you are a white male christian- who is proud that his country employs little things like freedom of religion and freedom of speech- why dont you get off your ass and keep bush were it belongs- in white cotton panties and not in the white house. What scares me most is that the public may not be educated enough to realize whats going on. These politicians go for peoples emotions and get every religious zelot and gun happy nut case to come out rally for thier support. Meanwhile the average middle class law abideing guy who doesnt attend church, not because hes a demonic satin worshiper, but perhaps because he doesnt agree with the hypacracy of organized religion, whos working hard and doesnt want his kids to get shot in school is going to be shafted simply cause people like him dont have time to get into a political campain and demonstrate for the rights and freedoms that they have always taken for granted since they were a kid. Well now people are going to have to make time to become active in politics unless we want our country turned over the the religious, gun loveing zeolots who have become a major force.
A quote from Robert A. Heinlein: (An award winning writer, scientist who is much
better with words than myself.)
“(T)he idea that we could loose our freedom by succumbing to a wave of religious
hysteria, I am sorry to say that I consider it possible. I hope that it is not probable. But
there is a latent deep strain of religious fanatasism in this, our culture; it is rooted in our
history and it has broken out many times in the past. It is with us now; there has been a
sharp rise in strongly evangelical sects in this country in recent years, some of which hold
beliefs theocratic in the extreme, anti-intellectual, anti-scientific, and anti-libertarian.” (theres more to this I will add later concerning the establishment of a sect weilding great financial powerer and the ability to advertise )
Mr. Heinlein wrote this in 1952 well before the advent of the Christian Coalition and the millenium doomsday cultists. Unfortuatly his vision of a sect aquiring the money to launch a nationwide ad/propaganda campain may indeed becomeing true. It was recently reported in the August 9th, 1999 issue of Time magazine that a secrative group called the DeMoss Foundation aqaired 200 million dollars in 1979 and over the past twenty years has achieved even greater wealth. This has resulted in an advertiseing campain hawking the groups book Power for Liveing which even has minor celbrities such as one former Miss America endorsing it. The article sited that the groups main purpose overal (besides funding anti gay and anti abortion projects) is to promote a “Christian America.” The groups founder (Mr. Arthur S. DeMoss) established that the groups main purpose was to make enough money to support missionaries. What is the purpose of missionaries? To spread and force thier religion on others. With the political power of the Christian Coalition on thier side, it is a very scary prospect that the combined power of these groups may be leading toward the religious legislation that Heilein foresaw 50 years ago. With the current violent out bursts and the conservative Christian progun, congress, it will be only a matter of time before certain “Moral” laws are passed infringeing on freedom of speech, freedom of religion. I think the only way to fight back is to go to people with money who would be on our side. Namely the entertainment industry. They should be in support of this, since they are the ones under attact from these groups who divert the gun issue and place blame of violence on film and tv. So why don’t the large Enterainment companies with thier billions get involved? We could get far more powerfull celebrities and people in favor of free speech and religion. They controll the airwaves- it would be simple- give little or no time to evangicle groups, and put in place there own ads for free speech encourageing the public to take pride in the constitution. Celebrities are elected to Congress all the time. If planned out by the right people it would take only a few years to turn things around. We need to start our own lobby on the Secular Free Speech Platform.
