Accessories

Every era has its own fashion trends. That is what helps to define each decade. For instance, the 50's
gave us hoop skirts and Mary Janes. The 70's gave us bell bottoms and psychedelic colors. And so on and so on.
The Edwardian period, in Titanic's time, gave us a lot of interesting styles and accessories.
You wouldn't know it by looking at historical photos because everything was shot in black and white, but
colors were vibrant in that era, jewlery was ornate, and accessories such as hats, gloves
and shawls were big trend setting accessories.

Shawls

Shawls were actually a very popular accessory of the Titanic era. They were quite elaborate and detailed in design. Some of the most popular shawls came in embroidered silk, paisly prints, floral prints and lace, like the one Rose has on in the flying scene.

Gloves

Gloves were another popular item of that era. We see the elegant elbow length gloves particularly in the dining scenes where getting dressed was an important affair. Rose also has on a wonderful pair of shorter white gloves with matching purple cuffs that complete her fabulous purple and white pin striped ensemble in the boarding scene.

Hair Ornaments

Hair accessories and ornaments were also very popular as they still are today. Gem studded headbands and diadems were seen quite often. Rose can be seen wearing one in the dinner party scene. Jewled barrettes and hair combs like the butterfly comb Rose had were also quite popular.

Evening Look

Add a touch of glamour and authenticity to your Titanic inspired evening gown by wearing a pair of elbow length gloves in white, black, or red depending on your gown color. And don't forget the small beaded drawstring purse like the one seen here, which are actually still very much in fashion today.

Walking Sticks

Walking sticks, canes and umbrellas were seen often amongst both men and women in 1912. No matter what you called them you could usually find the wealthy elite walking around with them.

Watch Chains

Men of the 1912 era had certain jewels of their own in fact. Men wore watch chains and pocket watches as well as cuff links and tie pins. Cal can be seen in the art scene with Rose wearing a watch chain as seen here in this picture.

Hats, Hats, and more Hats!

Hats were a very big accessory item for both men and women in 1912. For the women they were somewhat grand in scale. They were very colorful with feather plumes and other accessories such as silk roses and fabrics. For the men they were of course somewhat smaller and came in a variety of different colors. If you are attending a Titanic themed party, then perhaps a Titanic inspired hat is just what you are looking for to complete the authentic Titanic look. In which case you should check out La Bonneterie for hats of this era.

Jewels

In 1912 jewels were of course as popular then as they are today. The designs were a bit different though. In the Edwardian era designs were ornate and delicate.
With the exception of the Heart Of The Ocean, but that of course was fiction. However, the real "Heart Of The Ocean" from the movie (right) sold at Christie's Auction House in New York City for $3.3 million to Rene Angelil, Celine Dion's husband.

There are several stores online where you can order your own replica of
"The Heart Of The Ocean". Here are some links to a few:

The J. Peterman Company sells the only official replica authorized by FOX. It comes in a
beautiful box with a certificate of authenticity.

Byrd Designs Byrd Designs has a beautiful Titanic Collection including a Heart of the Ocean replica,
butterfly comb, and the jewelery Rose wore during the "jumping off the back of the ship"
scene when she first meets Jack, among other pieces.

Costumes: The 1912 Steam Ship Collection

Clothing the film's character's in 1912 finery was no small task, especially since much of the story
takes place amid the oppulence of first class. "It was an explosin of excess," observes Costume Designer
Deborah Scott. "What it says about the period that produced these detailed works of art - and the lives of
the people who spent hundreds of hours sewing them - is incredible. And when you realize there were
sometimes five or six complete changes of clothes each day it becomes even more staggering."
