We showcase some of the top Movies in Hindi cinema of all time! From the oldie classics to the contemporary! I have so far my all time favourites DDLJ and Sholay on display. I will be including others.

On Friday, 13th May 2005, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, or DDLJ as it is fondly called, had enjoyed a run of 500 consecutive weeks of continuous play in theatres, more especially at the Maratha Mandir in Mumbai, India. The love story of Raj and Simran continues to strike a chord with audiences, as they keep coming back to Maratha Mandir theatre to fall in love over and over again with one of the most evergreen stories told on the silver screen.

The movie, which cemented the super star status of the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol pairing, opened to packed houses and rave reviews way back on 20th October 1995. Indians all over the world instantly fell in love with this simple yet eloquent story.

Director Aditya Chopra’s directed his first film, DDLJ, at the young age of 23. Released in 1995, DDLJ became one of the largest grossers in Indian film history. While remaining popular with the masses, DDLJ also garnered critical acclaim from all quarters. The film swept that year’s Filmfare Awards, picking up every single award of consequence, and propelled Aditya Chopra as one of the most influential young voices in Indian Cinema. It even featured Karan Johar (now an acclaimed Director and Producer) as friend to Raj (played by Shah Rukh Khan).

In 2001, DDLJ broke the continuous-exhibition record, established by the legendary box office super hit movie Sholay at Minerva Theatre (it had played continuously for 5 years between its release in 1975 to 1980). DDLJ is now the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema, as it passes one milestone after another, and is presently running in its 10th year.

In celebration of its 500 week run, DDLJ had been re-released by Yash Raj Films across India during May 2005.

Synopsis

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a story about human relationships.

Chaudhry Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri) is a London based immigrant (No relation to Thakur Baldev Singh from Sholay). He, along with his wife Lajwanti (Farida Jalal) and two daughters Simran (Kajol) and Chutki (Pooja Ruparel) have been living in London for the past 20 years. A true Indian at heart, Chaudhry Baldev Singh is a man of great morals and has tried to imbibe the very same in his daughters. He has brought them up with the belief that they are strangers in this foreign land and are there purely for financial reasons. They will all return one day back to Punjab, back to his roots, his land, his culture, one that he so strongly believes in.

Simran like any other girl dreams of this perfect man and waits for him to walk into her life. Soon enough, she realises the mere futility of her dreams as her marriage has already been arranged to her father's best friend's son Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi).

Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan has played a character of this name in Mohabattein as well), another London based immigrant is a regular rich spoilt brat brought up in the lap of luxury. He is a true playboy at heart. But he shares a beautiful relationship with his father Dharamvir Malhotra (Anupam Kher) where they are more like best friends. They surprised us with their celebration of Raj's first person ever to fail at a prestigious college in the UK. Usually the celebration is for being the Top student!

Raj and Simran along with other friends meet on the Euro Rail. They go through an entire range of emotions. From initial hatred, to being acquaintances, to friendship and finally falling in love. They realise their true feelings for each other only when they part at the end of the trip.

Raj is aware of Simran's pre-planned marriage and feels there is no hope. Simran confides in her mother about her feelings for Raj. She tells her that she can't see life without him. Chaudhry overhears the conversation and gets furious. He makes an impulsive decision to leave for Punjab overnight. Meanwhile Raj is motivated by none other than his father, who tells him that if he truly loves Simran, he has to go and get her.

The second half of the film takes us to Punjab, to Chaudhry's entire family. A family that consists of his mother (Achla Sachdev), his brother (Lalit Tiwari), his unmarried sister (Himani Shivpuri) and his best friend Ajit Singh (Satish Shah).

In search of Simran, Raj lands up in Punjab. Does Raj manage to win over the entire family? Does he manage to win over Chaudhry Baldev Singh? And does he finally manage to take his 'dulhan' (bride) away? Kyon? (Why?) Le Jayenge, Le Jayenge... Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge!
